Embarkation of the Pilgrims I chose to write about a painting. It is Embarkation of the Pilgrims by American artist Robert W. Weir in 1843. It is oil on canvas and the size is 12’ by 18’. It is about people who seek for religious freedom. The painting takes place on the desk of a ship, gathering for a prayer. There are men, women, and children pictured in this painting. Everything is laid out asymmetrically. People in the painting look in different directions, has different facial emotions, and body gestures. The focal point of this composition is the armor, musket, and the helmet is the primary objects. They lie in the foreground beside a screw and a man holding the Bible and looking up to the sky surrounded by people. The color of the sky and rainbow is warm and bright, driving the feeling of relaxation and the appearance of natural beauty. There are also men and women pledging to the man that is holding the book. This was a small place that attracted a broad and diverse group of people (vice presidents to beer truck drivers with a few con men and mobsters thrown in). Observing these varied characters triggered an early interest in human nature and art in the face and human form. He was educated formally as an engineer. His work career started in process design and later in management. He took early retirement from a major oil company to pursue his interest in art. He studied art at the Art Students League in New York City, the Art League in Houston, and the Glassell School of Art also in Houston. The painting, Embarkation of the Pilgrims (1843) is considered to be Robert Weir’s (1803-1889) most famous work. It depicts the Pilgrims on the deck of the ship Speedwell on July 22, 1620 before they departed from Delfs Haven, Holland for North America, where they sought religious freedom (Architect of the Capitol website). This journey must have been one of the many that populated the new land in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The message in the painting portrays fear, hope, and new beginnings. In the painting, the people are in prayer and looking upward. This makes me believe that they were entrusting God with whatever was next for them, or wherever their path was taking them. The article paired with the painting points out the city on the right side that the Pilgrims are leaving. This city is the Pilgrims’ home; it was all they knew. The fact that is included in the picture could show that the Pilgrims feared the change, or represent the significance of the change. The fear of such a big move could explain the armor that was included in the painting. The Pilgrims had a need for protection from the unknown in the New World they were journeying to. The rainbow in the picture depicts their faith in God and His promise. They were leaving everything behind in search of religious freedom. Though they were in never ending prayer with a strong need of protection, their faith needed to be strong in order to actually go through with the journey. Other aspects are the actions of people praying and looking toward the sky, which takes up most of the composition. The painting is very bright and colorful. Different colors were made by blending colors right on the canvas. These techniques combine to make this painting a vivid image of nature. Some parts are bright and some are subdued. Many people are demonstrated in traditional attire while others wear more bright and extravagant costumes. On the left side of the painting, there is a display of a rainbow behind the ship and open sky, which makes the left side of the painting brighter. Also the painter used the shadow to show the realism and to connect to the back of the painting, where it is darker than the front of the picture. It also leads the viewer’s eyes around the picture. Robert Weir used horizontal and vertical lines in combination to make the painting more solid and stable. People are demonstrated in a horizontal line as an important aspect of the painting. The illusion of space is accomplished through objectivity drawing techniques and casts of shadows. Left side and the right side of the painting reflect each other, but at the same time it has opposite themes and mood. Mood of the painting is peaceful. People are calm, in anticipation of a miracle. The picture is divided in three levels. A couple of people demonstrated in the foreground as a beginning of the picture which leads our eyes to the second level with a few more people with important action. Then, in its background of the painting which is full of important elements such as people praying, a rainbow, and the city. This painting has several oranges and red discoloration, meanwhile the most of the painting is made in traditional and calm blush.
The artist uses different colors and brightness to describe different mood. The brushwork is amazingly done. He used short strokes, cross weaves, and wave very thinly. The painting in whole is full of effects and historical moods, religious symbols such as a bible, logo on the top “God with us”. The embarkation of the pilgrims is a famous elaboration of Robert Weir; the painting clearly depicts the way of the Mayflower followed by the pilgrims. The very similar view was also defined by an artist Samuel F.B. Morse. The painting has been repaired, and restored various times. In addition, the painting was completely damaged due to the falling of a beam while a construction project. The art department asked Robert Weir to repair the painting accordingly. restored. This well-known painting can be found on the reverse of the United States $10,000 bill. In the romantic mode of 19th century history painting, the artist has employed symbolism, sentimentality, and theatrical devices for his effect. Arms and armor, for use against the dangers of the New World, lie in the foreground beside a screw that later saved the Mayflower from disaster in a storm at sea. The Mayflower and the Pilgrims' New World, by Nathaniel Philbrick (winner of the Massachusetts Book Award) is a captivating historical novel that explores the account of the Pilgrims and their involvement in the New World. It is a story of the Puritans (who would later become the Pilgrims), as they travel to the New World, a place they can hope to worship their God in the way they want to without any persecution and/or animosity from their fellow man since no European nation was safe for them. While reading Philbrick’s novel I (and most likely many other readers), compared the historical text in The Mayflower to how we personally see the world today. Furthermore, I learned from the text of The Mayflower, my views were challenged within the confines of the text, and though it might not address my problems on a personal level—it still addresses things that are considered important to not just me, but people around the world.
