Most of the student is always struggle in the education system, they fight for getting a higher GPA every day and hope to have a better life in the future. However, good grading in your study really determinate to get a better life? How significant education influence life? Alan Bennett’s ‘‘The History Boys’’ and Abhijat Joshi’s ‘‘3 Idiots’’ shows similar issue in the story. Hector in The History Boys and Rancho in Three Idiots both suggest that the purpose of education is learning for life, should not be exam-oriented, and perseverance help success in life. This paper will used the characterization to compare ‘‘The History Boys’ ’ and ‘‘3 Idiots’’ with the theme about the relationship between education and meaning of life, and will be illustrated with the framework of psychoanalysis.
First, both Hector and Rancho altitude toward education is learning for life. In ‘‘The History Boys’’, when Hector discuss with Irwin in the topic of education, Hector said, “And what happens after the exam? Life goes on.”(Bennett 49). Hector think exam is just a learning processes, our life is not just aim in exams, after the exam, life goes on. Also, Hector said to the boys, “Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on boys. That’s the game I wanted you to learn. Pass it on.” He always repeats pass it on, he hopes the boys can enjoy life through literature, and can teach the next generation to inherit literature. The knowledge learnt must be useful in life. In “3 Idiots”, Rancho can use the knowledge learnt from school to apply in daily life. Mona, the pregnant women, she cannot go to the hospital Because of the heavy rain. Hector and Rancho are perseverance toward education, they purpose on learning for life and believed education not only for getting a high grading. If you are studying what you really loved and have enthusiasm, you will get success and your life will be meaningful. Also, you will gain respect from others. Education not just for exam, education has a great influence to a person life and future. No matter you are teacher or student, understand yourself, pursuit your dream, perseveres what you believed in education to find your life become meaningful. Education is just a learning process, life goes on.
In Ron Koertge’s “First Grade”, the author employs indirect characterization and foreshadows the affects of education by describing the speaker’s initial thoughts and beliefs and by writing in the past tense to show how education can limit students’ minds and rob them of their vitality.
Meaning, this book would be perfect to teach students life lessons that are important. Three of the themes that are good life lessons are: family, perseverance and survival, and humanization and dehumanization. All of these are found throughout the whole book which makes them hard to forget. Family is shown throughout the book because when Enrique’s mom leaves, all Enrique wants to do is to be with her. A short summary from Litcharts.com explains why family is such a big theme throughout the whole book. “Enrique’s Journey, as its title indicates, is the non-fiction story of a 17-year-old boy’s struggle to travel across Mexico to the United States to reunite with his mother. The events depicted in the book are set in motion by an initial instance of abandonment: Lourdes’ difficult decision to leave Enrique and his sister Belky in Honduras, while she seeks work in the United States to send money back to her family.” This whole quote shows, even though it was a hard choice for Lourdes, it was the right one because it was to help her family. Another theme that was found in the book that is a good lesson is about perseverance and survival. Survival is a trait everyone has, but this book highlights its importance, especially on the trains. Litcharts.com says, “He gives himself a time limit that shows his perseverance and the gravity of his decision: he will make it to his mother even if it takes a year. Despite the dangerous circumstances jumping trains, facing corrupt policemen, immigration checkpoints and officers, bandits, and gangsters, Enrique persists.” This teaches the readers that it is important to push through every difficulty no matter what, and that it is highly significant to survive to achieve the goal. Within the walls of our educational system lie many adverse problems. Is there a solution to such problems? If so, what is the solution? As we take a look at two different essays by two different authors’ John Gatto and Alfie Kohn, both highlight what’s wrong within our educational system in today’s society. As John Gatto explores the concept if schools are really as necessary as they’re made out to be; Alfie Kohn analyzes the non-importance of letter grades within our schools. Education is a topic that can be explored in many ways. Education is looked at in depth by both Richard Rodriguez in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, and by Paulo Freire in his essay, “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” After reading both essays, one can make some assumptions about different methods of education and exactly by which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life were affected by specific styles of education.
He wants to learn, is tenacious, self-advocates, and has a supportive group of family and friends. He shows that he is eager to learn, by working through a problem even when it makes no sense. For example, the homophone mix confusion: he is supposed to be understanding how many street “blocks” are used in the math problem and instead, Moises is thinking of building blocks. Later in the video, Moises self-advocates by asking his teacher for his test in Spanish and by asking the girl in his class what they are currently working on during the lesson. Today, in the contemporary United States, there are many different influencers to a person’s health, such as poverty and/or unemployment. However, education is the most important influence on health because without a good, thorough education, people are less likely to have access to health care, be able to afford health care and they are more likely to live shorter lives. A lack of education makes poverty and unemployment more likely, which obviously have a negative effect on a person’s health.
Being part of this study abroad was an experience unlike any other. That is to say, I experienced parts of my own culture that I had by no means witnessed before and I returned to the United States with a superior knowledge of my cultural roots. Similarly, as an educator after a week of teaching in Las Clavellinas I’ve gained an immense amount of understanding that would have taken me years to acquire in a traditional classroom setting in the United States. Consequently, this study abroad has confidently equipped me as an educator as I commence my teaching residency and for the real-world once I graduate and begin teaching.
