Abortion (a·bor·tion) - the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Whether it’s because the baby is the result of rape or they can’t financially support the baby, many women all around the world go through with an abortion, sometimes as a last resort. There are many abortion methods that include medical, surgical, and the injection of poison. Although the thought of abortion may seem like a terrible and gruesome thing to some people, it does have some benefits. It benefits the future of young adults who aren’t ready to have a child, and have their whole lives ahead of them. Also, it benefits the health of women whose bodies can’t handle carrying or giving birth to a baby.
The earliest found evidence of abortion dates back to 1760 BCE (Head, n.d.). At that time, ,it was a crime to have a miscarriage through assault. The first first recorded evidence of a deliberate abortion was in 1550 BCE, from the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus (Head, n.d.). A woman who had an abortion in 1075 BCE was given the death penalty because she had the abortion against her husband’s wishes (Head, n.d.). Even royal women in China had abortions in the years 515 and 500 BCE, according to Chinese record documents. Abortion was acceptable in classical Greece. That was because Greek philosophers didn’t think of the fetus to be an actual human until it took it’s first breath of air. So, because of those philosophers, abortion was found to be morally acceptable. Even one of the greatest ancient Athenian philosophers, Aristotle, viewed that if an abortion was performed in the early stages of a pregnancy, it was okay. He said that because he thought that in the early stages of a pregnancy, an abortion woul...

While some people see abortion as a crime against humanity, others see it as something that helps the future of a mother with an unwanted child. While it is illegal in some places, people still go to practitioners that illegally perform abortions, even with the risk of having health issues afterwards. Abortion affects the lives of young adults in multiple ways, and it also benefits the health of women too. Personally, I would not be able to have an abortion because in Islam, it is not permissible for a woman to have an abortion. Whether abortion is legal or illegal, it will still happen.
Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth; it causes the termination of the embryo or fetus inside the woman. There are two different types of abortion, a spontaneous abortion, which is also known as a miscarriage, and an induced abortion, where the embryo or fetus is purposely removed from the woman’s body. The topic of induced abortion has been widely debated for hundreds of years. The issue of abortion was argued way back in the time of the ancient Hebrews. In the United States, it became illegal around the mid 1800’s and not until the 1960’s was the argument for the right to abort brought back to the table.

For many years, the morality of abortion has been questioned by two perspectives: pro-choice and pro-life. While modern culture explains that abortion is a woman’s free choice if she does not want the unborn baby, the Catholic Church teaches the world that from the moment of conception there is a child with a soul within the womb, and to abort it would be to murder an innocent being.

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by destruction of a fertilized egg, embryo or fetus before birth, prior to the time when the fetus attains viability, or capacity for life outside the uterus (Encyclopedia, 1995, p.43). Currently almost twenty-five percent of pregnancies in the United States are aborted. About one forth of people who abort are teenagers, fifty-seven percent are younger than 25, and almost eighty percent are unmarried. During the first trimester is when most of the abortions take place. Only about ten percent are performed later in the pregnancy (Slife, 1998, p.329). Abortions go back as far as Ancient Greece where it was used as a type of population control. Then in the Roman Times men had total control over the procedure. “Man could give law-enforced command that his wife have an abortion, or he could punish or divorce his wife for having one without his consent” (Encyclopedia, 1995, p.43).
Abortion is defined as a procedure that is done to remove an embryo or fetus from the uterus of its mother in order to prevent its birth (Roth, 2005). Abortion is categorized as a bioethical issue because it relates to the morals of biomedical advances, policies and research. Abortion is a difficult subject that can involve personal morals and beliefs, legality and religious values. The issue is often viewed from either the side of pro-life, which places emphasis on the fetus and its right to life or pro-choice, which emphasizes the rights of the mother to decide the appropriate action (Roth, 2005). This brings the ethical question of should the government have the right to outlaw abortion into debate. The two viewpoints of pro-life and pro-choice explore the two main moral issues concerning abortion (Roth, 2005).
