Cyberbullying Even though cyberbullying is done online, the effects of it are still very real. Cyberbullying has many negative effects such as have a negative reputation, use of alcohol, and suffering depression. Cyberbullying, unlike normal bullying, is done online and through social media. Cyberbullying is defined as “when somebody repeatedly harasses, mistreats, or makes fun of another person online or while on cell phones or any other electronic device. (Patchin, 2012). The main difference between cyberbullying and bullying is that cyberbullying can be done 24/7, anonymously, and you can be completely alone when it happens. According to research, somewhere between 10-50% of youth experience some form of electronic media harassment or cyberbullying. For example, if a cyberbully were to send a private picture of you or a private conversation you had, to somebody at school or work, your reputation would become very poor. People at your work or school would begin to name call you or think differently of you. This would lead to somebody not wanting to go back to school or work causing them to fail their classes or get fired from a job. Another negative effect of cyberbullying is that it puts somebody in the position to use alcohol or drugs. With somebody putting so much pressure on them, they are inclined to use things such as alcohol or drugs as a way to cope with their emotions. This can lead to things such as health problems, overdosing, or depression. Depression is one of the most common things to happen to someone when they are being cyberbullied. Cyberbullying can easily drop someone’s self-esteem, by having somebody call them fat or a freak.
