I found your post interesting, having worked in an emergency department during my paramedic years. In my career as a nurse working in a clinic on occasion we must send a patient to the emergency department. I always call to speak with the charge nurse to provide report prior to just sending the patient, often I am on hold for greater than 15 minutes. This often results in the patient arriving at the ER before I can give report. Adding to this the charge nurse on more than one occasion is calling me on another line to ask why the patient it there! However, from past experience I do know how busy the ER can be at any given time.
"Get me the police". Prior to the rotary dial many people all over the country had to wait for operator assistance when placing a phone call. Creating an emergency number was a sufficient way of connecting to an emergency personnel’s. Before the emergency number was established the caller dependency for an emergency contact was the operator. The caller would have to wait for assistance and then tell the operator the number of whom they wish to be connected to. In case of emergency the caller could simply reply with the emergency service name and get help. In 1967, the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice suggested that a "particular number be established" generally for exposure of emergency situations. As a result of the colossal attention in this concern the President's Commission on Civil Disorders turned to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a clarification. In November of 1967 FCC met with the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) to find a way of establishing a universal emergency number that may possibly be implemented promptly. Later congress passed a law identifying 9-1-1 to be the standard emergency contact number for the United States of America. By the end of the 20th century nearly 93% of the U.S was covered with some type of 9-1-1 service. So, whenever there are an emergency occurring citizen’ young and old have access to the universal emergency number. This is a telephone number to be used for immediate access to help and assistance when an accident or serious problem occurs. Children can be taught to dial 9-1-1 when life and/or property are in immediate danger. In addition to, being in danger it defeats the purpose of having an emergency number.
With the emergence of urgent care clinics, consumers now have another option when it comes time to receiving medical treatment. Often an illness arises during times when a person’s doctor is not available, such as at night or on weekends. This is when urgent care clinics can help.
The goals include increasing nurses’ awareness of their roles and responsibilities in preparing for and responding to a disaster. There are web-based courses available for professionals who are not necessarily planning to deploy to a disaster site but working in hospitals, schools or long-term care settings. These individuals could help with the long-range planning of patients involved in a disaster. The course is designed to protect the nurse and the public through the use of universal precautions, protective equipment, evidence collection and isolation precautions. These are areas that the emergency nurse may not consider when volunteering on the front line of a disaster (Stokowski, 2012). Other areas of the course include how to prepare for a disaster, who to notify when an event is unfolding, the assessment, diagnosing and treating of injuries and illnesses, incorporating clinical judgment skills, and supporting the community after the disaster (Orr,
Alternatively if a call were to come in via text message, dispatchers would have to read the incoming text message, respond by text message, and then compile a report relaying the needed information to the responders. Plus, as Bleiberg and West (2014) mentioned, the call taking process is slower, sometimes there are critical questions that require urgent answers, but with text messaging there is a delay in the response compared to a live voice phone call. Once pictures and videos come into play there will be even more responsibility in getting those images out to the responders while still filling out the report and talking or texting with the caller. The new technology adds more layers that dispatchers will have to adapt and adjust to. In order to help with this concern, we would ask for public education with an emphasis on the importance of using voice calls whenever possible and text, picture, or video only in those extremely rare instances when those forms of communication are only
In a perfect world, violence, plane crashes floods and other disasters would not occur. Disease and illness would be non-existent. Emergency medical services would not have a basis for fruition. Unfortunately, the world is not perfect place. EMT's and other EMS workers are vital to all societies globally. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the definition of an emergency services is, " Emergency services are those health care services provided to evaluate and treat medical conditions of recent onset and severity that would lead a prudent layperson, possessing an average knowledge of medicine and health, to believe that urgent and/ or unscheduled medical care is required." The following pages will illustrate the struggles of an emergency medical technician and other emergency medical service workers.
A., Pomerleau, S. G., & Penner, J. L., “Knowing is a process of perceiving and understanding the Self and the world”. Nurses as caregivers must appreciate each patient for who they are as individuals. The nurse must also know how to provide nursing care with the knowledge he/she gains from experience in the field. Caring is the main component needed for a nurse to give quality care to a patient. The nurse must assess the needs of a patient and direct the patient plan of care around the patient’s ability to engage in his/her own rehabilitation. Nurses must create a genuine relationship with the patient in order to determine how much their patient is willing to participate in their care. Nurses have always used their visual instincts in patient care. There has always been a face to face where the patient is physically in front the nurse. Telenursing is different because nurses no longer can rely on face to face interaction with their patients. In order to facilitate care over the phone nurses need to know their patient to provide individual care and ensure the safety of the patient with the nurses’ judgment. Not only can phone conversations be taken out of context so can emails and text messages. The nurse must have a strong bond with their patients so this type of complication will not occur. Another problem when using any form of communication that is not face to face is that it is not always possible to express empathy or build a sense of unity. Patients need to feel that the person on the other end cares. The tone a person takes on the phone can either make or break a relationship. In some conditions telenursing is not always appropriate, for instance a patient who is suffering from a deadly condition. Telephone and computers cannot provide compassion like a real person. In the end telenursing is a valuable service to patients but it is not

...inding the suited vehicle which is the closest to the emergency. The vehicle number will be logged and informed of the emergency. Along with the patient information and incident to expect sent to the vehicle, the GPS will provide directions from the current location to the patient and quickest path back to the hospital. The GPS will give the hospital personnel an idea of how long it will take the vehicle to get to the hospital and have equipment, room, and personnel ready to help the patient. By taking the quickest path, along with medical personnel being ready for receiving the patient, could mean the difference of life and death depending on the incident.
In emergency situations, the first step in developing a telepsychiatry service is to assess availability of resources to deal with psychiatric emergencies at the patient sites, including health services (outpatient, inpatient, police, other), and the parties’ expertise in handling such emergency psychiatric situation (Shore, Hilty, & Yellowlees, 2007).
Marriage rights are always something that I have found very interesting, as most cultures differ extremely from what we see in our modern Western culture. In today’s world, women who live in a Westernized society have the same rights in their marriage as their husbands do, especially when it comes to situations such as divorce, custody, and the ownership of property. This is completely different to what a marriage looked like in Ancient Greece. One thing that’s especially interesting to me is what rights a woman has in her marriage (what rights she had in terms of property, divorce, custody of her children, etc.).
Many small size hotels shut their front offices over the night and they mostly leave emergency contact numbers that can be used by guests in the hotel or arriving guests in case of problems or in need of services.
