Film director, Tim Burton, is very well-known for his darker twists on children’s stories. Specific cinematic techniques in movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice and Wonderland bring the idea that life isn’t a fairytale and bad things do happen, to life. We all have our own thoughts about the world, and children have the happier thoughts about it, but Tim Burton puts the thought in their heads that nothing is perfect and nobody lives “happily ever after” like they think it. Burton uses lighting, camera movements, and editing to contradict the standard fairytale ending.

It can make the scene feel happier and exciting, or it can go the opposite way and be scary. In Edward Scissorhands, angels are used to make the character seem more powerful or innocent, this is done by having the camera higher or lower. For example, in the beginning of the movie Edward is seen from a lower angle making him seem more powerful and terrifying, possibly an antagonist, but by the end of the movie higher angles are used to show that he’s actually innocent, and more of a protagonist that is facing the world as an enemy. Also in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, the same technique is applied. At one point the scene is angled lower and the factory is the focus, making it seem abandoned and spooky or a much powerful place while the people in front of it are shown to look much smaller and weaker, by using a higher angled shoot. This allows the audience to predict each characters personality, and how the scene is supposed to make you feel.
Editing is one of the things most overlooked in producing a movie. What people don’t understand, is that over half the movie is done using different editing techniques. Whether it adds sounds, extra light, or scene changes, it all makes the movie piece together perfectly. In both Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, fading is used to move a real time event into a flashback.
