Penn Engineering’s interdisciplinary approach to education filled with penchant for invention, dedication to creating solutions to real problems around the world, commitment toward global citizenship, intellectual rigor, and bountiful resources will not only allow me to discover, develop, and deepen my multifaceted interests in engineering but also transform me into a socially aware engineer who is “without borders.”
When I was sixteen years old, I met engineering for the first time. Rather than blushing from shyness, I was daunted by the challenge it held: constructing a physical model of the caspase-3 protein based on the atomic coordinate data and its alpha carbon backbone display on Jmol (an online computer visualization program), as a participant of Science Olympiad competition. Thinking in 3-D might be a mindless task for most people, but recognizing the third dimension was one of the most grueling assignments for me. Spending hours rotating the 3-dimensional representation of the protein on Jmol, however, helped me break out of my two-dimensional bubble. Although there were times when I missed an amino acid in chain and I had to begin unwinding my work, observing the finished product boosted confidence in my ability to become a hands-on engineer.
In addition, the Biomedical Program at University of Maryland taught me how cellular and molecular techniques are changing the way we diagnose and treat disease. These experiences not only boosted confidence in my ability to become an engineer but also deepened my interest in cell and tissue engineering and microbial pathogenesis.

At Penn, I will not only enrich my own educational experience by practicing the skills I have learned and the ideas I have garnered inside lecture halls and labs but also channel these into positive action, making an impact and making a positive difference on global community. Penn’s uniquely integrated campus will allow me to integrate knowledge from different disciplines and my engineering skills with entrepreneurial insights, global service, and professional development opportunities to achieve my goal of making my mark on the Penn community and the larger world and address the world’s multifaceted problems.
I would like to thank Salish Kootenai College for giving me the wonderful opportunity of applying for STEM academy. If somebody had told me that I would be applying for college classes as a sophomore, I would not have believed them. My parents have always told me that when an opportunity comes, you should take it, and I do not plan on letting this experience go to waste. Education has been a big part of my life, and this academy can only help me move forward. That being said, here are a few reasons why I should be considered a candidate for the STEM academy. Joining the STEM academy will allow me to further my knowledge and help me to get closer to my goals, my academic career would flourish, and I would be closer to my ambition for my future. I am determined to become the best and most educated version of myself that I can possibly be.
It’s the triumphs as well as the defeats, that I will remember most about my life when I look back in thirty years. If I can look back and say, “I didn’t think I could ever accomplish this, but I gave it my all.” Pursuing the next challenge along with being a well-rounded, compassionate person will allow me to consider my life a success in thirty years. Nothing in my life emulates this attitude towards what I will consider a success, in terms of pushing my limits, in thirty years, than my current pursuit of collegiate level sports.
It was just the second week of school, and I had mustered up all my courage to venture to the nether regions of our school known as the basement to attend the first meeting of the newly forming FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team. When I walked into room one, the newly proclaimed FIRST headquarters, I looked around with apprehension, and I noticed that I did not recognize a single face in the room. Nervously, I took a seat, and Mr. Mothersele, the advisor for the program began describing the program. FIRST is a national engineering competition in which partnerships are formed between local businesses and high schools to design and build a robot-like machine from identical kits of parts supplied by FIRST. The team has about six weeks to build the machine which must be able to compete in a timed sporting event. As soon as I saw the video of the students working and competing with the robots, I was hooked. The program seemed tailored to my interest in math in science and to my competitive spirit. I couldn't resist the opportunity.
Travelling around the world gives an individual a unique perspective of life, culture and tolerance. In the tenth grade, I had the opportunity to embark on a journey which provided me with a unique perspective and view of humanity. Similar to my other trips to Europe my initial intention was to enjoy two-weeks away from school in continental Europe, however I was flabbergasted when I realized this two-week trip would serve to destroy my idealist view of a pluralistic society. Technology is increasing exponentially, and now I am a part of that ‘future’. When I look into my future, I see myself working toward the minimization of the human imprint in our world more specifically energy consumption. Being an Electrical Engineer, clean energy is an area that I am deeply passionate about. We are part of an ecosystem which is threatened every day by our wastes. Yes! My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
Now, on the brink of completing my first year of university studies, I look forward to my future. Having been captivated by computation and mathematics since a young age, I intend to attend graduate school, eventually attaining a doctorate in computer science, delving into research in high-performance computing, computer graphics, or algorithm analysis. Following this, my ideal position would be one in which I am able to pursue my innate love, problem solving. Whether in industry or academia, I hope to be able to dedicate myself to developing novel solutions to computational problems of all types.
