Environmental Apocalypse
The environment is in a terrible condition and although an environmental apocalypse is not imminent we are definitely headed down that road. Some of the reasons for our Earth’s trouble are overpopulation, consumerism, and overconsumption.
The earth’s population is ever increasing; it is only a matter of time before there are not enough resources to support life on the planet and the population begins to die off due to lack of food, water, and other resources. With our current population increase rates the population will double within the next century. “Indeed, the world population did double in thirty-seven years from 1950 to 1987.'; (Ehrlich, 1990) The problem with overpopulation is that even if we all reduce our impact on the environment, when the population doubles, so will the total impact on the earth will be doubled.
Consumerism is another thing that is threatening our planet. Everyone who wants to be anyone “must have'; whatever is cool at the time. This usually means the biggest, meanest, least efficient car or the fanciest toys, generally leading to wasteful packaging and harmful chemicals or other bad stuff. “In short, Impact = Population * Affluence * Technology.'; (Ehrlich, 1990) The problem is that everyone cares too much about societies image of them that they don’t think about the results of their actions.
We also have a problem with the consumption of our resources. Many of the resources that we rely like fossil fuels, forests, and water are non-renewable. We are rapidly depleting these and have nothing to use when they are gone. Our society will have a lot of trouble turning around their habits until we are desperately low on them and it will be too late. It will be difficult to develop alternative technologies because of a lack of government funding, and the people who have the money (oil companies) do not want their income taken away by a different resource.
In “The minister’s black veil” The black veil Mr.hooper puts on is to prevent people from spying on his private life. The veil symbolized that human nature is blinded by sins and they way the town treated him after he started wearing the veil shows that there faith is blind they couldn't understand where he was coming from. “ Mr. Hooper's conscience tortured him for some great crime too horrible to be entirely concealed, or otherwise than so obscurely intimated. Thus, from beneath the black veil, there rolled a cloud into the sunshine, an ambiguity of sin or sorrow, which
Sheridan Garrison was committed to connecting with their people to ascertain how they felt though constant communication. FedEx and scriptures put emphasis on building trust and putting the needs of other before your own. Employee satisfaction results from the experience of one’s job and the atmosphere. Consistent with Brown, Gray, McHardy, &Taylor (2015), employee trust within the workplace influences workplace performance. Furthermore, Philippians 2:4-5 conveys that we should not only look out for our own interests, but take an interest in others, as well. You must have the same attitude that Christ had. FedEx Freight’s policy and scripture are very similar. They both relate to putting the needs of others before your own and the importance of trust in our leadership. Isaiah 26:3-4 declares that the Lord will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him, because he trusts in him. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting
The story ‘’The Ministers Black Veil’’, is about a minister who wears this black veil, because he’s toting everyone’s sins. Have you ever wondered why the Minister at your church bears your sins? The minister at your church conveys your sins, because when you go to acknowledge to the minister about your inferior adjudications, he now knows about what you’ve done and has
“This veil that Mr. Hooper was wearing represents that everyone has something in their hearts that no one else knows about.” As time passed by and the minister still was wearing the veil the townspeople began to become very uncomfortable whenever in his presence. The simple reason behind this is the veil begins to make the congregation fear
The following quote gives some context to the minister’s symbolic belief of the veil: “When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his Creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die!” It is important to also realize that the veil is suppose to be a constant reminder to the minister of human sin and lies. The minister believes by wearing the veil he tangibly acknowledges his sin that so many pretend they don't have. The following quote supports that the
In the story “ The Minister’s Black Veil,” Nathaniel Hawthorne is trying to reveal that Mr. Hooper plays a significant role in the story and shows alienation and his moral values. Mr. Hooper was a new minister in a new town and people wondered about him because he constantly wore a black veil over his face. They wanted to know what was being hidden under the veil. Mr. Hooper is trying to reveal that the black veil is representing that he is sinful, depressed, mysterious and secretive.
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, "The Minister's Black Veil," he paints a visual of early American Puritanism. The story takes place in a small New England town of Milford. In this town Mr. Hooper is a reverend who mysteriously wears a black veil one day. Due to the black veil that is worn, Reverend Hooper receives heavy mounts of criticism from the towns people, while rumors are also made by the towns people. Through these acts, performances of contrasts and contradictions are displayed in this short story.
