Originating from a 1905 novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess was first released in the United States in 1995 (Barnes & Noble). Richard LaGravenese and Elizabeth Chandler created this classic screenplay. Alfonso Cuarón, winner of The New Generation award at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, directed this film (IMDb). Family drama and fantasy is the genre. The main character is Sarah Crewe, followed by sub-characters Captain Crewe, Miss Minchin, Ermengarde, Lavinia and Becky (IMDb). Sarah is an intelligent, polished, motherless, wealthy child living in India with her father, Captain Crewe. Captain Crewe toke Sarah to a Victorian style boarding school in New York while he was away at war. Miss Minchin, the headmistress, takes a disliking to Sarah immediately, as does the school bully, Lavinia. Sarah immediately bonds with her classmate Ermengarde, an awkward, fat, rather dull gal and Becky, an obedient, colored and articulate servant girl. Most importantly the primary theme of A Little Princess is perseverance through social class changes. A Little Princess effectively represents the theme because Sarah’s spirit is not broken when she experiences jealousy, isolation, death of a loved one and poverty (Shmoop Editorial Team).
The plot unfolded when a messenger arrived at the seminary to notify Miss Minchin that Captain Crewe died and his estate had been seized. Miss Minchin would not be receiving any compensation for Sarah’s care. Little Rough Face - A Mi’kmaq Cinderella, adapted by Frances Jenkins Olcott, features a girl named Little Rough Face, who is beaten up by her elder sisters. This is understandable, considering that Little Rough Face is absolutely flawless, so of course her sisters would be jealous.
The movie, Loving, directed by Jeff Nichols is based on a true story about Richard, and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple fighting for their rights to stay married, and be able to raise their family in the state of Virginia where in the 1950’s it was illegal to be married to a race other than your own. Richard Loving grew up in a small town called Caroline County in the state of Virginia, where he met Mildred and knew that he would do anything to be able to call Mildred his wife. Richard proposed to Mildred on an estate of land he bought for them to raise a family on one day. Mildred agrees to marry him, but unfortunately, they are aware that in the state of Virginia it is illegal for them to get married because of their anti-miscegenation law. They agree that they will go to Washington, D.C., where they will be able to become legally married. In 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving became legally married in Washington, D.C. When they return home to the State of Virginia they are harassed by the Caroline County police and thrown into jail because they got married outside of the state that they reside in, which is illegal in Virginia. Richard is set out on bail, but Mildred is forced to stay in jail for several more days. Richard and Mildred’s case was presented before a judge to decide the ramifications of their actions.

The film, Selma, is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. The film shows the struggles of the black community face with the blockage of their voting rights and the racial inequality during the civil rights movement. Selma is about civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. heading to the rural Alabama City, Selma, to secure the voting rights for the African American community by having a march to Montgomery. The film that I have chosen to analyze is “The Purge”. “The Purge” is a 2013 American horror film directed by James DeMonaco. It was released on June 7, 2013, to mixed reviews. I will be analyzing “The Purge” by looking at conflict theory, class division, the importance of the ethnicity of each individual character, and the government’s overall political and economic agenda. The movie Babel was an interesting movie that was able to capture many different cultures, and social classes. The movie took people from many different cultural backgrounds, and told a story in which their lives were interwoven though a tragedy. The movie was more than entertainment, as it not only addressed different cultural conflicts but also examined intercultural matters.
Titanic is an epic romance-disaster movie written and directed by James Cameron, and it is one of the highest box movie in the history of film industry. The movie depicts a love story of Jack and Rose. Jack was a talented, poor artist who wandered around the world and painted his pictures, and his ticket to Titanic was actually won by gambling at the bar 5 minutes before Titanic’s departure. While working her shift slim has a customer that starts harassing her over the name she has, but the companion of the annoying customer defends slim, which in turn starts a romance, later to become a marriage between the two (Kazan, 2002). The couple is later blessed with a daughter they name Gracie, and at the beginning the marriage seems to be a fairy tale out of a story book (Kazan, 2002). This movie starts off as Jordan Belfort, the main character in the movie, losing his job as a stockbroker in Wall Street. After losing his job, he goes and gets a job in a Long Island brokerage room. In the brokerage room, he sells penny stocks. Thanks to him being aggressive in his selling skills, he was able to make a profit. With the new income, he gives his wife a bracelet and she asked him why doesn’t he go after the people that can afford to lose money, not the middle-class people or lower income people. That is when he gets the idea to get a lot of young people and train them to become the best stock brokers.
