The term Big Brother is used to refer to any ruler or government that invades the privacy of its citizens. When interning at a celebrity PR film it became evident that celebrity and the media are impacting and watching over all citizens. These constructs effect a tremendous amount of notions in our lives. Whether it be the latest election, culture, consumerism, unrealistic depictions, and a plethora of more constructs. We abide by these unwritten “laws” in order to fit the norms we see as normal. It is effecting the classroom and all aspects of the academic process. In “Effects of Social Media on College Students”, research explains how social media effects the day to day lives of college students. In the study, participants were given an anonymous questionnaire on the effects of social media and their college life. Many of the questions and answers alluded to negative aspects. Mainly in terms of academics, its tendencies to increase considerable distractions. Also, leaving reality to live to be absorbed in a virtual zone for hours of the day. A large analysis within the study was if college students check social media during class and when doing schoolwork. Results show “Ninety percent of students spent their time on entertainment; there were not too many college students who preferred using social media to deal with their homework. Eighty percent of the sample admitted that they posted or responded while completing homework” (Chen, Liang, Wang, 2011). Essentially, most college students prefer to use social media and in turn spend expansive hours checking these sites. Facebook tended to be the most popular used in and out of class. After reviewing the article,“The Epidemic of Media Multitasking While Learning” By Annie Murphy Paul, it can be concluded that the author believes that most students cannot learn or do any homework related assignments without the usage of social media.With believing that most students cannot focus long enough on an assignment without using social media it provides evidence behind the author’s theory. For the sake of privacy let's call her Maggie. Imagine not getting into college because of your social media account, an easy thing to prevent. This happened to Maggie who was getting into Bowdoin College in Brunswick. She didn't realize colleges look at your social media account until she tweeted harmful comments and could no longer attend the college (Singer). This is just one scenario of the 12% who get rejected every year because of their social media. Social networks were made to help keep people connected. Social networks provide people with access to entertainment, news, free advertising for business owners. These social platforms also provide users to communicate with family abroad. With all these benefits one would think that everyone would be happy with social networking but that’s not the case, in fact some people are against social networks. I think social networks are beneficial for everyone who might use this resource responsibly.
From "thintastic" blogs to suicide stories, social media has become not only a source of conversation but a gateway to harmful suggestions that many teenagers see and believe to be allowable, when in fact the situations proposed are dangerous to those who attempt them. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.

Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
However, the impact will be opposite for students who are addicted to social media. Firstly, they will reduce the time of study and the capabilities of learning or research as social media attract their attention more than study. Otherwise, it will also affect the score of their study meaning low grades.
