Introduction Proper nutrition in children can have extreme affects on children when it comes to education. When a child is able to eat healthy meals daily, it helps them to learn, grow, and succeed in the classroom. In the United States, 1 in 6 children do not know where their next meal is coming from. Food insecurity is a major problem in the United States and is not going away anytime soon. Children in food-insecure homes are more likely to have behavioral problems, repeat grades, and have lower brain functions. Through the Backpack Buddies program, children not receiving an adequate amount of food are sent home with meals and snacks to help them get through the weekend. Thus, improving behavioral and academic problems, and working towards helping end malnutrition in children.

With a good nutrition, students are able to learn easier, they have fewer absences, and students’ behavior improves, thus causing fewer disruptions in the classroom. Every student has the potential to do well in school. Failing to provide good nutrition puts them at risk for missing out on meeting that potential. Taking action can provide healthier choices in school and life and can set students up for success in the future. Nutritional status can directly affect childrens’ mental capacity and increase or decrease their brain function. Certain deficiencies, such as iron deficiency, vitamin E and B, iodine, and zinc can affect cognitive abilities and mental concentration. A balanced diet for students can cause better behaviors in children. Malnutrition in children can lead to behavioral problems. Students who are consuming a nutritious diet, have more time in class, and students will have fewer interruptions in learning. There behavior may improve and cause fewer disruptions in the classroom, and create a better learning environment
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Sure, there is a lot one can do through organizations. There is donating, volunteering, and just talking about it, but not enough people are doing it. It is not enough to try and decrease the amount of children that are going hungry. It is not enough to help these families who cannot feed their children. It is not enough to end hunger. We maybe be able to stop it, and the answer may be looking towards school.

When the topic of world hunger is broached, the majority of people’s minds will automatically equate the two words with an impossible-to-solve problem affecting only Africa. There are more than 870 million individuals in the world who suffer from chronic undernourishment, with the majority of undernourished individuals residing in Asia or the Pacific. While Africa understandably rises to the forefront of the mind when hunger is discussed, the statistics prove that hunger permeates into a plethora of regions, and affects a wide range of countries, cultures, and age groups. Despite its wide reach, global hunger is a solvable problem. The fact that a solution has not yet been implemented speaks loudly to the lack of cooperation being exhibited throughout the world. There is more than enough food to end world hunger; it is merely a lack of proactivity and cooperation among those in power that continues to allow the problem to grow. Solving world hunger may seem to be a daunting task, but a solution is within reach as long as a more cohesive semblance of cooperation throughout the globe (including both developed and developing countries) is achieved. This cooperation would embrace the sharing of excess goods to countries in need of them, as well the establishment of sustainable agricultural systems in countries currently lacking them—goals which are only achievable through recognition of the problem and an increased involvement by the entire globe.
