Being broke was one of the greatest times of my life. Granted it had its many downfalls, such as barely being able to buy the necessities and wearing those godawful hand-me-downs, the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009 brought my family together and helped shape me into the person I am today. With my parents being divorced, it was particularly hard to “keep our head above waters” yet they somehow found a way to manage. Leaving me with many fond memories, I am oddly thankful for those troubling times. Life was different, depending on whether I was with my mother or father. When my brother and I stayed with our mother, we lived in this cozy brick town-home that we were truly blessed to live in, considering my mother only graduated from high school. However, he had to complete 57 credits by the end of his senior year to have a position waiting for him as soon as he walked across the stage. “Impossible!” some may say, but with the permission from the Vice President of Academics, my father accomplished this. Except in 2009, his dream job failed him, leaving him unemployed for 22 months, which then caused him to reconnect with some old friends and begin to occasionally sell cars in a particularly sketchy part of town. One cannot fathom the many “hoopty’s” I rode in, especially a certain red hole-in-the-floor 1980’s Lincoln. I will never forget the day when my father was going 70mph down the freeway, one hand on the wheel, the other batting at the seats as I screamed and jumped about the backseat as an arsenal of ants crawled from the trunk and made their way towards the front.
