I would like to apply for the position of Clinical Psychologist within Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I feel that I have the relevant skills, competencies, experience and passion for working with older people to undertake this position to a high standard. I will outline below the ways in which I feel my experiences would meet the person specification outlined for this post.
Clinical Experience
Prior to embarking on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology training I obtained considerable experience working within older adult community mental health services and memory assessment services across a range of mental health trusts, including Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, during my clinical training I have maintained a passion and enthusiasm for working with older people and those experiencing cognitive impairment, with my twelve-month elective placement being within an older adult CMHT, Memory Protection Service and Challenging Behaviour in Dementia Service.

Additionally, I have been involved in providing a psychology resource to members of the CMHT and Memory Protection Service by providing consultation and supervision for cases that clinicians are finding challenging or feeling stuck with. This usually involves focussing on a specific case and drawing out formulations with staff in order to provide the bridge between assessment and intervention which staff can at times find challenging to do. As part of my current placement, I am also available to members of the memory protection service on a regular basis to provide supervision and support in the use of neuropsychological tools, specifically the
The aim of the agency is to develop knowledge and skills to cater the residents and ensure they enjoy their life at the aged care. Furthermore, the agency aims to enhance local expertise in mental and physical health care, improve care through training and foster a collaboration with academics, researchers, institutions, volunteers, therapists, doctors and other health care professionals.
Due to an ageing population , The Francis Report recommends the introduction of a new status of nurse, the “registered older persons nurse”. One of the illnesses linked in with this is dementia, and multiple factors relating to dementia are having an impact on how nurses are trained and their deliverance of services. In 2013, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) began a new development program to transform dementia care for hospitals. There aim is to develop skills and knowledge related to dementia, the roles of all those who are involved, understanding the development of action plans that identify key changes.
Clinical Supervision is the life wire of any health are professional. It is the on the job teaching that takes place between the supervisor and supervisee. It is a lifelong learning used for personal and professional development which is useful both in nursing education and clinical practice. Its benefit cannot be overemphasized as it is known to improve job satisfaction and prevention of stress /burnout. Supervision is important because it allows the novice to gain knowledge, skill and commitment.
Dementia is a disease which causes mental debility and affects one’s way of intelligent, attentiveness, recollection and problem-solving (NHS, 2013). As a result of dysfunction of brain cells in some parts of the brain it affects the thinking process then dementia occurs and it usually comes with age (Ibid). It is estimated that 560 000 people suffer from dementia in England and as a result the NHS and Social Care spend about 3.3billion (National Audit Offices)
Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
Slight Reminder of Credentials – In taking care of my mom, who was diagnosed with AD. I have learned first-hand that caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can be very stressful.

As part of a six week clinical placement I was posted in Aged care. During my clinical placement, I had an opportunity to enhance my knowledge about the ageing process. I had learned to apply advanced knowledge to plan appropriate care for an older person with complex health needs, analyse the principles underpinning best nursing care of an older person, integrate legal and ethical considerations into nursing care, including documentation and develop practice in relation to the care of a person with dementia.

Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. All the experiences I have had during the ten weeks of my student years have helped me in shaping me into a professional.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
This week’s clinical experience has been unlike any other. I went onto the unit knowing that I needed to be more independent and found myself to be both scared and intimidated. However, having the patients I did made my first mother baby clinical an exciting experience. I was able to create connections between what I saw on the unit and the theory we learned in lectures. In addition, I was able to see tricks other nurses on the unit have when providing care, and where others went wrong. Being aware of this enabled me to see the areas of mother baby nursing I understood and areas I need to further research to become a better nurse.
My activity has met my sub goal through increasing my ability to assess risk factors for diagnoses, recognize signs and symptoms of residents, and be able to identify the interventions for the diagnoses in my practice. The activity links to my overarching goal as I have mentioned that I wanted to promote positive outcomes in residents with dementia, by focusing on having a greater insight into the diagnoses, assessments, and interventions of dementia, delirium, and
