I am a morning kind of person and I am very lucky to have an enormous study room with a good environment to be in. I have always believed that it is very important to turn up in my study room whether I feel like it or not, whether I have ideas or not, I have got to have the work ethic that makes me show up. When I have a piece of work going, I like to be there. It is very important to close off all the avenues to the outside world like the internet, my phone, email, I switch all those things off and try to get solid work done. Throughout my English education, I have come a long way of adapting to new writing skills and techniques. After my English Honors class in high school, I thought I had all of the writing process figured out, only to enter English 101 in College that has changed the perspective. …show more content…
For example, I tend to make run-on sentences. I noticed my run-on sentences when I would get feedback from students on my rough draft essays. The peer-review process was a tremendous help in having other students look over my essays mistakes and what I should do to make my essays have a higher quality in writing. In general, the revision process was beneficial throughout the semester because it gave me an insight of what my paper should contain and also to make comparisons between papers. Furthermore, my writing from this course is much more properly written than my past written papers because I have learned to use transitions to organize my papers, evaluate my sources in papers, use grammar properly, and construct a accurate Thesis on a topic. Before, I did not know how to cite or quote my research, but examples and activities from this course were an
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Before taking Mrs. Hawkins’ English 102 class, I used to hate writing; no, I despised it. Along with my hatred for writing, I, as many other college students, am a terrible procrastinator. In my past English classes, my procrastination had affected my grades, especially when it came to papers dealing with multiple steps and drafts, due to the fact writing takes many timely processes to
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. English 102 has taught me many things about writing like locating sources from the library and on line as well as continuing
...ts’ research. Why? Because I am certain that my professors already spent at least ten times the amount of research than I did; so my professors do not really get excited to see those resources beyond doubt constructed again on my papers. No revision is deadly; I felt a chill behind my back after realizing my College English professors only gives one chance submitting for all her essay assignments. While one of my classmates seems to be carefree with it, I am yet to find this confident in my writing; this confident is perhaps what I am going to seek to obtain after the course.
In the beginning of English 101 I was what you call a novice writer a person who only wrote what they felt was required. However, certain techniques that I learned in English 101 made me realize that writing was not about filling requirements; it’s about speaking out, exploring and proving a point. “Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.” (Trimble, 17) In John Trimble’s quote he tries to point out that writing is something that you grow with and learn as you go along. I believe this growth was achieved with a technique that was introduced to me by my professor called repetitive revision. What I found out was that revision of your essays helps in recognizing your mistakes and enhances the flow of your essays. By providing me...
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. In order to have a passing final grade my essays need to display skills I have learned in the course that are required by the Portfolio Assessment Rubric or
Gradually through the whole semester, Peer Review sessions became a great and positive influence on my writing. It is very helpful to have two people with different views on writing read and critique my paper, and give me feedback on what they think I should improve or correct. We didn’t change peer review groups and I was very delighted because I have gotten a chance to see my group members grow as a writer. When it’s time to revise my paper before I turn it in for a grade, it is very helpful to have some options on what to exactly revise in my paper. For example, in my comparative analysis essay, both of my peer reviewers wrote that my introduction was not effective and i...
The first English course I took in college was a basic introduction to writing, during this course we learned how to write a good essay, we learned techniques to improve our writing and we learned how to organize our ideas and put them in a logical manner. We did a lot of discussions and during this class was the first time that I was involve in peer reviewing. My second course I took was with the same professor, Mr. Braun. I believe he was a great educator and he really showed interest in helping their students that’s why when I had the opportunity I choose him to be my professor
Over the course of this semester I have learned a lot from my English 1302 class. Through the instruction of Professor Keck as well as the Pearson textbook and the writing handbook I have been instilled with devices that I can carry with me for as long as I am writing. I have not only learned how to better my writing but also how to write arguments that are not only strong but effective.
There are several quarters in a year. In this quarter most students come with several plans that help them to prepare, to begin and end with the better result. Also, I was one of the students for those students, who prepared to learn a lot of things for each quarter. For example, I totally doesn’t like to read a book at all before, but when I start this start reading three to four pages per day… then I improve myself by reading one chapter per day especially every Tuesday I came prepared for Wednesday seminal class. This class (English 098) helps me to know more vocabulary words, to talk in the class, particularly during a seminar that helps me to improve my reading level and It helps to build my self-confidence (public speaking). In addition that I improve my study skill, due to many homework, assignment, Due to that I should study every, do my homework, most of the time I sleep late to finish my homework.
Why should I be one of your students for English Honors? Well, I am a very well organized student. I enjoy most school subjects (math is not one.) I try my best in all of my work. My strength as a reader is that since I enjoy it, I understand it. On the con side, I have to re-read specific things to remember. My strength as a writer is that once I have an idea, the words just come to me, but it does take me a while to decide what to write. A strength as a thinker is that I really let the information sink in, however, I do overthink things. I play musical instruments and love listening to music. When I have free time, I read. Basketball is one of my hobbies. I think I am a great student for English Honors.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
