What gives oneself the inner drive to survive hard times? People climb out of stressful situations by looking for the motivation and love that others are willing to share. By spending time understanding others feelings one may learn to understand their own. Yet there are times when others are not willing to share. In times like these one must be willing to let go of the past and move forward, to not lose the true meaning of life. With empathy and resilience one will bear the capability to survive any circumstance. A survivor’s eyes can see the good in everything giving a strong sense of empathy. Empathy not only can be helpful to oneself for survival but can also be beneficial to others. It reminds people what they are working for and refuels their motivation to survive. In catching Kayla, she is sometimes called a wimp by people who don’t understand her condition, yet she rejects their words and continues running because she has plenty of resilience to get her going again. Kayla says “I didn’t want to be treated differently, and I didn’t want to be looked at differently” (Crouse). Like Kayla a survivor must be willing to handle the pressures of society by ignoring them to discover and achieve their ambition. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph shows both empathy and resilience by understanding Piggy’s need for his glasses and when being chased by Jack’s tribe he never gave up. When Ralph was hiding from the savages “Ralph was looking straight into the savage’s eyes. Don’t scream. You’ll get back” (Golding 199). Like Ralph a survivor must not be scared to fight back and gain confidence in hard times. With resilience one may recover and get back up from a tough situation giving them the strength to keep
