Obviously, all these works we have read by Edgar Allan Poe have been trying to inform readers of something. Unfortunately, for almost two centuries, people who read and even analyze Poe have failed to understand what Poe was trying to get them to learn. That is, until now. The craft elements everyone knows were used by Poe when he wrote his stories were used to create a universal theme, that is: Death is unavoidable, and it can only be quickened, not lengthened. Of course, Poe’s use of symbolism and allusion can help people understand this, as can his metaphors and irony. The author uses thinking and reasoning to portray the theme. Poe’s unique diction comprehends with the theme of the story. Poe has a brilliant way of taking gothic tales of mystery, and terror, and mixing them with variations of a romantic tale by shifting emphasis from, surface suspense and plot pattern to his symbolic play in language and various meanings of words.

In the short story “ The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism to express ideas to develop his theme and characters. “ The Masque of the Red Death” tells a story of prince Prospero who locks his friends and himself in a castle to escape the Red Death, a deadly disease. Much to Prospero’s dismay, in the end, the deadly disease causes them to perish. Poe uses the dark room to reveal Prospero’s unusual character and reveal that death is always there and cannot be avoided.
Poe was a literary master with the emotions of his readers. He could make a reader feel anything he wanted to with just a few sentences. Through the stories 'The Black Cat'; and 'The Tell-Tale Heart';, he takes the reader through the emotions of his characters using writing methods that draw the reader in. His use of sentence structure and writing style allows the reader to become intimate with the character. Poe knew how the get a reader deep into the story; he could make them believe as thought they went through the deeds with the character. It is how Poe accomplishes this feat that is very interesting topic.
In "The House of Poe", Richard Wilbur elucidates his criticisms of Poe 's work. He firstly comments on a critic 's purpose, then how Poe 's stories are all allegories. He then addresses the possible opposition to his argument, and then begins his discussion of the common themes in Poe 's writing and provides examples from his stories. This dissertation will analyze Wilbur 's criticism by cross referencing Poe 's work and how it exemplifies Wilbur 's assessment. There is a great deal of evidence to support Wilbur 's theories, but a close examination of each one will determine how legitimate his argument really is.
For example, in the beginning of the story the narrator wakes up in a dark place that he is not familiar with. He wakes up and says “I strove to imagine where and what I could be… It was not that I feared to look upon things horrible, but that I grew aghast lest there should be nothing to see” (Poe 107). Poe included this because waking up somewhere dark and unfamiliar is a natural human fear. Something even worse is not knowing what is next or what one’s fate will be. The narrator can see in the last few seconds of his life that he has a choice between life and death. The pendulum that is above him keeps getting closer, but in only one inch intervals each time. Throughout the time he spends strapped down he experiences many different emotions regarding the death that awaits him. The narrators mixed emotions are connected to the swinging motions of the pendulum. At one point, he is so psychologically messed up that he thinks about giving up. However, he tries to disregard his nervousness at the time and think hard about what he can do to save himself. He finally comes up with the plan to save himself from the ultimate pendulum swing that would have killed him and is saved. Throughout the short story “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe uses vivid symbolism, structure, and reoccurring details to paint a powerful image regarding the finality and inescapable reaches of death itself. “The ‘Red Death’ has long devastated the country,” yet the Prince Prospero continues to hold extravagant parties for his fellow elite members of society. Rather than merely telling a series of events, Poe carries his readers throughout the many rooms and scenes that hold the Prince’s masquerade, up until the clock strikes midnight and the partygoers can no longer hide behind their façade, and death comes in to take those that thought themselves invincible (Poe 438-442).
Death is tragic and one of the most finite things on Earth. It can turn an average human being insane and change his/her life forever. Losing someone close and dear is incredibly painful and an experience one will not forget. Death can cause numerous emotions to bubble up, like sorrow, and grief. Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, "The Telltale Heart" and "The Masque of the Red Death" are two very different stories. One is about a simple man, perhaps a servant, who narrates the tale of how he kills his wealthy benefactor, and the other is about a prince who turns his back on his country while a plague known as The Red Death ravages his lands. Yet, there are some similarities in both. Time, for instance, and the stroke of midnight, seem to always herald the approach of impending death. Both are killers, one by his own hand, the other by neglecting his country. One seeks peace, the other seeks pleasure, but both are motivated by the selfish need to rid themselves of that which haunts them, even at the expense of another's life.
