Emmanuel’s Dream is the true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a boy born in Ghana with a deformed leg. As a baby his father left, yet his mother had faith and believed her first borns deformity was not a curse. Growing up, Emmanuel’s mother carried him to school until he became too heavy for her and from that point on every day he hopped two miles to class by himself. Being the only child with disabilities was difficult, and initially none of his classmates would include him. Saving his money, Emmanuel bought something that no one else had, a brand new soccer ball and offered to share it if he could play as well. Disability does not mean inability. This is a phrase Emmanuel’s mother told him and one he holds onto through his challenges. It is also a phrase I think is important for children to hear and comprehend which is why I choose Emmanuel’s Dream as an addition to my classroom collection. Today, learning disabilities are on the rise, and it is highly likely that at least one child in my class will be diagnosed with one. Despite having learning or physical disabilities, the courage and determination Emmanual shows throughout his story goes to show that a person can succeed even with a handicap. This is a lesson I think is critical to the education of those with and without a disability. There are many different challenges and obstacle those who have disabilities have to overcome and in addition to a great lesson about overcoming life obstacles, this book would generate a necessary discussion about the treatment of disabled people. For all these reasons and many more, Emmanuel’s Dream is a fantastic addition to a classroom or a home
