Injustice is prevalent in today’s society and it does not do any good for society. A marginalized group that is still being discriminated against and not being accepted widely is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, which is also known as the LGBT community. Many LGBT people have experienced some form of harassment or discrimination in the workforce. Society’s growth would not be hindered if it were not for social prejudice. First and foremost, statistics show that 15- 43% of gay people and 90% of transgender people face discrimination in the workforce (Burn, Kherley, 2011). Even in today’s society transgender and gay people live in fear of becoming homeless or being disowned by their families. If we had been accepted from the start then we would not have to face discrimination like this, it is better than what it was in the past however we continue having to fight for our rights. Another interesting subject is the rates of bullying of LGBT …show more content…
A study found that transgender women made up 72% of the victims of violent homicides. Another study found that 71% of LGB also known as lesbian, gay, and bisexual people had a crime committed towards them. Something else that is a problem is the refusal of service towards LGBT people. A recent case was in 2013 when the Sweet Cakes bakery refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. The women who were refused service took it to court because it was a violation of their rights. The bakery had also given out their personal information and they received death threats, luckily they won in court and the bakery was fined $135,000 for emotional distress. There are multiple stories similar to this one and there shouldn’t be, no one should be refused service if they aren’t harming anyone. As Dr. King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” No one should have to live in fear because of something they cannot choose to
People of LGBT community keep on facing numerous discrimination and hatred from our society throughout their life. Our society is often unknown and ignorant about the right of LGBT community, therefore, confused about how to respect or welcome them into our society. Because of our unfamiliarity and of lack of knowledge about this LGBT community, sometimes, our occasional effort to respect this community turns into a discriminatory statement towards that community. For instance, our president Donald J. Trump’s statement on LGBT society just points a finger on us of how much we actually know about this society when he states, “There can be no discrimination against gays. I’m against gay marriage”. It shows how confuse we are about the rights of LGBT society that even our president couldn’t make it clear whether he is against discrimination or against the equality of this particular society. There are several other instances when our view on this society as a monstrous one creates many societal discriminations. In many instances, LGBT couples don't offer to enjoy the societal advantages like any other opposite-sex married couples, and consequently, go through several societal discriminations and denied many societal rights and justices. Furthermore, in
Many times throughout our history, elected and future leaders will fight a war on poverty. Leaders like George W. Bush will run on his campaign trail saying, “The purpose of prosperity is to leave no one out-to leave no one behind”(2). His words were misleading to the public and the nation as a whole. The LGBT community was left out and left behind under his administration. “In fact, after controlling for a number of factors associated with poverty, rates for LGB adults are higher than for heterosexual adults.”(4). If receiving aid to be helped out of poverty, one had to meet a certain criteria, it should have been clearly stated in his speeches. His effectiveness of ending poverty cost the LGBT community their way of life.
While transgenders should not be able to use gender identified public facilities, they should not be bullied, or harassed in any kind of way because while they are transgender they are people. They breathe, they have feelings. That is why the government needs to put laws in place to help them, and make them part of our regular society, and to make them feel welcome. Looking back false transgender identification and accommodating to the public have been addressed. Those problems should be addressed but that does not mean that transgenders are to be made
Instead, we should try to walk in the shoes of a transgender person and see all of the things they fear on a daily basis. Nearly “63.4% of transgender students reported avoiding bathrooms” at their school (Transgender Students). These students should not have the be afraid to use the restroom at school. As people, they should have the right to do what makes them happy. I personally believe that myself nor does anyone else have the right to tell someone they can not do what makes them happy. As long as someone is not putting themselves or others in danger, then they should be able to do as they please.
Historically black gay males face intersecting forms of oppression. This oppression comes from all of society, but it also comes from within the black community. Some reasons for this could be the strong history of religion within the black community and the associations between identify as gay and femininity. This can amplify the struggles of those individuals because it leaves them feeling as if they do not have any solid foundation to lean on. This is problematic because those who fall into more than one minority group face oppressions from all of society, therefore having the support of your community can help individuals stay strong. When there is rejection within ones’ own community it can be hard on that person to express who they truly
Unfortunately, people that identify as transgender do not have the same rights as I do. A transgender person by definition is: “someone whose gender identity-that is, an individual’s internal sense of being male or female-does not align with his or her assigned sex” (Barry). Transgender people can get refused to seen by a doctor, just because they are transgender. A study of how transgender have been discriminated by medical providers was done and the study showed: “Nineteen percent had been refused treatment by a doctor or other provider because of their transgender or gender non-conforming status” (). Broken down by race, the ethnic group that was refused the most was: American Indian (36%), Multi-Racial (27%), Hispanic (22%), Black (19%), White (17%), Asian (15%) and then 19% (Total Sample). Not only can they be refused medical treatment, but doctors and medical professionals can be verbally abusive as well! “Over one quarter of respondents (28%) reported verbal harassment in a doctor’s office, emergency room or other medical setting and 2% of the respondents reported
