In educational institutions, essays are a way to analyze a student’s progress and thinking process, hence the importance of originality in writing essays. An essay shouldn’t represent an individual’s credibility alone but also that of the source used. The writer of an essay should be truthful and not fabricating facts to support a claim, should use the appropriate format regarding the field his essay is directed to and lastly properly citing the sources used in his essay in the correct formats. Also, using a credible source relevant to the topic of the essay is crucial, as citing a chemist discussing automobile parts is less credible than an engineering student. Books and library databases are very credible sources for information as the editors and librarians have respectively verified and evaluated the importance of information published. On the other hand citing information from the web is very risky, as almost anyone regardless of their qualifications can alter information on the web. As a result the credibility of sources from the web are to be carefully evaluated. Check the author or publisher’s stance on the topic discussed, whether inclined to a part or not. Also the information from the source should be current enough to be useful. Failure to be credible or cite a credible source would result in a misinforming essay, and sometimes termed
Good written assignments can be shown to determine my academic integrity by writing it in my own words or using others’ student’s work as my own.
Academic honesty is defined as the use of one's own work, this includes thoughts, materials and workings, in the endeavours of writing papers, taking exams (online or campus based), and other assessable material (Harder, 2014). Academic integrity is the ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as prevention of plagiarism; upholding a high academic standard; honesty and rigour in research (Kirk, 1996). Plagiarism is one of many dishonesties that occurs and is the most common. In 2010, Johanson published an article that stated there may be a correlation with the recent abundance of technology and the rise of student dishonesty. "Access to high-technology has made cheating more convenient, flexible, and efficient…”(Johanson, 2010)
When discussing integrity and ethics regarding law enforcement it is difficult to just narrow down to one element representative thereof. The first item of importance referring to integrity is, to be honest, and transparent in everything that you do so that the public can see you, as a community representative, are trying to foster good working community relations and that you as a leader will not stand for any misconduct. Recently here in Nashville, Tennessee (Alund & Sawyer, 2017) we were faced with an officer involved shooting of a suspect who evaded, possessed a loaded weapon, and fought up until the point the officer felt an immense fear for his safety and the safety of the community so unfortunately he was left with no alternative. Unfortunately, the victim passed in surgery. The suspect was later found to be driving on a revoked driver’s license, serving an 8-year probation for drug
Additionally, without providing sources the reader cannot know if Zinsmeister has done appropriate research and has the authority to make these statements. Academic integrity is a commitment, even in the face of adversity, that is based on five fundamental values including honesty, trust, fairness, respect and a responsibility for your actions.
Now that we are living in an ever changing world, technology is viewed as the most resourceful tool in keeping up with the pace. Without the use of technology, communication would be limited to using mail for delivery and encyclopedias for research. Although technology has improved the way we communicate and find information for research, the information is not always valid. Unfortunately, for those of us who use the internet for shopping, research, or reading articles of personal interest the information is not treated the same as a your magazine or book. While such literature is reviewed by an editorial staff, internet literature or information can be published by anyone. In order to reap the full benefit of having the use of technology for any purpose, there are five basic criteria’s one must keep in mind as an evaluating tool for deciding whether or not the particular website is a reliable source for information.
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
The term “ethics” refers to an external set of rules that have been established by an institution or organization, for example, a university, and the members are expected to follow them. On the other hand, integrity refers to an individuals’ internal set of principles that guides their actions and behavior (Czimbal and Brooks n.p.). As a rule, people are usually rewarded when they follow ethical codes of conduct by an external committee or board that monitors their behavior. For a person of high integrity, the benefits are usually intrinsic. Moreover, such individuals always make the right decisions even when they are not being watched. Therefore, this feature of character is often influenced by a person’s upbringing. In
Honesty and integrity are very important in the medical field. We as healthcare workers are given such trust and responsibility. We should always strive to do our best and when faced with tough situations. When we don't always know what to do or the proper way to react we should always be honest. Let our superiors know what is going on and ask for advice when we need to. This would show that we are honest. When we come into contact with patients they rely on us to do the right thing and always perform our job with integrity. Often people’s lives are in our hands. We have to care about the patient and care about our job in order to continue to provide quality care. If someone hates their job they are not going to give their best in every way they can. The medical field is not a place for that person.
As students of high school and college, and even in the professional world, we are asked to research and write on subjects that are seen to be important. The research that we are asked to do, has been done many times in the past, which means people are bound to use others’ ideas and words with no recognition, sometimes without even knowing it. This leads to plagiarism, which is something many people have heard of, but never learned the true definition and the harm it can create. Schools and society need to be more proactive in explaining what plagiarism is, how to write correctly in order to prevent it, and teach the consequences plagiarism has.
Without academic integrity, learning can never be assured. Honesty is not fixated, and changes by situation. Everyone should strive for academic honesty or integrity. By trying your hardest and receiving what you deserve, you will go farther than anyone else in life.
With an excess of information readily available on the internet it can become difficult to distinguish reliable sources from untrustworthy sources. Being able to identify a reliable source is an essential skill needed to be owned in order to establish an individual’s credibility. In order to be able to authenticate a source as credible, it must first be evaluated and examined thoroughly. First off, before viewing the information a source has to offer the bibliographic information the source gives should be assessed. Some articles have bibliographic citations that lay the information out clearly.
Essay on Authoritative and Popular Sources in Discipline In my Athletic Training Major, many people have trouble selecting and understanding if a certain source is credible or unreliable. For research, many use either authoritative or popular sources to retrieve their information. Davy Gibbs (2016) defined authoritative sources to be “sources that are the most believable and usually written by an expert or a professional in a field of study.”
Welcome to the arena of communication where people watch victory-seeking participants battle with their words for the boost of self-esteem, prestige, and satisfaction that comes from winning. Watch out though. It can be a rough environment full of poorly developed, illogical, or misleading arguments better known as fallacies. The Writing Center at UNC Chapel Hill defines a fallacy most simply as a “defect” that weakens an argument. Hasty generalizations, slippery slopes, red herrings, and ad hominem are just a few types of fallacious offenses, intentional or unintentional, that can occur in communication.
