Being part of this study abroad was an experience unlike any other. That is to say, I experienced parts of my own culture that I had by no means witnessed before and I returned to the United States with a superior knowledge of my cultural roots. Similarly, as an educator after a week of teaching in Las Clavellinas I’ve gained an immense amount of understanding that would have taken me years to acquire in a traditional classroom setting in the United States. Consequently, this study abroad has confidently equipped me as an educator as I commence my teaching residency and for the real-world once I graduate and begin teaching.

The town and the school reminded me immensely of my hometown and, I felt an immediate connection with the students from the community. Consequently, I recognized what it means to be a teacher throughout those five days when taught the students of the community. Immediately, on Monday we discovered that some of the lessons we had planned before the trip were not the best for the students, therefore, we needed to create modifications on the spot, I grasped that an outstanding teacher needs to be flexible and adapt in order to meet the needs of the students in the classroom. For that reason, we would modify our lessons as the day went since we would teach Kinder through 5th grade all on the same day, it was a daunting task, but in retrospect, I feel a considerable superior confidence with my abilities as an educator. I am eager for my residency to begin in order for me to put into practice the skills I acquired during this study abroad. Growing up in a Mexican-American family can be very fun and crazy. Having two different perspectives on two different cultures almost daily really shapes you to become a certain way as you grow up, which is what happened to me. Ever since I was about three months old I have been taking trips to my parents home town for a month time each time we have gone. Practically growing up in both Mexico and the United States for six years has really helped me understand my cultural background and the different parts of my whole culture, such as the food, heritage, language and culture.

My experience on the service-learning trip to Guanajuato, Mexico was one where I connected information to experience to gain true wisdom and knowledge about the people, culture, and world view of Mexico. When I began the class portion of this experience, I was unsure of how the background information on the history of Mexico we were required to read would influence my service-learning experience in Guanajuato. What I expected of the trip was assisting in and teaching some English to a class of preschoolers-all other experiences would be extraneous and `touristy.' I poured over the readings and classroom information anyway, assuming that even if it would not be useful on this service-learning trip, it was interesting information that I could apply to my Spanish major. I quickly found out once in Guanajuato that the information learned in class would apply in nearly every way to my experience, and the synthesis of it with my experiences would change my opinion of the volunteer work I was doing, throw off my understanding of myself and my goals, make me reevaluate the motives of my future students and my country, and develop a greater understanding of the Mexican perspective.
I have heard many great things about studying abroad from family and friends. I hear things, including: studying abroad allows one to experience another culture directly, helps you develop new skills that you cannot learn in a classroom, and also helps one learn about themselves. Listening to the people close to me talk about how amazing their time abroad, was made me realize it is something I desire to do. I know this opportunity will be extremely beneficial to me for numerous reasons: I want to learn more about who I am and my values, I have never been off of the continent before, it is a great thing to put on my résumé and will enhance employment opportunities. Another semester has come and gone and I am a few steps closer to the goal I set for myself back in the spring of 2012. A degree! In a few scant months I will be at the halfway point earning my Associate of Arts degree and a couple years from now, hopefully, I will be stepping onto the stage up in Flagstaff and accepting my Bachelor’s degree.
Going back to school at 30 is not the same as going back to school at 20, especially when you’re a single parent with an established career. Returning to school never left my mind throughout the years, I received my associates seven years ago and between then and now a lot had changed. So many questions I asked myself; do I have the time, who can help watch my daughter, can I juggle another load, etc. I answered every one of my questions; unfortunately I gave myself excuses instead. The decision going back to school was overwhelming because it was taking up another full time job; making it a priority and possibly putting in overtime to study and do homework.
Being an international student is exciting. It offers a lot of exposure and scope for improvement. Canada has a lot of institutions that accept foreign students, but before that, the practical difficulties an international student might face in the country should be noted.

As if everything that has been learned from birth until now has been deemed invalid. Learning in done in the classroom; living is done in life. With no connection between the two. However to truly receive a good education is based solely on the ability to apply what you have learned to everyday experiences. After my high-school graduation I did not know which university should I go to? Should I go to a university in my home country or at one in other country? At that time I did not know the answer for that question, and I did not know which choice could be better. I needed some advice or someone to tell me the better choice, and in my life I did not know a person better than my dad on giving advices. He told me that the better choice would be to study abroad, and I will tell you how he convinced me.
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
The education system has come to realize the importance of exposing students to other cultures and giving them a sense of interconnectivity with the rest of the world. This has led to the development of foreign exchange and study abroad programs. These programs have given students the outstanding opportunity to learn and grow in their understanding of the world they live in while attending school.
Every travelling experience is unique in itself. Every person has a different experience to share. It all varies from the person undertaking the trip and the nature and destination of their travel. When I was growing up, I remember attending elementary school, learning a new language seems to be difficult at first, but I was able to learn the English language because of the dedication of one of my teachers. Now, as I reflect on this experience, it is obvious that she was dedicated and enjoyed teaching her students to be successful. There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work.
