Educating students with special needs in the twenty first century is a big challenge for teachers. There are thirteen categories of disability currently defined in IDEA that makes the job of an educator more challenging. Educators not only have to deal with making sure students with disabilities learn and pass state exams, but sometimes they have to deal with behavioral issues. To resolve most of these issues in the classroom, schools are creating professional learning communities where students are given opportunities to develop communication and social skills working collaboratively. For instance, when the teacher assigns activities that require no communication with other students, I feel great. I love being alone and learn by myself in the classroom because I am afraid students might make fun of me. I feel that the teacher needs to provide more opportunities for me to succeed in the classroom so I can be able to learn more like other students. The way I feel about participating in the classroom is not very good because of my language impairment and I feel that students might make fun of the way I speak. For instance, when the teacher asks me to read a passage, I do not like for other students to help me read because I feel useless. For this reason, I do not like to participate in the classroom or volunteer to read aloud. Having the disability of language impairment leads me to have not as many friends like other regular students do. For this reason, my communication and social skills are not proficient in the school because I am not establishing communications with my peers. My learning disability also affects my school experience in other ways, such as not being involved in any extracurricular activities because of my language impairment. My learning disability affects my social interactions in various ways in the school environment. One way that affects me, is not being able to communicate effectively with my teacher. In addition, it affects my social interactions with my peers because I would rather be alone than be with friends that might make fun of me. Consequently, my self-esteem is low because I want to hang out with my friends and have fun.
