The simplicity of a rubber band and make it useful, flexible, easily accessible, but overall, the best part about an elastic band is that it defines society. People are more like an elastic band because they are flexible, and they can break easily. Many traits humans show is adaptability. Humans evolved from many stages through history like the homo erectus to the homo sapiens. An elastic band also can adapt to many situations whether someone are trying to hold something together, or someone is trying to slingshot it at you. One way of this happening is through yellow journalism. This is more like an elastic band because people are not able to evaluate history without humanness. One major player in yellow journalism is a cartoon titled The Spanish Brute. In the cartoon, a monkey like creature is holding a bloody knife with a torn up shirt while stepping on an american flag over a grave and having a belt labelled Spain. This cartoon is clearly biased so that people would hate spain as the cartoon shows many ways of disrespecting americans. One way of this is how the brute is stepping on the American flag and on a grave. This tells people that the Spanish enjoy killing us, as there are also many graves and a bloody knife, but also that they have no respect for us as we are, “The scum on the bottom of their shoes.” Hummaness was attached to this picture, and if someone today saw this, they would develop an opinion the the Spanish are monsters. The cartoon is like an elastic band because it can change so many people’s opinions, and they can be manipulated to think a certain way. Also, with many cartoons out in the world like this, it can sometimes break people and they do not know what to dom, and can make them confused and make them feel useless. This is just like how if you stretch a band too far it will break and become useless. Also, too much bias can be dangerous as seen in Sierra Leone. This is because children are kidnapped and taken to the army where they are told to listen to the rebels and fight for evil. The children are given drugs and are brainwashed only to go to war and fight a fight they cannot win either way. Susan Brewer brilliantly illustrates the historical facts of American government propagating violence. Scrutinizing the Philippine War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq War the reader discovers an eerily Orwellian government manipulating her citizens instead of educating them. Brewer states, a "propaganda campaign seeks to disguise a paradoxical message: war is not a time for citizens to have an informed debate and make up their own minds even as they fight in the name of freedom to do just that." pg. 7 The Presidents of the United States and their administrations use propaganda, generation, after generation to enter into foreign wars for profit by manipulating the truth, which it is unnecessary for our government to do to her people.
Imperialism began with Western European countries looking to expand their reach of influence on the East. These countries would conquer and colonize any region not of the West in hopes of bettering their economy or to help the native people they found in the East, carry up the “The White Man’s Burden.” When meeting the native people, Westerners named the things from the East “Orient,” and along with this name came many stereotypes and assumptions of the people and the land. Although, imperialism is no longer present, effects such as orientalism still resonates within the culture being expressed through media such as the Academy Award winning movie of the year Argo.
Lastly, we see that war as the crusade. When this being feeds to use from a young age, we learn how the enemy is. We also get this when there is a national tragedy like 9-11. The press then makes the public go on a crusade against the people that have caused this against us and we want to seek revenge.
Words and images were silent weapons used by all governments involved during World War II. Wars are generally fought between soldiers, but the different ideologies often meet on the battlefield as well. The support of the people is crucial during these times since general knowledge of strength relies on numbers. It has been generally acknowledged that the doctrine of proprietary estoppel has much in common with common intention constructive trusts, i.e. those that concern the acquisition of an equitable interest in another person’s land. In effect, the general aim is the recognition of real property rights informally created. The similarity between the two doctrines become clear in a variety of cases where the court rely on either of the two doctrines. To show the distinction between the doctrines, this essay will analyse the principles, roots and rationale of both doctrines. With reference to the relevant case law it will be possible to highlight the subtle differences between the doctrines in the cases where there seems to be some overlap. Three key cases where this issue surfaced were the following: Lloyds Bank Plc v. Rosset (1991), Yaxley v. Gotts (1999) and Stack v. Dowden (2007). This essay will describe the relevant judgements in these cases in order to show the differences between the two doctrines.
It seems necessary for this paper to start with some clarification of the terms associated with propaganda. Propaganda can be thought of as a foster parent for stereotypes. Propaganda is known to be the intentional manipulation of public opinion through hidden messages in advertisements and other media functions. Thus, propaganda uses many techniques to be able to deliver theses hidden messages to the public and influence their opinion. Fear, brainwashing, name calling, glittering generality, misinformation and much more are some of the techniques that propaganda uses to influence and manipulate the opinions of the majority. Propaganda finds the usefulness of stereotypes in the fact that it’s easy, fast and straight to the public. In the case of stereotypes about ethnic groups, Egyptians in this case are being portrayed as uneducated, unethical, ignorant, desert animal raisers, terrorists and uncivilized ethnic group. These name calling and misinformation techniques are what propagandists use to manoeuvre the society to portray Egyptians as humans of the underworld and Egypt as a deserted country that hunger and illness are its residents. The previous are all stereotypes that are propagandas of the media to convert such generality into truth and facts.
There are a multitude of understandings and interpretations of the concept culture. A common definition may be a, “cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving”(Hofstede). An explanation that may be used to discuss the culture of the Middle Ages. Furthermore, it may be used to examine the changes in key aspects, such as, religion, gender roles, and social norms during the time period of approximately the 500s to the 1500s.
Culture is a way of life that allows a diverse group of people to interrelate with one another. It is usually passed down from one generation to the next by communication and imitation. The term itself has a set definition, but it normally relates to the behavior, beliefs, values, and symbols that are accepted by a group of people. Culture can also be used to describe the time period and events in history. In the sense of what was deemed as popular during a specific stage in time and its impact on the culture surrounding it. Micro-historian have been dissecting and interpreting the meaning of popular culture and the courses of action that lead up to the events.
