A defining moment in my life was when I decided that I wanted to be an athletic trainer. I chose this field because when I finish my athletic career, I wish to stay in the athletic field. For me there is no better job than one I can interact with athletes and help them prevent injuries. Knowing my career path early helped me lay out my academic goals, but no goals are accomplished without challenges arising.
Before I committed over four years of my life to an athletic training degree, I wanted to make sure that athletic training was the right career path for me. To do so I took classes that would be a good introduction into the field. I took an anatomy class in the 2014-2015 school year, and I am currently taking an athletic training class. Both of these classes have taught me various things about the medical field and I have enabled me the

chance to get many clinical hours. Although these classes have been greatly informational, there have been challenges. Athletic training takes a copious amount of time in class, and outside class. In the beginning of the year I took 6 academic classes, none of which were athletic training; this was the first challenge I faced. Without athletic training as a class I felt less confident going into college for an athletic training degree. To overcome this challenge I went to my counselor, Mrs. Lord, and requested to have my schedule changed so that I could take the class. Unfortunately, my AP class conflicted with the time the athletic training class was offered. I wanted to keep my rigorous AP class, so I asked if there was anyway that I could make it work. Mrs. Lord introduced me with an option called independent study. Independent study allows students to be taught individually by a teacher during a free period. The one on one attention i have received in this class has helped me obtain so much more knowledge, and give me insight into the profession. Without this class I would have felt less comfortable going into college with this major in mind. Since I was officially taking athletic training, I started to realize how time consuming the class was. To pass athletic training the student must have at least 50 hours of work. This work consists of five days of classroom time and at least one hour outside of the classroom a week. The extra hour can be doing treatment with an athlete, helping out at a sporting event, evaluating an injury, doing administrative actions, or doing game day/practice prep. To complete this extra hour, the student must go into the training room on their own time. Completing these hours brought upon a new challenge. Five days a week I went to class, completing 50 min of my hours every day.
The daily classroom work was not the challenge for me; it was fitting in the extra hour. Since I take part in volleyball and basketball, it is hard for me to cover other games or stay after school to get my extra hour. Luckily my teacher had a solution. Every Friday night high school football teams compete. The solution was for me to become a student athletic trainer for the football team. This means that I would have the chance to exceed my one extra hour by going to football games and helping before the game, on the sidelines, during halftime, and after the game. While helping out at football I learned a plethora of athletic training information that would not be taught in class. Along with helping out with the games, I got to come in the following day to injury reports. The day after the game, football players arrive to the training room and report and receive any treatment for existing injuries or injuries that happened in the game. Although these hours were a struggle to fit in at first, I am so thankful for this opportunity I was
given. Overcoming these challenges has helped me feel more confident with my plans of becoming an athletic trainer. I feel that independent study has helped me learn more and fully understand each topic and has gotten me more clinical hours, thus a leg up for my first year in college. Deciding to become an athletic trainer has helped shape my future and lay out a path for me to follow, and I could not be more happy about my decision.

In my life, I had not had the chance to be a part of something that influenced me much, until I joined football my freshman year in high school. Joining football was perhaps the most devoted and wisest thing that I did because shortly after joining I began to see changes for the better, and from then I saw the person that I wanted to be in the future. In other words, it shaped the person that I am today and will be for the rest of my life. Not only did the sport influence me but it also equipped me with a new mindset that affects me today in my decision making skills, time management and many other beneficial life virtues. I believe that these virtues will bring me success in the nearest future because I feel confident about myself and I feel more in control in my life through my actions, all thanks to simply joining what seemed to be a “regular” extracurricular.
A handful of athletes will have a chance to turn pro before they have completed their college career. Job-wise there is nothing better than getting paid for doing something that you truly love and enjoy. There is nothing wrong with players doing everything in their power to make them go pro. However it is a decision bound with peril.
When we were younger, most of us wanted to be a princess or an astronaut. Now that we’re older, we’re starting to consider more serious options. A sports medicine physician isn’t your run of the mill career choice, but I’m not known for running with the crowd. I am confident, hard working and able to stay calm under pressure. Sports medicine physicians diagnose and treat patients of all ages related to physical health. To become a sports medicine physician, you need many years of post secondary education and they make a relatively good salary. With most careers, there are advantages and disadvantages. There can be travel opportunities and that comes with long work hours and high stress levels.
