The Tlingit tribe is a tribe located in southeast Alaska. This is a tribe where men and woman can assume leadership skills of their clan. Today the tribe is a lot more commercialized because they have had to adapt. The tribe tries to keep their cultural beliefs going despite of the new culture change. Although times have changed for this tribe they still keep their customs alive with their traditional ceremonies, and their traditions that are passed down to the children from generation to generation. For example the men hunt for food and women help with food gathering, childcare, and housekeeping. The men would use canoes to get around in the water so they can catch fish salmon in particular. Today they use diesel-powered boats to catch fish with nets. Also the women work in modern canneries, and make blankets. Moieties have subcategories for example eagle, raven, and wolf. From those three there are other subcategories which depend on where you live. The social groups define themselves by the location of where they live. They also take into consideration the time, and space of the house as well as the experience of the family. This is where the clan names make sense because it depends on where they live and what they are good at which is why the experience is needed. Although the Europeans did have influence on the Tlingit there are still objects that are considered valuable. For example names, stories, speeches, songs, dances, and landscape features. There are also the typical valuables like buildings, rivers, totem poles, berry patches, canoes, and works of art. The wealthiest Tlingit had slaves before 1867. Wealth of a person or family was calculated by the number of slaves held. They would take slaves from all over. During potlatch the tribe would set a slave free, and use them for sacrifice so that the ancestors would have slaves in the afterlife. One such group, the Tlingit, used art to create and portray its rights, privileges, and talents inherited to them and became symbols of tribal importance. As they lived in extended family tribal canoe houses, they used art to decorate and empower their tribe in their social structures and often commissioned elaborate artwork in order to create jealousy within the groups. Because the Tlingit culture believed that they were all descendants of animals, the subject matter of most Tlingit art is a highly stylized representation of their ancestor animal. Though religious belief was integrated into Tlingit artwork, it remained an iconographic representation of a tribe’s lineage serving many roles such as power and protection.
Each one of the Timucua villages was ruled by a chief who exacted tribute in the form of food from the villagers. Village chiefs owed allegiance to a tribal chief who had numerous villages under his control. These chiefs were selected from important clans, and they inherited their title and wealth from their mother’s brother. The chief with the most important village often had the greatest power and influence; power grew out of the respect and prestige afforded that chiefs village (Milanich 151). Timucua villages had several titles for their villages such as holata, utina and paracusi, but the most important received the title utina or paracusi. These titles are really weird, it just seems like they mushed a couple of letters together to make a word that may sound nice. I don’t even know how to pronounce none of these words, I’m so glad we don’t have any hard titles to say for the people that are in charge of our states and country. Tulalip tribe is a place where government allow the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skyimish, and other allied bands living in. the Tulalip tribe’s land cover 22,000 acres. The Tulalip tribe has abundant nature resources to supply their people’s normal life such as “marine waters, tidelands, fresh water creeks and lakes, wetlands, forests and developable land” ( who we are). In conclusion the Kwakiutl tribe is steadfast in tradition and culture. The works of the Kwakiutl artists and the leaders of the religious ceremonies are most certainly working hand in hand carrying on traditions past on from earlier generations. The Kwakiutl artisans have mastered the art of making ceremonial masks and these masks will continue to play an intricate role in the lives and living of the villagers for years to come.

This book also discusses things such as who are their descendants and the use of treasure maps to discover new things. Concepts such as who the descendants are and using treasure maps to discover new things. This book was an easy read, in fact, the chapters flew by pretty quick, because they flew by quickly, I often had to re-read some sections. By making this book an easy read, Pauketat does a good job of not assuming that anyone knows about the Cahokian culture. He does however, does an excellent job of explaining things in detail. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about a Native American culture.
Throughout history, there has been a continuous movement of people, including European settlers and aboriginal tribes. The movement of these two groups of people has assisted in shaping and refining the world as we know it today. With each moving experience these groups of people had their own set of challenges and various difficult aspects present at various times throughout their journey. Whether they faced a foreign language upon arrival, or the difficulty with navigating a new place, challenges became their norm. A specific movement of people would be the Europeans arriving in Atlantic Canada and having contact with various aboriginal tribes. During the fifteenth century, the Europeans set out to find new land, natural resources and spices. The Europeans had contact with one particular group of aboriginals known as the Beothuk, who resided in Newfoundland. The relationship with this tribe and the European settlers was like no other. The conflict between these two groups was quite evident and caused trouble between the Beothuk and Micmac as well. The Beothuk tribe no longer exist. The Lenape tribe is tribal community now mostly known as the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Delaware Nation. They were also called Lenni Lenape. In their native language Lenni means genuine or real while Lenape means Indian or people (Waldman). The Lenape language was originally taken from an Algonquian language. However, the Lenape language was wiped out and currently there are very few Lenape Indians that are capable of speaking their native language fluently. There are currently very few Lenape Indians and most are located in Canada and parts of the United States. They were branched into several different clans. They lived mostly near rivers and were divided into three major clans. The first clan was the tukwsi-t or the wolf the second was the pukuwanku or the turtle and pele' which translates to turkey (Waldman). For thousands of years they lived peaceful lives and survived off of planting and hunting. Women were strongly valued in this tribe therefore they followed a matrilineal system. Everyone in the tribe had specific roles even the children. As the first European explorers arrived the tribe’s life shifted drastically. For the Lenape tribe the 1700s was a devastating time.

This paper addresses the results of interviews, observations, and research of life in the Ottawa tribe, how they see themselves and others in society and in the tribe. I mainly focused on The Little River Band of Ottawa Indian tribe. I researched their languages, pecking order, and interviewed to discover the rituals, and traditions that they believe in. In this essay I revealed how they see themselves in society. How they see other people, how they see each other, what their values were, what a typical day was etc. I initially suspected that I would have got different responses from these questions but in reality the results in the questions were almost completely the same. I studied this topic because mostly all the people that are close to me are associated in the Ottawa tribe. I additionally love the Native American culture, I feel it is beautiful and has a free concept.

When you mention Alaska and the Arctic Circle, one envisions igloos, dog sleds, and invariably, Eskimos. However, little do most know, that what most refer to as Eskimos is actually a generalization representing three distinct groups. In order to understand the societies that live in this region and acknowledge their cultural differences we must explore the different groups that inhabit this region of which there are two: the Inuit, and the Yupik.
