What is your reaction when people stare or look at you in elevator? People normally avoid facing others when they are in elevator, and it has been a norm that most people follow. The reason of doing this project is to see people’s reaction when others are breaking the norm of riding elevator. By doing this project we developed three steps of observations in elevator, which were examining people who follow the norm without violation, being an observer and a violator to watch the rider’s reaction when the norm is violated. Also, we would discuss about two main parts of the norm violation such as the process during the violation and the personal difficulties of breaking the norm.
In the first step, my partner and I started observing the people whether they tail with the norm or not. The first person we witnessed was an Asian male. This man had a quick eye contact with me before he stepped into the elevator, and then he stared at the floor the whole time until he left. The second time we observed was an American male with his dog. The American started the conservation by the time when we had eye contact in elevator, but as soon as the conversation was over, he began staring at the door. In this experiment with my partner, we had observed four different types of people based on sex and race. According to our observation, even though the people are from different countries or in different sex, they still follow the norm, but in a different way. The Asian male and female tend to not facing other riders when they are in elevator; however, the American male and female are more likely to greet others with a smile, and then they would face the door. Tsai 4 project, my first thought was it would be interesting and new for me to select the norm of elevator. Also, this elevator norm project can be easily do in any situations as long as there are people ride elevator.
If I had selected a different norm, I might not have the difficulties of observing the riders in elevator. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have chance to experience the norm of facing others that I don’t know. This project is not only solving my question in mind of the norm, but also I realize there are many norms that people or I follow and we don’t know about it. Moreover, this project has changed the way I look things around me, and now I see things whether they are big or small; I see them with a deeper and clear perspective.
Nonverbal behavior is channeled by norms and most of us abide by them without being aware of them. Physical appearance, gesture and body movement, face and eye behavior, vocal behavior, personal space, touch, scent/smell, and time are all forms of nonverbal communication behavior. Norms differ amongst various cultures, ethnic, and geographic groups. There are endless ways and forms to violate nonverbal norms, and by doing so can lead to a barrier in communication, which are problematic to distinguish.
Bystander inaction is more influenced by the bystander’s response to other observers. The experimenters hoped to inform people of the situational forces that affect people’s behaviors in emergency situations in order to help people overcome forces that result in inaction.
Communication is everywhere. We, as interactive human beings, spend the majority of our time corresponding with others to satisfy our physical, identity, social, and practical needs (Adler, Rodman, & Sevigny, 2011). Often, this is consciously done; we search our minds for the accurate linguistic means to express our experiences, and use them to communicate with those around us. However, communication is not as straightforward and effortless as we may believe. It is, in fact, often unintentional, with 65% of it occurring as a result of non-verbal cues (Matsumoto, Shibata, Seiji, Mori, & Shioe, 2010). As mentioned by Marta Dynel (2011) in a study done on nonverbal communication, “Non verbal signs and signals ... are prevalent practically in all social encounters, which entail at least two individuals, who need not even talk or consciously interact otherwise”. Examples exist in all mediums, including in the animated film ‘Up’, where one scene depicts transactional communication between a male and female character, all expressed nonverbally . The nonverbal communication in this scene, along with various other communication constructs, will be discussed.

Smaller numbers increase the percentage of realization when it comes down to an emergency. The victim, if cohesive, actually plays a big role in causing the bystander effect as well. When a victim is unable to verbally communicate with bystanders, it lessens the chance of help. If a victim is capable of communicating, the help given could be more efficient. This is because it can help break the diffusion of responsibility. A victim looking a bystander directly in the eyes can even spark a quicker reaction in them. These are all ideas that psychologists still study today, and many even consider learning about this phenomenon a requirement.
There are many different things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are explicit rules that govern how we behave in our society. Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize, but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens our professor gave us an assignment that is really easy, but also difficult to do because we have to break a norm in from of people. The objective of my experiment was to observe how people reacted to a violation in the social norms of elevator etiquette. Generally in elevators, people fill in starting from the back, face the elevator doors, and rarely make verbal contact with others. Unless the passengers of the elevator know each other, conversation is sparse and often limited to small-talk. One big implicit social norm involves personal space. In our society it is implicitly know that you give people enough space when waiting in line or when sitting next to them as not to invade their personal bubble. I thought it would be particularly interesting to see what people did the moment you crossed that “bubble line.” Periodically throughout the day I would intrude upon people’s bubbles. For varied results, this occurred in classrooms, the elevator, the lunch line, the lunch table, and at work. During classes and at lunch I would move my chair really close to that of the person next to me. While in the lunch line and in the elevator I would stand really close to the person, even if there was plenty of space to spread out. At work, again I stood really close to the person when talking to them.
The Bystander effect can be described as the apathy to help others in distress situations. The higher the number of bystanders facing an emergency situation, the less likely are them to help. This is a demonstration of how others influenced the way we act in different situations.
