Elijah Scott is a nineteen-year-old, Caucasian, male, from a First-Class family from New York City. He is currently attending Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and is in his first semester of his Sophomore year. Elijah is currently a Biology and Pre-Medicine student. After completing his first year of college, his GPA came out to be 2.75. With the results from his GPA he has been debating about switching his major to education. He thinks he would be happy and love to be a teacher, but he feels like if he switched his major, he would let his parents down, even though they expressed to him that even though they would like for him to be a doctor, they will support him with switching his major. Elijah parents are both doctors in New York, …show more content…
which had influenced him to major in Biology and Pre-Medicine. His presenting issues are dissatisfaction, scared, confused with various areas of his life. He also feels like he might be potentially seen as a failure. To express her feelings with her college decisions, she decided to go to his academic counselor, Dr. Paul Lee, at his institution. This is the beginning of Elijah’s second session with his counselor. The last session Dr. Lee discussed being unhappy with his major and the things he fears with switching his major to education. Dr. Lee also, gave Elijah information about majoring in education and an assignment where he had to write out the pros and cons of switching his major. Dr. Lee hope that this assignment will allow him to analyze his decisions. In this counseling session, Dr.
Lee decided to use a person-centered approach with Elijah because he believes that he has the resources to make decisions in his life. Before every counseling session, Dr. Lee greets Elijah with a handshake, smile, and a snack. In this second session, told Elijah that he believes that he will conclude about his major. Dr. Lee in these counseling sessions allow Elijah to talk through his feelings and explaining how his choices will affect his future. When Elijah talks, Dr. Lee is engaged to everything that he is expressing and would nod his head every now and then. Dr. Lee tell Elijah from their interaction, he can see a sense of regret even though he wants to be happy. Elijah admits that the assignment had helped him a lot. When Dr. Lee asked him to explain, he said, “Halfway while during the assignment I wanted to add more cons to the list to outbid the pros, even though he want to change his major.” This represents the unconditional positive regards. Dr. Lee reassured Elijah that he is glad that he shared that information and understand why he wanted to outbid the pros. Dr. Lee told him that change can be scary and sometimes we should change to make ourselves happy. “I can see how having both parents as doctors can impact your feeling,” Dr. Lee said. Dr. Lee genuinely decided to share his college experience about struggling to find a major. Revealing this story made Elijah more comfortable with switching his major. During revealing his
story, Dr. Lee showed empathy. Later in the session, Dr. Lee had thanked Elijah for doing the assignment and believed that he will do what is right for him. Dr. Lee told Elijah that he will always be there for him and if he is busy, he will find time. Dr. Lee acknowledging Elijah is an example of congruence. Elijah left the session feeling relieved and ready to make his college decision.

Every year there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry another year. Finally, the point comes a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.
Dan Lee is a 24-year-old pre-med student, who is visiting the university counseling center because of challenges he is facing related to his acceptance to medical school. Some of the issues are emotional and some involve conflicts with loved ones. I will expand more upon this case in the pages to follow.
The case study on Kevin Miller is very challenging. Kevin Miller is White 5th grade student, and his parent are very supportive. Kevin has a problem with attention span; consequently, he I has been identified as a candidate for Greentree Elementary School Gifted and Talented Program. In the Dred Scott case, serious constitutional questions were raised when the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that Scott and other slaves were not considered citizens, because the constitution gave the right of citizenship only to members of the white race. This “bombshell” decision galvanize opposition to slavery among northerners who were outraged that Mr. Scott could not sue in court for his freedom. Though Mr. Scott claimed that because he had lived as a resident of a free state he was considered a free man, the U. S. Supreme Court declared that the federal government did not have the power to prohibit slavery in federal territories. Therefore the Supreme Court’s “threatening and immoral” ruling in this case annulled the Missouri Compromise, a Congressional act passed in 1820 that allowed Missouri to be admitted as a slave state, while prohibiting slavery in the Louisiana Purchase north of latitude 36°30′N. Furthermore, for northerners who opposed slavery and wanted it outlawed, this decision implied that slavery could openly and freely move into the north. Outraged filled the

As students and parents are looking into colleges, their minds need to be open and free of biases. Sanford Ungar’s essay can help broaden the mindset of families, and even help make a decision to attend a liberal arts college. Ungar uses various techniques in his essay that make it effective. Not only does he discredit the misperceptions of liberal arts, but he also approaches his writing with etiquette that appeals to his readers. In his essay, Ungar uses three main appeals: reason, emotion, and ethics...
