Coal mining came along long before the industrial revolution had even commenced, it was an easy and well paid job until the coal, was pushed further down into the ground.

The children’s rights were minimal; they worked long hours, for minimal money, to supply for them and their family. The work hours would range between 10 and 19 hours depending on the gender, job and money earned. The children worked in horrible conditions; they worked near large, heavy and dangerous equipment, like machines, large trucks and were made to put their hands into tiny spaces to fix the machines. In a coal mine in central Britain it was recorded that, 58 deaths out of a total of 349 deaths in one year were 13 and under. Life for all those who worked underground was very hard, expessally for the young children who worked in the mines.
Health issues during the industrial revolution was a major problem especially in the mining industry. Employers forced young children into labour demanding jobs that caused physic and phycholgic pain, an example of these jobs was coal mining, being a trapper was horrifying, children would have to sit underground in tiny passageways for hours on end, the air was thin, and there was nowhere to move. The Parliament tried to change these conditions through the Factory act of 1833. This act restricted the starting age limit of child workers to have to be at least nine years old to work. It also put restricted hours on child labor. Kids from nine though twelve were only allowed to work eight hours per day. From ages thirteen through seventeen they were allowed to work up to twelve hours per day. Mining conditions were even worse than factory conditions. People were constantly getting diseases and dying from working in mines all day long. To change this, they came up with the Mine Act of 1842. This stopped woman and children from working in the mines. They also put a ten-hour work limit which limited the work day for people who worked in the mine with the Ten Hour act of 1847. The kids under the age of fourteen were sent to go assist with the textile workers. They then would beat and verbally abuse the child. And if children would show up late, they would be weighted. Weighted means to put a very heavy weight on the child's back and have them walk up and down the factory aisles for hours, so other children can learn from it. Many of the adult labor force had no training in how to use the machines and took awhile to pick up the new techniques (Basu and Van, 1998). It was more time consuming and costly to teach the adults than it was to hire children during this start of the revolution. Children could be molded into the ideal adult worker as they rose through the ranks in the factory. Studies indicate that about 50% of workers started working in the factories when they were less then ten years of age, from this overall amount 28% of these child workers started working when they were under the age of fourteen, while only 7.8% of workers started working in the textiles from the age of twenty- one or higher (Nardinelli, 1980). The aging of the generation of child factory workers improved the quality of adult factory workers and created a reserve pool of adults with factory experience. This pool of adults was particularly significant for men. As a child worker, they were exposed to many different positions and so learned a great deal amount of experience. Not only were the children fulfilling the basic factory needs but were creating a more work experienced labor force for the future. No longer where adults having to learn how to use machinery when entering the factory market but instead had worked in a textile during their childhood so had already obtained the human capital needed to work. The factory would then profit off of this future human capital and so keep on employing the massive amount of children in order to better themselves for the future while at the same time reaping the present value of cheap labor. From the late 18th century to the mid 19th century, the economy in England was transformed from an agricultural to a manufacturing –based economy. In 1801, agriculture provided employment for 36% of the British population. By 1851, only 10% of the British population was employed in agriculture, while over 40% was employed in industry (Hopkins, 36). As a direct result of this transformation, a surplus of jobs were created and displaced farming families moved in to fill them. Factory and Mine owners exploited the situation by offering families a means to make more money, by putting their children to work. Industry profited from this arrangement by saving money, since child labor was more “cost effective”. According to one historian, Clark Nardinelli, “in 1835 56,000 children under the age of thirteen were working in textile factories alone. By 1874, the number of child laborers in the market hit its peak with over 122,000 children between the ages of 10 and thirteen working in textile factories (4).”
Imagine waking up at five in the morning to walk over a mile to a factory where you work until noon where you get a half hour break for lunch, then it’s back to work until nine or ten at night, when you are finally allowed to go home and you are only eight years old. Today that seems unimaginable, but during the early 19th century it was the everyday life of thousands of children whose ages range from as young as five until you died. The Industrial Revolution restructured the employer-employee relationship into an impersonal association exhibited by indifference to the quality of life of the worker. Children were especially exploited because they could be hired for lower wages and were made to work equally long days (Miller). Around the 1830s, children constituted about one-third of the labor in New England (Illinois Labor History Society). The conditions of workers as a whole necessitated action on behalf of the rights of laborers.
Many states were involved and enacted laws by the 1920s. Overall 36 states set laws against children, under the age of 16, working in factories at night or over eight hours. As a result, a lot people began to see the negative sides of child labor and advocated for children. More kids went to school for free and worked until they were 16.
