Why should I be one of your students for English Honors? Well, I am a very well organized student. I enjoy most school subjects (math is not one.) I try my best in all of my work. My strength as a reader is that since I enjoy it, I understand it. On the con side, I have to re-read specific things to remember. My strength as a writer is that once I have an idea, the words just come to me, but it does take me a while to decide what to write. A strength as a thinker is that I really let the information sink in, however, I do overthink things. I play musical instruments and love listening to music. When I have free time, I read. Basketball is one of my hobbies. I think I am a great student for English Honors.

What I read influences my writing the most because the format I read teaches me better ways to write. For example, If I Stay first goes to present tense, showing what is going on in the hospital, then later on in the chapter goes back to the past. Songs and personal experience influence me as a writer. The songs teach me words that fit together to make it flow better. Like my reading, I enjoy writing about anything. Recently my main focus on writing is the reality, romance, and fantasy fiction. My strength as a writer is I go where my mind takes me, but it takes a while for me to decide which thing to write about and how to start it. It does this because it gives me a different perspective on things. Books can’t help me with difficult problems. Friends also give me some advice and I decide what the right thing to do is. Learning is difficult when either the teacher can’t explain it well for ME to understand or the teacher is talking really fast. I have an example in seventh grade, where my teacher would explain it really fast to the whole class, and it was difficult for me to understand, but once the teacher explain it a little more thoroughly and I have some quiet time at home to review it, I can pick it up. I guess you can say my struggle is that I need people to go over the topic thoroughly and not just skim through it. On the other hand, a strength I have is good persuasive skill. My way of reading has drastically change over the years being part of the writing arts program. My writing is better because my way of reading has also improve because they are so linked to each one gets affected by the other. Due to that I read other’s people writing my writing gets influenced by them because I easily takes note on their structure, tone, format and style. Being able to see how other’s write has inspired me to being open to the different styles of writing there
In my English class, I wanted to do well and ultimately became competitive to be the top student. I would read several passages, plays, and books through the year and at all times write as much as I could for the essays. My overall goal was to prepare for the ACT during junior year and earn “Advanced” score on my EOC/Benchmark scores. Hence, any writing techniques I could learn from my teachers, I would. I learned a majority of my writing skills and techniques in my sophomore and junior honors English classes. During my sophomore year, it was the first time I was in an honors course and it challenged me with writing even more. The summer assignment for the class was reading the book “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles and to complete and A, B, C of literacy techniques and elements, which was simple enough. While beginning the assignment, there was what appeared like a heap of unknown and new words, which left to question if the class was for me. By the end of that one assignment, I learned several new literacy elements and techniques that I would go on to enhance my writing as well as add new vocabulary to my everyday conversations and papers. My sophomore year also required a good amount of writing for state standardized tests. Beginning in grade school students are taught a basic curriculum for English, some of the basics being: five sentences equaling a paragraph and five paragraphs equaling a essay. The beginning of the English learning stage is a time to get engaged in reading and writing. Honestly, most children when they are younger start loving to read and write but do they stay that way throughout middle school, high school, or even college? No, nine out of ten times kids who started out loving to read and write end up dreading it. But why? Every students has their own personal reason. Some may have never fully understood how to read or write and was to embarrassed to speak up others may have disorders such as dyslexia which makes reading and writing difficult. In my case I had a passion for reading and writing when I was younger. As I grew up I did not like the material that had to be read or the papers that was required to be written; but since I knew the work had to be done accurately in order for me to pass the class I learned to tolerate the subject.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
Unlike math classes, there are no prerequisites to honors courses like history and biology. However, students in honors classes usually want to achieve and learn, or at least their parents want them to. Under this environment, I am able to surround myself with people that possibly have the ambitious character that I possess. Furthermore, the maturity of the students in honors classes is usually higher than the regular classes. Also, many honors students probably have been taking honors courses since middle school, which let the students to have similar background knowledge. Lastly, a reason and a benefit of me taking honors classes is the classes enables myself to improve my writing skills. Since English is my second language, I need to let myself to absorb as much knowledge as I possibly can so I am able to use it efficiency. All in all, my instinct desire caused myself to choose honors classes. Taking honors courses will help me in the long un. To achieve my goals and to improve my English
My junior year of high school was not one of the easiest years of my life. As a matter of fact, i think so far, it's been my hardest. Especially because of my AP English class. I had several other AP classes and honors classes, but this one seemed to be my greatest struggle. I am one of the very few people who enjoy and are actually great at mathematics. It is my favorite subject, closely followed by science. I always look forward to going to these classes. I also find an interest in government, which is why I currently take AP Government and politics. Back on the English track, I've never been much of a reader or writer, it's just something that I'm not very well at doing. Last year in AP English, I had a wonderful teacher who goes by the name of Mrs.Stagg.
I have the same problem with reading. If I like the book I enjoy reading it and I am able to finish it in a shorter time period. For example, it would be a lot easier for me to write an essay on The Hard Hat, because I can relate to this book and write about the lessons I learned from it. Another example is Iliad, the book I had to read in high school for my English class. Iliad tells us the story of the few weeks in the final year of the Trojan War. It is a great book about the suffering and loss of war, about family, friendship and love. I have always loved to read about Greek mythology, I love their myths and the great Greek poems like Homer and Aristotle. Therefore, I believe that is a lot easier for me to write on a topic I find interesting and challenging. This way, I am able to better understand the given assignment and go in depth with it. In addition, I can say that my life and all of the previous experiences I have had, every English course I have taken, every essay I have written has made me become the writer and reader I am today. Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
I believe that I am the best candidate for 9th grade honors classes in the Hillsborough High School. To begin, I am a respecting, and honorable person. When a student or teacher asks me to do something for them, I will always live up to it. I also rarely miss out on doing my homework. School is too important to be to not do great in a class because of homework.
I grew up in a small, close-minded, community that had insignificant minority people throughout it. I did not have a lot of experience with racial and ethnic groups. I did, however, have some experiences with children as well as adults who had learning disabilities as well as autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome. When I was in elementary school, I had a classmate who had down syndrome; she was in and out of our classroom periodically throughout the day. English was my least favorite subject. I hated reading, I hated writing, I even hated doing research. In My first semester here at Columbus State, I took an English 1100 class. In that class, I rarely came to class, turned every single paper in late, and I didn’t even show up for the final and ended up failing that course. I had to retake English 1100 in order to follow through with my Academic plans. I didn’t realize that I needed to change till after the first 2 papers of this semester. I learned that I had to learn how to manage my time, I realized that I have to start using the resources given to me, and I also had to learn to stop procrastinating.
As the end of the school year approaches I can literally and safely say that this class was by far the most rigorous and influential High School course that I have ever taken. No I haven 't had the best overall average in the class I can 't say that I still have taken away a lot and will be using a lot of the information that I have learned later on in life and especially in college. In the beginning of the semester I was a bit nervous for English 101 because I had not written a paper since my junior year of high school. The first essay was a good start for me since it was on a topic that I could easily relate to which helped me get my toes wet. After that it got a little more challenging since we started on research papers. I learned quickly that it takes quite a bit more time and patience. In high school, we were not required to use library sources, so it was much easier to find sources. I think that is something that I improved on over the course of the semester was finding stronger sources that supported my essays better. To do that, I relied heavily on the Lincoln Land library webpage, so I could utilize my time better.
I have been studying English for a couple of years, and for sure, I am much better speaker and writer now than I used to be 3 years ago. I am aware that I still have a long way to become fluent, and even though when I acquire fluency, English will continue being my second language.
