Christian Martinez Professor Cross English 113A 1 December 2016 Enders Shadow Essay By Scott Card Challenges is what keeps everybody from moving forward. To beat the challenges, it must take courage to put up with them. In the book “Ender’s Shadow” by Scott Card, we see each character have a challenge. Some pass through these challenges, but others fall behind. Bean, the protaginist of the book, was fighting for his life by trying to get some food on the streets. Later in the story he goes to Battle School and Command School. But to get where he is, he deals with a lot of challenges from the streets, Battle School, and Command School. Bean instincts was to analyze who had power and who was afraid of whom held power. From the time being, he found that the teachers had the power over the students. The launchies acknowledge Bean’s intelligence which made him distant from the kids until he started slowly getting the respect he wanted from the launchies except from the teachers. The teachers were aware of Bean’s abilities. They would test him to see if he ever fell for them. In the book, Captain Dimak says, “He knows it isn’t a game. He doesn’t want us analyzing the working of his mind”.(145). This is all a chess game for Bean. He gets around these obstacles and gets what he wants without giving something important for him. Another challenge Bean had was showing Ender he can be a leader. In the book, Ender states,” You’re late, Bean, and you’re still rinsing. I’ve already got flash suit down in the gym. All we need now is your ass in it...”.(268). Bean always wanted to show that he can be good as Ender. But after, Bean was trustworthy and reliable for Ender. Before leaving Battle School to Command School, Bean last challenge in Battle School was Achilles comeback. Achilles started to shout about Rotterdam and Bean replied,” Here in Battle School, we don’t tell stories about home and we don’t listen to them either. So I’d appreciate it if you never spoke again of anything that happened in Rotterdam, not while you’re in my army”.(369). Bean showed power and leadership over
