Allusion is a reference in a literary work that references something else without saying so directly.allusions are cultural or political references. However, allusions in western literature will often be to mythology, the bible ,and other well-known works of literature. Edgar Allan Poe makes several mention of the Plutonian Shore, a reference to the Greek underworld. He also uses Gilead as a reference. Gilead is a region in Jordan, famed in the Bible for producing botanical medicines. The "balm in Gilead" has become a common metaphor for a universal cure. First off, there are a few ways that Edgar Allan Poe's use of language helps to convey the tone in order to set the mood. One way is that Poe starts off the poem with dark words, such as dreary, weary, bleak, dying, and sorrow. These words contribute to create a gloomy atmosphere, and depression is portrayed since the poem is about a man who mourns the death of his love. With the use of these words, a sad, lonely, and depressing mood is established. Another way language can help convey the tone to set the mood is that Poe is very descriptive in his writing, and The Raven is full of detail. Phrases such as deep into the darkness or stillness gave no token adds to a melancholy mood. These phrases create a feeling of silence and being completely alone as well.
