Memory is a complex system that has many functions. It is simply defined as being able to store and use information (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). According to the three-stage model of memory, there are three classifications of memory: sensory, short-term, and long-term (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1971). Sensory memory is the information we collect from using our senses and lasts from less to half a second to two to three seconds; this step is the first in creating a long term memory (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). In a simple test testing iconic memory, visual memory, four digits were flashed for 30 milliseconds (Thompson & Madigan, 2005). There are two types of long-term memory: implicit, or nondeclarative, and explicit, or declarative. Implicit memory is the knowledge one creates by experiences and includes priming and procedural memory, such as riding a bike (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). Allen, David & Lewis (1999) define it as a kind of “habit memory.” Feist & Rosenberg (2012) describe it as one knows how to do something well, but when ask how one does it, they cannot explain clearly. The other form of long-term memory is explicit memory. This is the kind of memory in which one makes a conscious effort to bring up a piece of information (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). If one does not pay enough attention to what is being learned or is trying to multitask while encoding, the information that is being encoded will not be done so correctly (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). McNally (2007) wrote in his article that this process gone awry could be a reason why psychologists misdiagnose DA. He states that just because one cannot remember an important aspect of an emotional event does not mean that one has dissociative amnesia. He argues that during an emotional situation, it is difficult to know whether or not the person encoded all the situation completely. An example he give is that if a person is being robbed by gunpoint, that person may not remember the attacker’s face because they were so focused on the gun. There are then two kinds of encoding processes: automatic and effortful (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). These are mostly as their names imply. Automatic requires little conscious effort, while effortful requires work (Feist & Rosenberg, 2012). An example for automatic is what clothes one wore the day before; an example for effortful would be going over states and capitals to learn them. Finally, the MSM model of memory states that all information is stored in the long term memory, however, this interpretation contrasts with that of Baddeley (1974) who argue that we store different types of memories and it is unlikely that they occur only in the LTM store. Additionally, other theories have recognised different types of memories that we experience, therefore it is debatable that all these different memories occur only in the long-term memory as presumed by the multi-store model which states the long term memory store as with unlimited capacity, in addition it also fails to explain how we recall information.
Explicit memory is memory that we can recall consciously with our minds. Explicit memories are stored permanently in the neocortex after being processed by the hippocampus. These memories are divided in two different subcategories: Semantic Memory and Episodic Memory. Semantic memory can be described as universal knowledge. This can span from knowing the colors of fruits to knowing facts about animals. Episodic memories can be described as firsthand experiences. This can be anything from your first car or your wedding.
Human memory is flexible and prone to suggestion. “Human memory, while remarkable in many ways, does not operate like a video camera” (Walker, 2013). In fact, human memory is quite the opposite of a video camera; it can be greatly influenced and even often distorted by interactions with its surroundings (Walker, 2013). Memory is separated into three different phases. The first phase is acquisition, which is when information is first entered into memory or the perception of an event (Samaha, 2011). The next phase is retention. Retention is the process of storing information during the period of time between the event and the recollection of a piece of information from that event (Samaha, 2011). The last stage is retrieval. Retrieval is recalling stored information about an event with the purpose of making an identification of a person in that event (Samaha, 2011).

This essay addresses the working memory model which was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch (1974 in Smith & Kosslyn, 2007) as a response to Atkinson and Shiffrins (1968 in Smith, 2007) multi-store model. According to Baddely and Hitch the multi-store model failed to explain most of the complexities of the human memory and viewed it as being too simplistic. They argued that the short term memory store must have more components rather it being a single inflexible store as suggested previously by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). The working memory model is therefore an enhancement of the multi store model. According to Baddeley and Hitch working memory is a limited- capacity system that stores and processes information.
The modal model of memory is one of the most basic models that describes memory today. It involves the three stages named sensory memory, short-term memory, and Long-term memory and how each stage transfers information from one to another (Hockenbury & Hockenbury, 2012). Healy and McNamara (1996) explained how the original modal model of memory, developed in 1890, consisted of only the primary and secondary memory. The primary memory was defined as, “…that which is held momentarily in consciousness…” and the secondary memory was defined to be, “…unconscious but permanent [memory].” As time progressed, the primary memory was then referred to as “short-term memory” while the secondary memory started to be called “Long-term memory”. In 1968, Atkinson and Shiffrin added what is now called “sensory memory” to the list, which consists of sensory registers for sight, sound and even touch. This new modal model of memory that is currently used also explains the transitions between short and Long-term memory.

The human brain consists of many subsystems within the long-term memory. One of which is episodic memory. Episodic Memory is the remembrance of a phenomenal personal experience in terms of what, when, and where. This memory begins by retrieving information such as, words, objects, or faces; using this knowledge the episodic memory finds links and slowly transitions into recalling the complete memoir.
In daily life, memory is used all the time. When we go to buy things, we would remember the list of items what we are going to buy. At school, we would also need to have revision in order to remember the materials for examination. Or even, when we meet friends, we would also need to recall their names. Thus it is important to know and understand how we remember such things so that we can effectively recall them when necessary. Obviously, we do not need to remember the exact position or order of things in daily life. We would have our own pattern for remember and retrieve information (Ashcraft, 2010). This is named as free recall, which items recalled in any order (Francis, Neath, MacKewn and Goldthwaite, 2004). However, many researchers found that the probability of recalling items (such as words, letters, or numbers) does in fact depend on the items position in a list. The most striking finding is that words at the beginning and end of the list are often easier to recall than those words in the middle of the list. Thus, when the results of a free recall experiment are plotted on a graph; a u-shaped serial position curve can be obtained. This is often referred to as the serial position effect that is affecting our memory (Smith, n.d.).
The human body is a complex structure. The brain being the most complex organ has the most work to do. The human memory consists of a process in which memories are stored and remembered. According to Intelegen Inc., there is this unique process of Memory in which the process only involves three stages. In the stages of this process, the memory is formed, retained, and retrieved. Highlighting this concept is the case of Susie Mckinnon, who lacks episodic memory. Though she lacks episodic memory, she does have intact semantic memory, which is another form of explicit long term memory. The WIRED article by Erika Hayasaki, reflects Mckinnon’s unique perspective and how she was able to become aware of her deficiency, as she was not uniquely aware something was wrong with her until high school and further research. By analyzing Mckinnon’s case in respect to the findings of Allen and Fortin, this allows one to understand why episodic memory is evolutionarily important for functionality and interactions in daily life.
Learning to tie shoes and ride a bike requires the encoding, storing, and retrieving of past observations of the procedure. With a lot of practice, children master these skills so well that they are able to remember them the rest of their lives. Memory is the storing of information over time. It is one of the most important concepts in learning; if things are not remembered, no learning can take place. As a process, memory refers to the "dynamic mechanism associated with the retention and retrieval of information about past experiences" (Sternberg 260). We use our memory about the past to help us understand the present. The study or memory in psychology is used in different ways, as well as there are many different ways to study how memory works in humans. In psychology there are many tasks used to measure memory, and different types of memory storages that human's use, such as sensory storing, or short term storing. There are also a lot of techniques that humans use to improve their memory, which they can use to learn, such as mnemonic devices. All these things can be classified as important issues in the study of human memory and ways of learning.
