One of the questions I've been asking myself for ages was why we relate to a character on screen even though we know they're fictional.
As a psychology major, I've always wanted to know why we relate ourself to an actor/actress in movies. How is it that we mostly share the feeling of pain or sorrow with a character and not happiness or joy? After doing my research, I found out that our life experiences are the main reason for this cause. The two most important aspects for this cause is Empathy and Sympathy. These two things are what we expeirience on a day-to-day basis. Even after knowing that a character is fictional and that the scenes enacted by them are just a script written by someone, that "someone" makes the characters draw our attention
with their slippery claim to have reality through empathy which helps us to understand and share the feelings of others and through sympathy by feeling pity or sharing a common feeling of pain. We try to reconstruct what they go through and view life from their point of view by showing feelings of pity and sorrow. During the time period of the movie, we understand and share the characters feelings more than we know of our loved ones. Also, directors use the idea of reverse psychology where they use a certain approach to encourage the subject of persuasion to do what is actually desired, the opposite of what is suggested. Even in situations where we might not have experienced the same circumstances as the character, we still connect mentally with them because of the emotional bond between the character and ourselves. From this research, I have found that we as humans take ourselves towards pain and sorrow no matter how happy they are because being happy doesn't get us to feel the satisfaction we get when recovering from a pain or obstacle because when we rise to the top of a summit, we watch the best sunrise.
Many authors express themselves through their writing using their life experiences as inspiration. Richard Wagamese is no exception; he was born in Minaki, Ontario and comes from Ojibway decent. As a child, he was taken away from his biological family and put into several foster homes, where he faced neglect and abuse. Later on in his life, he began to write books and poetry to cope. We are introduced to the concept of personality through the lens of experimental social-psychology. What makes a person relate to a character? In the 1980’s authors began to utilize more imagery in their works to grasp audiences. With each character comes different languages and different viewpoints. When using imagery, the images the author wishes to convey come naturally. Louise Erdrich dug deep into her own ancestry which overtime inspired her short stories, poems, and novels (Louise). With background knowledge, she has been inspired to write about the relationships between Native and non-Native cultures. According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. After reading this article, I do agree with Huffington about how individuals need to fully understand and put themselves within the situation to fully comprehend the issue to solve.
Human beings surpass other animals in the ability to vicariously experience other beings feelings. Two overlapping and interchangeable terms have been developed to explain human’s capacity to experience others’ feelings- sympathy and empathy. Though convenient, the interchanging has created some confusion. Burton, in his support, points out people always confuse the word empathy with sympathy, compassion as well as pity, which are just but reactions to other people’s plight (1). Empathy is imperative to teach kids from a young age in order to help them recognize mental states, such as thoughts and emotions, in themselves and others. In the article “The Baby in the Well: The Case Against Empathy,” Paul Bloom puts forward a tendentious thesis. Empathy, according to him, is overrated. The imaginative capacity to put oneself in the place of an oppressed, afflicted, or bereaved person does not lead to rational, thoroughly-considered solutions to important problems. Indeed, it can lead to hysterical displays of ill-directed charity, the misallocation of resources, and total blindness to other significant issues. In the book, The Stranger, Merseault is convicted of first degree murder. During the questioning Merseault is indifferent about the murder. Lawyers note that Merseault feels no remorse towards his violent action and as a result of this, the jury finds Merseault guilty; the penalty is execution. The jury believes he is a danger to society and calls him a monster. Merseault lacks empathy; he is unable to recognize and respond to other people’s feelings (Baron-Cohen). However, this is not enough to state that Merseault is a danger to society. Does Merseault lack more than just empathy? Is he a psychopath?
There are many different types of characters in stories, and each has been described differently leaving different impression to readers. Reading some stories gives the readers the feeling of empathy for characters. Speaking about characteristic, it is great to know how a character feels in order to understand the story. Through this essay, I would like to show how stories make the readers feel empathy to other’s concerns, feelings, and troubles.

Devising the perfect murder is a craft that has been manipulated and in practice dating back to the time of the biblical reference of Cain and Abel. In the play, “Trifles” exploration is focused on the empathy one has for a murderer who feels they have no alternative from their abuser. As a multifaceted approach, the author Glaspell gives her audience a moral conflict as to whether murder should be condemned based on the circumstances rather than the crime. It's the story about a relationship About 2 boys called Hassan and Amir that at this time in the book they were victims and innocents and don't deserve a punishment on the story. Relations between sympathy-empathy expressiveness and fiction have become a significant issue in the debate on the emotional responses to the film fiction. Due to their complexity many scholars found it useful to diagram them. With his essay, “Empathy and (Film) Fiction”, Alex Neill tries to develop new theory for analyzing the fiction and, especially, the emotional responses from the audience on it. The project of this essay is represented with an aim to show the audience the significant value of the emotional responses to the film fiction. From my point of view in the thesis of his project he asks a simple question: “Why does the (film) fiction evoke any emotions in the audience?”, further building the project in a very plain and clever way. Tracing the origins of this issue, he distinguishes between two types of emotional responses, sympathy and empathy, as separate concepts in order to understand the influence of both types of emotional responses to fiction. However, relying mostly on this unsupported discrepancy between two concepts and the influence of the “identification” concept, Neill finds himself unable to trace sympathy as a valuable response to fiction. This difficulty makes Neill argue throughout the better part of the text that empathy is the key emotional factor in the reaction to (film) fiction and that it is a more valuable type of emotional response for the audience.

The skill that I am the best at or at least would give myself the highest score in would be showing empathy. I am not sure why I am skilled in this it just seems to come naturally to me. I have always found myself to be a very empathetic person who is able to understand the thoughts, feelings, beliefs and, attitudes of others almost as well as my own. One way that I have shown empathy is by being open to learning about the experiences of others including other cultures, races and religions.
