There are many different skin conditions that exist. Often the similar characteristics of the conditions make it difficult for medical professionals to diagnose. A few of the most common skin conditions are eczema, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis.
At times, medical professionals can misdiagnose psoriasis as eczema due to common characteristics in symptoms. Eczema is the term used for several skin conditions where the skin is red and irritated. The signs and symptoms of eczema can vary. It is believed that eczema is inherited, making prevention impossible; however, flare ups can be prevented by avoiding triggers. This condition occurs when the skin comes in contact with a foreign substance causing the skin to become red, itchy, and inflamed. There are three types of contact dermatitis. They are allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and photo-contact dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis causes the body to release chemicals causing the skin to become irritated. The most common causes of this type of dermatitis include allergic reactions from latex gloves, poison oak or poison ivy, and jewelry such as nickel or gold. Irritant contact dermatitis is the most common type of contact dermatitis and occurs when the skin comes in contact with toxic substances such as battery acid, bleach, and kerosene. Photo-contact dermatitis is not very common and only occurs when the active ingredients in sunscreen are exposed to sunlight. The symptoms of contact dermatitis depend on what caused the skin irritation and the person’s sensitivity to the cause. According to the Mayo Clinic website, “Psoriasis is caused when cells build up on the surface of the skin.” (November 25, 2015).Often the buildup of cells can be painful. The symptoms of psoriasis can be different from person to person. Symptoms may include red patches of skin, swollen and stiff joints, and dry, cracked skin. At this time psoriasis does not have a known cause; however, medical professionals believe it’s related to a problem with one’s immune system. There are several factors that may trigger psoriasis, which include stress, smoking, heavy alcohol use, and infections. Psoriasis can occur in anyone, however, there are a few factors that can increase a person’s risk. These factors include family history, excess weight, and viral and bacterial infections. Psoriasis can also cause further health complications. A person with psoriasis has a greater risk of acquiring eye conditions, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.