Back in the 18th Century everything was moderate and things were not as advanced as they are today. Most people had to do things by hand or some did have machines, but they would still have to be use their hands to control it. But one man saw that all this can change while he was working one day. And he became famous for his invention and from that point on he changed the way machines were made.
...ment. The therapists would seek out all strengths they use to effectively deal with their life, while building upon their assets they already posses. The Hoovers may have “strengths and positive human qualities that are often unrecognized, unnamed, and unacknowledged, both in therapeutic and school settings” (Bernard, 1991). Teaching each individual techniques that identify strengths in themselves as well as using positive language to reframe how how they see their current circumstances will promote a more resilient perspective for the Hoovers. Also, an optimistic thinking style when life problems arise will increase the chances of a successful outcome. Richard Hoover shows that he is capable of this but anger and frustration impede further attainment of this techinique. The positive psychology approach would be usefull when working with each person, individually.
This segment was well received largely because this can be viewed as a universal concept. A highlight of the counseling session was seen in Gloria 's persistent attitude and her reluctancy to make her own decisions. Oftentimes in our human nature our decisions are derived from a combination of our values, morals, and standards. But sometimes we face situations when our values and the decisions that we are making are contradictory to one another (this is the dilemma that Gloria faced). What Dr. Rogers identified was the fact that we know what decision we want to make however we seek validation/acceptance from others. This what is known as prizing: seeking quality acceptance from others. As a result, we begin to contemplate and debate over every little decision in our lives therefore decreasing our confidence to make decisions on our own. Rogers practices enables his clients the ability to empower and uplift themselves in order to increase their self awareness. This is the type of influence that teachers, mentors, and parents can have over individuals by positive reassurance and not just telling people what to do. Gloria expressed to Dr. Rogers on several occasions that what she wanted was for him to tell her exactly what she should do; but instead he implemented counseling behaviors such as influencing her to be confident in her own
Academics has always been an important part of my life. Ever since I was a young child my parents have pushed me to lead good life academically. All throughout grade school I have had decent grades (generally speaking in the nineties or above), and I owe this, at least partly, to my parent's determination to give me the best possible education. I also owe this to my will to be at the top of my academic game. This was naturally quite easy for me up until my senior year of high school. When my senior year came around, there was a lot of pressure on me to make a lot of life changing decisions. When all of this was put on me, the last thing that i wanted to do was change the way i was living. I loved the way my life was, and going away from home to college wasn't something that i felt i was ready to do. Because of this i decided to enroll in Genesee Community College, which is about five minutes away from my house.
The stereotypical version of the normal life of a teenager proceeding to college would include high academic standards met throughout their high school career and outstanding outside testing scores resulting in automatic entry into the institution of their choice. Many of these individuals have the support of their accomplished family members in the form of financial support. There are those who have not had the luxuries of any easy upbringing but forced to decide between a life with a college degree or full-time employment. For myself I want to have it all and to achieve that I have taken on both.
I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college. The decision is totally up to me. There are many positives and negatives of attending college. Go over them, and then decide. I know myself better then anyone else, and I won’t let anyone else tell me what to do. I will make sure if I am going to attend college that I have something in mind that I will want to do, to succeed in. Choosing a major can be a very stressful situation so why not sit down and take some time to do it? Be creative, don’t rush, give yourself plenty of time and really think about what interests you in life. My major is something that I will want to enjoy, something that I will be doing for the rest of my life. Why would I want to be miserable at something I do in life? In two short essays: “College? What’s in It for me?” by Steven M. Richardson, and “What It Means to Be Creative”, by S.I. Hayakawa, I can relate to my major very well. Athletic Training is something that takes skill, as well as being creative in your own way. No two Athletic Trainers are the same. The more creative I am at whatever I do, the better off I will be. I hold the keys to all the doors that can ...