I found The Raising of Lazarus and Annunciation to be interesting pieces on their own as well as to be compared. At face value, these paintings do not appear to contain many contrasting features. However, by examining these paintings closely, one can conclude that paintings with similar themes, mediums, and time periods can still differ in countless ways. Light, medium, subject, color, space, and viewpoint are just a few of the characteristics that can be considered when analyzing Wtewael and Caliari’s works. It is imperative that observers of art take a deeper look into the different features of artwork in attempt to uncover the intentions of the artist.
Rituals are held as a very important part of any society, including ours. They go back to ancient times or can be as simple as maintaining one’s hygiene. Non-western societies have rituals that may seem very foreign to us, but they have been engrained in their communities and are essential to their social structure. This interpretation will focus on the Great Pilgrimage, a ritual performed by Quechuan communities. We will be looking specifically at a community in the area of Sonqo.

I chose to write about the artwork titled “Mule Deer Still Life” by Angela Prond. The artwork is oil on a canvas board. The artwork is a picture of a mule deer skull with its horns still attached. This picture reminds me of hunting, because I do a lot of it and I have shot mule deer before and saved their horns exactly like this picture is. Angela’s title for the artwork makes me believe that she is saying this mule deer still has life and meaning. There is not a lot of background in this artwork, pretty much just the mule deer skull and horns. She did this for a reason, even though the picture is pretty normal and there is not much detail to it, there is more meaning in her title for the picture.
We walked and walked looking at each art piece, which were all well displayed. Then as I looked at the back wall, a large oil canvas painting looked right back at me. Settling into the “New World” was a burden on not only the Pilgrims, but on the adapting Natives as well. In “The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World,” Nathaniel Philbrick writes about much of the Pilgrims history arguing that the basic story does not illustrate the complexity of the relationship between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. Although, the Pilgrims struggled in the beginning, much of the burden was lifted by the help of the Natives. However, the breaking of the alliance, that aided the Pilgrims in their first years, causes me to point fingers towards the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims’ disrespectful, threatening, and harsh manner puts them to blame for the break down on the good relations between the Natives and the Pilgrims.
The act of pilgrimage is scared to the devoted followers of any faith as it requires a commitment to religious obligations and the utmost sacrifice to an unseen deity. As one takes part in a religious journey, he or she renounces worldly obligations in efforts to fulfill the greatest form of piety.
The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.
During my trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario, I found there to be one painting that surely stood out and made an unique impression on me, it was certainly a painting unlike the rest of the in the gallery. When my eyes met those of the portrait of Dr. Heinrich by Otto Dix, I was deeply intrigued and found myself to be drawn to the piece and inspecting it the longest out of the all the options of paintings that I saw at the AGO.
In the poem, The Runaway Slave at Pilgrims Point by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Browning based the poem on past experience due to the fact her family had owned slaves in Jamaica for several generations. Once these slaves were set free in 1833; sixteen years later abolitionist repudiated the “ unjust- power of the white slave owners.” ( Stephenson, 43). With Browning rejection of her once slave owning father’s irrational authority to refuse his children to marry and leave home, this poem empowered the rage she had suppressed by years.

John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical story about the Christian religion. It allegorizes the journey of a Christian into "the Celestial City, which represents heaven. Although Pilgrim's Progress may seem simple and straightforward, there are many deeper meanings throughout the whole story. Bunyan uses the names of his characters to signify whom the character represents in the story, for example, the character Hopeful represents hopefulness, Help represents people who are willing to help others in need of assistance, Faithful represents people who are faithful to whatever they are associated with, and the main character, Christian, represents all young Christians in the world. His journey to the Celestial City is a journey every Christian must face in their lifetime before allowed into heaven. Within his journey there are many obstacles such as temptations both tangible and intangible for instance, the merchandises sold at Vanity Fair and the shortcuts offered, illustrate temptations real Christians must face and overcome; finding an easy way into heaven, and being thrown off course by material things. The character Christian overcomes many obstacles before reaching his destination, the Celestial City. But during his journey he does not face all these obstacles alone. He meets a variety of people all through his journey to the Celestial City; some of these people mock his traveling to the Celestial City, some decide to follow him, and some help him along his way. The author of The Pilgrim's Progress is well described by Coleridge's remark: "His piety was baffled by his genius; and Bunyan the dreamer overcame the Bunyan of the conventicle." This remark points out the difficulty that Bunyan faces when he attempts to write a religious piece of work in the style of allegory. The Pilgrim's Progress is "pious" because it is a piece written in dedication to God. It contains important religious teachings -- what a good Christian should do and what he should not do. What Coleridge means by Bunyan's "genius" is basically the story itself. The story is so well written that people become so interested in the story and forget the whole spiritual truth behind and this worry Bunyan. Coleridge also indicates in his remarks, the tension between "piety" and "dreaming". "Dreaming", as we know is unreal, and it can hardly be connected with "piety". But Bunyan, through his "genius", not only managed to bring these two things together, but in way that would be satisfiable to all.