There are many efforts to reverse the effects we accelerated; countries around the world are supporting green change and aim to ultimately benefit the existence of humanity. Greener transportation, greener disposal of objects, and a greener mindset and understanding of waste. The wasteful habits we exhibit today are not conducive to the progression of our world as a “healthy” planet. Individuals have the opportunity to help out and do the right thing, they have the tools to do it; facilities and resources surround us on a daily basis. We need to recognize it. By realizing the effect we can have on the world, we can make a
In the story “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the reader can infer that Mr. Hooper teaches his community the lesson that everyone wears a black veil and has secret sins that are hidden from others. Mr. Hooper states, “...if I cover it for secret sin, what mortal might not do the same?”(lines 280-281) Normally, a priest would not wear a black veil while preaching in front of everyone. This could have been interpreted by his community as an act of betrayal to God. The reason for that can be that Mr. Hooper might be hiding something and as a priest to the church to covering his face with a black veil can be interpreted as if he was hiding a secret or sins he is not trying to show others. When serving the
In “The Minister’s Black Veil”, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hooper’s isolation to reveal the judgemental assumptions and moral values of the community. By assuming of the different possibilities of a sin he could have committed, the community demonstrates their true colors. When Hooper first arrives, they are swift to imagine that a grave sin is the purpose for the black veil. Also, by isolating Hooper, the town demonstrates how judgemental they are and how important appearances are to them. Finally, the community fails to realize the intention of the veil by constantly speculating the sin that causes Hooper to wear the veil.
FedEx is best known for its by-line of “when it absolutely, positively has to get there”. This is but one reason FedEx is the leader in the industry. Fred Smith founded FedEx in April of 1973. Smith incorporated such management principles that have made FedEx an overnight success. These principles have made FedEx employees show unprecedented dedication to their work and to their company. On August 20, 1997 – Federal Express Corp. distributed an approximate $20 million Special Appreciation Bonus to nearly 90,000 U.S. operations employees in recognition of their extraordinary efforts. It’s no idle boast to say that they are a family.
One of the problems facing our world is population. It began about ten thousand years ago when the humans settled and began farming. The farming provides more food for the people thus making the population grow. Now we are about 6 billion in population and in a few years we will be around 10 to 11 billion. Therefore, our population will almost double in size. This means that we will need more food to support us. A study in 1986 by Peter Vitonesk, a Stanford biologist, showed that the humans are already consuming about 38.8 of what is possible for us to eat. Thus, if the population keeps increasing, the percentage will increase also, making us closer and closer to the biophysical limits. By studying the earth's capacity, Dr. Cornell, another biologist, believes that we are already crowded for this would. He believes that our world can only support two million people. Not only this, but population can cause complicated problems to the countries with very high population. These countries will need more schools to educate its people, they will need more hospitals and public health to take care of their people, and they will need more water and more soil for farming to feed all the people. In order to solve the population growth problem, the people should be educated. Once the people are educated they will be aware of the problems they ca...
Human population growth is becoming a huge issue in our world today. The population is increasing rapidly. The reason that it is becoming a concern is because it has affected the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our world. In the film Frontline: Heat, we can see how there might not be a future for our planet unless we are able to reduce the emissions and make our world a safe place. Not only for the present but also for future generations so that they are able to live long and healthy lives.
It has been a common discussion for us to dismiss television as a result of the negative things that most of the young viewers tend to copy and practice later on after watching. Johnson is mistaken when he says watching television makes you smarter and because he overlooks the fact that reality television does not teach us what is really going on in our society. For example, shows like “fear factor” (Johnson, 293) where people are being asked and deceived to do crazy things like overcoming their fear and would stoop down so low for the money. Johnson claims that “we need a change in the criteria we use to determine what really cognit...
Many people assume that the environment is not in danger. They believe that as technology advances, we do not need to worry about renewing natural resources, recycling, and finding new ways to produce energy. They state that one person in the world does not make a large difference. In reality, each individual's contribution greatly affects our environment. Our natural resources are slowly disappearing, and we must work together to save them and the Earth from ruin.