My lifetime goal is helping others and I plan to use my career to fulfill it. The classes I’m taking right now and the ones I’m planning to take senior year are classes I believe will influence my decision in my college major/career as well as counting toward my GPA. This will help me get into schools who have medical programs that I’m considering. Also, taking AP classes can help me save money since I can earn college credit. I’m taking all AP classes, and the electives I’m taking have been classes that have helped me consider being in the medical field. I’ve found that over the years, science and math are what I’m doing better in versus history and english. I believe by being in the medical field, I can help others in the best way I can.
As a child, Stephen Curry was raised like any other child, except he grew up playing multiple sports. “In an age of hyper-specialization, Curry has reached the pinnacle of his sport by doing the exact opposite. He played basketball, but he also played some baseball, football, soccer and basically everything else in a sports buffet” (Cohen). Now, Curry is known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Is this because of his vast background of many sports? In today’s world, children should be introduced to a variety of different sports in order to promote discipline and hard work, prevent injury, and fulfill their college desires.
When I began high school, I decided to focus on my academics and athletics because I felt those were the most important to my future. I chose my classes carefully so that I would not only be challenged with rigorous classes, but also learn the value of working hard individually and as a team. As I’ve matured over the last few years I realized that I’m able to participate in a wider range of activities and still excel in my academics and athletics. I intend to continue to balance activities such as these while attending
The NCAA has been around for more than 100 years. Recruiting has evolved immensely over this period of time. Dozens of recruiting laws have been added over the years. The NCAA is strict about these laws, and many schools have been punished for breaking them. One law that many coaches are trying to get passed is the law against the recruiting of young athletes. Why is this? College coaches are beginning to recruit athletes at a very young age. This can have a negative impact on the athlete’s mental and physical state. The pressure exerted on these young children to decide their future completely takes away their childhood. It is also an enormous amount of pressure on the athlete’s parents. It can be hard trying to find the right balance between getting involved in your child’s decision or handing them the full reigns in
I was offered a kinesiology class as an elective. Kinesiology being an integral part of physical therapy. I decided to take it because I was on the football team and I was required to keep myself in top physical shape. From what I understood about kinesiology, I thought it would be helpful to know the inner mechanics of working out and staying physically fit. During my time in that class I learned about the musculoskeletal system, nutrition, anatomy, and just about everything that has to do with kinesiology. At the time, I didn’t really consider a career in kinesiology, I had a stronger interest in science, but my interest in kinesiology was still prevalent. Had I followed this interest, my choice would have been way easier to make and I would already have a plan of what I want to do.
While not many acute injuries, or injuries that are associated with a traumatic event can be prevented, nearly all overuse injuries can be! Nevertheless, sports medicine physicians receive training to treat any kind of injury; acute, chronic, overuses or even psychogenic pain. Sports medicine dates back to Susruta of India who was the first “recorded” physician to prescribe moderate daily exercise around 600 B.C. (Tipton). Since then, professionals have redesigned and renovated the techniques and equipment used in this field. Sports medicine physicians go through years of education and training in order to effectively treat and interact with patients, as well as thrive in any workplace they are needed.
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
There is never enough of anything in the life of a college student. there is never enough time to study, or enough food, or enough money, or enough time to sleep. But, if that student becomes a college athlete then all of the “or’s” change to “and’s”. Even though there are many struggles of a college athlete they are not going away. As the youth of America watches their older counterparts excel in many college sports, a dream to become an athlete at the collegiate level is sparked. This dream is fueled through high school sports and then disseminated by high school counselors. Counselors who are quick to remind that sports do not bring home a paycheck. Neverless, this dream of college sports thrives and is present in the mind of every high
What is Athletic training, and what could someone do with an athletic training degree? Athletic training is a unique field because it requires a strong mental and physical ability. These trainers go by many different titles such as: physician extender, wellness manager, rehab specialist, etc. Many trainers do not work under anyone, as they have their own office outside of the athletic setting. However, these trainer also work in many other places, such as: universities, hospitals and clinics, professional sports fields, military bases, etc. With a degree in this field, one might want, for example, to work in a hospital or clinic, as stated above. What would he/she be responsible for in this particular setting? A trainer working in a hospital would try to ease the pain of the injury and help move the patient through the process of the treatment.
