According to American School Counselor Association, since elementary is the time that children
start to develop a sense of themselves in the academic setting and learn confidence in academic abilities, it is important to have counselors specifically trained in handling the elementary aged students. Also during this time, they are learning how to interact with their peers, about character traits, and attitudes about social groups and elementary counselors can help them successfully navigate this sometimes tricky mine field. Elementary counseling involves counseling, consulting, coordinating and assessment services for students, parents and teachers. Counselors work with teachers collaboratively to help more successfully reach all students (Schmidt, 2014). Elementary counselors work with students to learn how to interact with each other socially by providing group counseling sessions and activities. It has been prove that the use of early intervention and identification strategies help to reduce the learning barriers for students in elementary classrooms, so to help this endeavor, elementary counselors conduct classroom observations to see if children qualify for special education and other assessments to determine the child’s eligibility. They also implement a counseling program to help teach students about themselves, working with others, and bullying. To accomplish these goals, counselors form relationships with parents and teachers to help facilitate their interactions with the students. Middle School Counselors Middle school counselors are the next line of support for the students in the academic world. These counselors help the students in their journey to becoming good citizens and leaders of the next generation. They are trained to help adolescents deal with difficult situations, both personally and developmentally, that can affect their academic success. During this time in their lives, adolescents explore various interests, learning how their school work applies to the real world, rapid changes in their growth and hormones, and figuring out their own identity and where they will fit in the world. Students are sensitive to what their peers think about them or say about them during these years and depend on their friends to give them acceptance and validation of their self-worth (American School Counselor Association). Middle school counselors are there to help the students develop appropriate coping skills when dealing with negative comments from their peers. With these skills, students can effectively handle difficult or stressful situations in a calmer fashion and gain a more accurate picture of their self worth. Handling these types of situation successfully helps students build their self-esteem and confidence. During this very emotional time, middle school counselor give students the ability to explore different careers and interests to help them find out what they might want to focus on while planning what to do with their futures. They also provide support to students by helping them plan for the future and giving them study and test taking skills that they can use to perform better in the classroom setting. Performing better in the classroom setting prepares them to do better in high school and also helps them build their self-esteem. I believe young people must be seen as full-fledged citizens of our world. Youth empowerment, the act of bringing out natural talents and energies in youth, is effective. Youth should be provided the supports and opportunities that enable them to increase individual self-worth and skills and have significant impact on services to communities, states, and the nation. Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
Children are our inspiration. They are the reason that educators today need to be more than sufficient in teaching, but remarkable at teaching. Children are little sponges that absorb knowledge quickly and abundantly and with guidance, can achieve great goals in their academic life. Children are the future. As teachers, we need to educate ourselves as much as possible so that we can better educate the future generations. “Piaget, working with children, found that the growth of their ideas is a process spread over years,” (Sawyer, 2003, p.6). Teachers, families and communities must support one another in learning and educating our young children. If we don’t spend the time necessary to learn and broaden our knowledge, our children suffer, our future suffers.
Chapters two, five and six focused mainly on the helping relationship and the core values, empathy, and probing and summarizing as helpful skills. These three chapters seemed to flow into each other nicely.
During early years of life, children undergo several developmental changes. Their logical reasoning, attention, perspectives, skills begin to develop. When children go to the elementary school, they begin to integrate knowledge from their interactions with parents and teachers in order to confront the academic challenge. Some children successfully achieve their academic goals; however, some children fail to meet this challenge, which can have a long-lasting negative impact on their success in the school context (Supplee al et., 2006). In order to be an effective counselor, one must remember to keep the client(s) in mind. The goal is to assist the client(s) in living the best life possible for that particular person or persons. With that being said, one cannot forget that they have their own set of morals, values, ideas, and the like. It is imperative to study counseling theories when beginning field based work. Counseling theories provide a foundation to be able to learn and develop my own techniques. Some ideas that exemplify the significance of counseling theories are; research, application of theories, and case studies.
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