According to the research done in the year 2013 found that most of the LGBT community members were highly mistreated badly by their bosses who discriminated them in respect to their sexuality transgender and sex personality (Gates, 2011). This act did not please LGBT community and made them to go streets campaigning to be given their job rights and be respected by their employers.. Another report which was done in the same year by the National Black Justice Coalition found that majority of the LGBT community group around 50% who are black Africans were highly discriminated and segregated at workplace. They were not given equal rights like the other Americans but instead got fired from jobs and sometimes undermined. Around 22 states have passed laws making work separation because of sexual introduction unlawful 19 likewise incorporate sex personality LGBT specialist’s still need government assurance (Gates, 2011). Poverty is also another ethical issue experienced by LGBT community. Research demonstrates that against LGBT segregation affects LGBT specialists' monetary prosperity, prompting high rates of joblessness, vagrancy, weakness and sustenance instability. Seat found that LGBT laborers will probably acquire less every year contrasted with the general U.S. populace. Furthermore, from the analysis done about discrimination of LGBT community in employment showed that that Transgender people
Florida’s, Texas’s and Kentucky’s new proposed bathroom laws have “caused fear and dismay among transgender people around the country” (Tannehill). Kentucky laws are more focused on the school systems but Florida 's and Texas’s laws treat transgenders as if they were criminals. Both of these states have regulations that will give transgenders civil and or criminal charges for using the bathroom they identify with (Tannehill). A transgender could be charged a fine for using the wrong bathroom and “people who report a transgender people in the bathroom to claim civil damages, for example a bounty” (Tannehill). Florida and Texas are trying to look out for the best interest of the majority population, however, “we all have to use the bathroom, but these laws would seemingly force transgender people to choose between fines and jail, risking horrific violence or leaving the state” (Tannehill). These laws have been seen as unreasonable to the transgender community and have been fought by the ACLU lawyer Joshua Block, “We’re talking about people who also have their sense of privacy and modesty, and who are not going to want to have everyone see an anatomical part of themselves that they feel should never have been there in the first place,” (Marcus). It has also been found that it’s illegal for employers to carry out such rules, “The Equal Employment
For one thing, transgender people may not seek treatment solely based on the fear and intimidation of medical staff misunderstanding them, in turn, ignoring their medical needs. “Historical stigmatization fosters a reluctance to disclose gender identity, which can have dire consequences for long-term outcome due to lack of appropriate medical history including transition-related care” (Roberts, 2014). This can have specific medical complication within itself which can lead to premature death. According to Roberts (2014), “Transgender patients face many barriers in their access to healthcare including both structural and financial barriers, and even a lack of healthcare provider experience in treating this unique
Have you ever had to defend yourself in a bathroom? Gay people get torched everyday for being gay. I think the transgender community should have the right to use the restroom of the gender they appear. Some people may argue that it would be a dangerous liability, but try walking a mile in the shoes of a person who is transgender.Young gay boys that are in middle school and high school are the first targets in the school systems. Gay boys get beat up by other students for being gay.
Over the past couple of months, states such as Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri have passed laws to discriminate against transgender people. These laws are outrageous because they relate to many other social justice issues that there have been in the past. Social issues such as discrimination against gender, race, age, and ability have been seen in the past and all have been rectified to full inclusion. With states passing discrimination laws, it just goes against what the United States is all about. The United States is a melting pot of all different types of people and it will continue to be that way forever. In order to keep going in the right direction, laws need to be enacted to include all people no matter
People that stay closeted with their sexual orientations often suffer at work, either too distracted by hiding their identity to focus or made extremely uncomfortable due to the assumptions by coworkers that they are heterosexual. On the other hand, those who come out are subjected to harassment, degradation, and overcompensation by coworkers to accept them, again making it hard to be a productive employee. Willis also notes that “coming out” is not a one time thing, as every stranger a queer person meets will assume them to be heterosexual. A queer person constantly drifts in and out of the closet, and this is more than enough to distract queer employees from doing their jobs efficiently. This is proof of the assumptions that straight people hold about queer inequality, and how inaccurate these assumptions are. Despite the common belief that an individual’s decision to stay closeted will help them gain inequality, the structural factor of heteronormativity leaves even closeted queer people worse off than straight
Transgender discrimination is growing problem. Statistics say that about 0.3% of the world's population is transgender, and that out of that 0.3%, about 41% of them have attempted suicide because of discrimination and being scared. Most transgenders have or will experience some sort of discrimination throughout their lifetime. Transgenders have been discriminated against daily for the past few years. They are being arrested and forced out of bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice, and many of them are now suing schools, police stations, and businesses for these discriminations.
When one hears the words “LGBT” and “Homosexuality” it often conjures up a mental picture of people fighting for their rights, which were unjustly taken away or even the social emergence of gay culture in the world in the1980s and the discovery of AIDS. However, many people do not know that the history of LGBT people stretches as far back in humanity’s history, and continues in this day and age. Nevertheless, the LGBT community today faces much discrimination and adversity. Many think the problem lies within society itself, and often enough that may be the case. Society holds preconceptions and prejudice of the LGBT community, though not always due to actual hatred of the LGBT community, but rather through lack of knowledge and poor media portrayal.
In North Carolina there are different ways that transgenders are being discriminated in the workforce. It starts off with companies who just do not hire transgender workers because they do not want to deal with all the problems. Some companies are afraid of hiring a transgender because they do not know how to handle situations that would occur. Having a transgender worker should not be a problem though, because they should be treated equality like everyone else. Approximately 67% small businesses in North Carolina still have not hired a transgender worker because they would not know how to react or handle it (EqualityNC). According to various sources a well-known company recently had a case of a transgender worker being discriminated in North
