The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Police Service both have and operate under a specific set of values, as well as a mission statement and vision for their community/company. Despite both being in the same geographical area, there are definitely some differences in how they operate, and what they view as important. To start with the City of Edmonton (furthermore referred to as Edmonton), they have a vision of being a leader in green energy, health care, and advanced technologies (2018). They also take pride in the fact that they are a city of many different cultures, educations, political and social differences, and yet all the people in Edmonton have a shared vision of the city. Edmonton also boasts having a city of high quality design. The Edmonton Police Service (EPS), on the other hand, has a vision to make Edmonton the safest major city in …show more content…
They also want to be recognized as one of the leaders in policing across the country. EPS has six values they try to live by, which is Integrity, Accountability, Respect, Innovation, Courage, and Community (2014). When it comes to the message these businesses are trying to communicate, the City of Edmonton seems to be trying to show that they are attempting to be a city of new ideas, a city that is self-sustainable, is able to support and care for a multitude of people, and give them the best possible chance of personal and business success. Alternatively, the Edmonton Police Service is trying to communicate that they are a community force that serves Edmonton. They want to keep Edmonton safe, keep it secure, keep it free from harm, and do so with the help and respect of the community. These communities both operate in the same area, and despite some contrasting ideas and opinions, have a very similar desired outcome for the City of Edmonton. Edmonton

The commitment to progress, exist in the changing environment. They seek opportunities for changes leading to improved police services.
Policing in Canada is much different from many other nations due to the rich cultural diversity that Canada is blessed with having. The discussion on policing in a multicultural society must be viewed as a much more political question on how to respond to diversity (Ben-Porat, 2007). Policing has a problem when minority groups feel alienated from the Police or when they feel that the police are enforcing discriminating policies and unjust laws (Ben-Porat, 2007). There are many examples in Canada of racial biases on the side of the police. Recently the RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson made a public address acknowledging racial bias in Canadian Policing (Ireland, 2016). Unfortunately, credibility and legitimacy of the police among different minority groups in Canada has yet to be met due to these groups feeling that they have been unfairly treated (Ben-Porat, 2007). Most police agencies in Canada now have some form of diversity training relating to specific minority groups. Another thing that some of Canadas police agencies have done
Police are sometimes stereotyped to be rugged, single minded enforcers who are insensitive to families in their most vulnerable state (Cross, Finkelhor, Ormrod, 2005). This would be an ideal approach to implement; however there seem to be difficult relationships between the two systems as they both hold different values and beliefs.
While on the job, police must put all their personal opinions aside. They must provide everyone with an equal and fair chance. It is important in a democratic society for police to not know too much about the community they are policing. It allows them to ...
Police officers have a substantial amount of responsibilities that are required to be upheld on an everyday basis. They are said to be the “front-line soldiers” in the criminal justice system (Fleming, Ramcharan, Dowler, & de Lint, 2007, p. 2) meaning they’re the first in the government to have face-to-face communication with the potential offender. “To Protect & Serve” is a broad motto that sums up the duties of a good police officer. Their role begins when a report to the police is made, actions or suspicions of a crime is present, and/or following an investigation made by the law enforcement (Fleming, Ramcharan, Dowler, & de Lint, 2007, p. 2). Typical tasks officers are engaged in are: to preserve the peace, prevent crime, enforce the law, investigate crimes, lay charges, etc (Fleming, Ramcharan, Dowler, de Lint, 2007, p. 105) but there is more to what is generally mentioned by the public, online sources, articles, books, and even the police themselves. Officers not only conduct a criminal investigation, but they also decide whether or not to proceed with obtaining an arrest which is a serious step in the justice process (Fleming, Ramcharan, Dowler, & de Lint, 2007, p. 2 & 4). Authors of The Canadian Criminal Justice System (2007, p. 4) states that because it is impossible to convict every single person who has broken...
As discussed in class some of the major trends are the baby boomers becoming older, gang sophistication and the growing diverse population. These are all issues that were stated in the framework which proves that these are identifiable issues in Alberta. Officers in a culture can contribute to these trends of the future when they have a common goal of serving the community. This can be seen in a very recent issue regarding the Attawapiskat suicides. Extra officers have been called to the area to help with the community and provide assistance to the youth. This is something that can be seen as a police culture view. The officers that are heading there to aid the community and the officers that are already stationed on the reserve have the common goal of helping the youth and allowing the community to recover. A police subculture that can impact the future of police trends are individuals that believe that there the community policing model is not the most efficient and effective way. An article put out by blueline.ca called Keeping Community in Community Policing, provides a detailed look at the officers that believe in community policing and the officers that have other views. It talks about how the agencies can count the arrests, the tickets, and the crimes, but the one thing they can’t count is the amount of prevention (Gilchrist, 2013). There are
Police: Breakdowns that allowed corruption are still uncorrected, study finds. The chief concedes that mediocrity became a way of life at all levels of the department. The Los Angeles Police Department failed time and again to take steps that might have headed off the worst corruption scandal in its history, according to a sweeping self-indictment prepared by the department's own leaders. In a letter accompanying the long-awaited Board of Inquiry report into the corruption centered in the department's Rampart Division, Police Chief Bernard C. Parks called the scandal a "life-altering experience for the Los Angeles Police Department" in which corrupt officers took advantage of lax supervision to carry out criminal acts. "We as an organization provided the opportunity," Parks wrote.

Perceptions of what constitutes a qualified police officer have been crafted as a result of numerous television shows and movies. They are often portrayed as heroic, invincible, and possessors of brute strength. While some of these physical attributes are in fact expected and required of police officers, they are not the only ones and at times, may come secondary to alternative methods, such as the use of strong communication and critical thinking skills. Policing has changed immensely since the days of resolving issues with a night stick. There is a desire for today’s police officers to possess the educational capacity to develop and implement community policing initiatives. Additionally, there exists a desire to professionalize policing. This drive for professionalism has led to the desire for increased educational requirements (Brecci, 1994).
Community policing allows officers to be actively involved on the streets alongside the community. Their focus is not only to solve crimes but to interact with the people in their neighborhood, establish a rapport with them. This initiative has gained popularity within recent years as the police and leaders of the community pursue more significant ways to promote public safety and to enrich the quality of life of their community members. The police and the citizens often come in contact with each other for a multitude of reasons other than criminal purposes. Police officers often engage in community service by providing an abundance of information for those in need, and they offer educational services at schools and outreach

They went further to add that young officers want to get out there chase suspects, makec arrest, and move from call to call, “do the adredaline stuff.” Community policing allows the officers to get together with other officers of other shifts to workout a plan to address the issues of certain neighborhoods (Gardiner, 96, 2016). It’s a strategy that allows officers to be more proactive among the community, instead of just responding to calls. Furthermore, it provides officers with the ability to meet the citizens needs and what they view as important (Gardiner, 110,
Community oriented policing has been around for over 30 years, and promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes, and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem solving tactics. The way community policing works is it requires the police and citizens to work together to increase safety for the public. Each community policing program is different depending on the needs of the community. There have been five consistent key elements of an effective community oriented policing program: Adopting community service as the overarching philosophy of the organization, making an institutional commitment to community policing that is internalized throughout the command structure, emphasizing geographically decentralized models of policing that stress services tailored to the needs of individual communities rather than a one-size-fits-all approach for the entire jurisdiction, empowering citizens to act in partnership with the police on issues of crime and more broadly defined social problems, for example, quality-of-life issues, and using problem-oriented or problem-solving approaches involving police personnel working with community members. Community oriented policing has improved the public’s perception of the police in a huge way. Community policing builds more relationships with the
