I feel like I have grown a significant amount over the course of the semester. Coming into this class, I was not necessarily sure what to expect. I am extremely appreciative of the fact that you were very straight-forward with us. It was evident that you cared about your students doing well. As a future mental health professor, I appreciate that you were always willing to help. So, thank you. Before entering EPSY 341, I did not really have a position on multicultural education. With these two characteristics together, I feel like I can be very successful in any career choice, especially the mental health. I realize that I am likely going to have patients of multiple cultural backgrounds. Pairing clients with diverse backgrounds with others who are disabled for example, is a great way to be inclusive. The client’s perception of their self is what matters more. The last is context. The clinician must understand the client in a context of multiple systems, with culture being just one of them. While culture may have a great impact on the individual, other systems including family or work can have similar effects, as well. The complete world of the client must be accounted for in all areas of treatment.
Issues of individual and cultural diversity: different therapists may be more sensitive to certain aspects of their client’s conditions of worth (different values between client and therapist). Coming from different cultures can affect created conditions of worth for both.

In this reflective analysis of NAEYC Standard three, Observing, Documenting, and Assessing to Support Young Children and Families, I will first reflect on my growth, as an early childhood professional, during my course of study. Secondly, I will address my strengths related to the standard and discuss areas in need of further professional development. Finally, I will outline my goals for future growth and development. Early childhood educators demonstrate professional competence by understanding the role of assessment and the various methods of assessing student learning, including observation, documentation and standardized testing. Another vital aspect of multicultural counseling is the relationship between the therapist and counselee. It is essential that both parties are aware of the existing cultural differences. As a professional counselor, I will continue to educate myself properly, so as to give the best counsel by building trust and rapport. The cultural competence seen in the health care system enables the ability of an organization to accommodate people with diverse languages, beliefs and values, and still work with harmony under the same system.
Cultural competence can be defined as using the ability of one’s awareness, attitude, knowledge and skill to effectively interact with a patient’s many cultural differences. Madeline Leininger, a pioneer on transcultural nursing describes it this way; “a formal area of study and practice focused on comparative human-care differences and similarities of the beliefs, values and patterned lifeways of cultures to provide culturally congruent, meaningful, and beneficial health care to people” (Barker, 2009, p. 498). The importance of cultural diversity in healthcare allows for the delivery of appropriate cultural autonomy. Showing respect for others will lead to trust between nurse and patient which in turn improves healing and health.
In the other hand, “simply recognizing and accepting cultural diversity is insufficient to attain cultural competency in health care”, as cited by Edelman (2014, p.26). It is important that before we get to know and understand other cultures, we are able to recognize our own beliefs and values, and more importantly, that we do not attempt to influence others with our own culture. At the start of this semester I wasn’t sure what to expect. The last attempt I made to take Psychology 101 was eighteen years ago, just out of high school, fresh into junior college. That class was overwhelming, not to mention boring, and I was not able to wrap my head around the information. I did end up withdrawing from the class. So, at the start of this semester I was nervous that this experience might be similar. I can honestly say it was not! My instructor made the material interesting, fun, and left me excited to return to class the next week. There were many topics that were covered throughout this semester. And a few of the chapters, Learning, Life Span Development, and Motivation and Emotion really resonated with me. Concepts I learned within in these chapters really got me thinking and some I am even trying to apply to my life now.
My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
Today, as we graduate, with degree nearly in hand, I challenge each of you to make a difference in whatever you do. Remember that life didn't end when we re-entered school. Life continued throughout our program. Even when stretched to the limit, life only got more challenging. And now, graduating, life only changes pace. Our degree completion is not really an ending as much as a new beginning as we re-enter our lives of work and home. We thank all of our family, friends, instructors and co-workers who helped see us through this process. Thank you for this opportunity and good luck to you all.
Some of my personality traits include; empathy, strong willed, and ambitious. Beginning with empathy, it is the ability to recognize and to share the thoughts to some extent. In many cases empathy leads to multiple good relationships. As a Support worker, I am expected to get along with others very well. These include my workmates and my patients. Being empathetic also enables me to be considerate. I am able to identify with my patients problems very well. They will therefore easily entrust me with their problems with the assurance that they won’t be criticized. In such a situation, as a Support worker I will be able to assist them without any barriers (Allen, 2006).
