Childhood is the most important time of lives where our minds and bodies experience the most growth and development. Our early years are extremely influential on the rest of our lives and the way that we cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally process. There are so many different factors that play into the ways that we develop. In order to understand this process more fully, I spent some time observing Stella, a five year old girl whom I am able to interact with on a fairly regular basis. To back up my observations and add to the information I take in, I am using two different theories that well support many aspects of development. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory as well as Vygostky’s Sociocultural Learning Theory of Cognitive
Development both provide viable facts that coincide with what I saw in Stella. Cognitive development is very obvious in young children. It was very easy to recognize the ways that Stella was continuing to work on her cognitive skills. First off I had come to her house just in time for dinner. She turned to me and said that there was an extra water cup on the table for me. She new what the normal amount of cups they usually had and that an extra had been provided. All through dinner she talked, mainly to herself, as the rest of the family spoke to me or other siblings. After dinner she insisted that I look over some of her school work. She wanted me to see how well she was writing and coloring. She began working on some of her homework as I watched. She became irritated when she made mistakes especially when she accidentally colored outside of the lines. At one point she began trying to find an eraser to attempt to remove the colored pencil. She did not recognize that the eraser actually did not get rid of the mistakes she wanted it to. Stella then began quizzing me on my ability to add numbers. On a paper she wrote down some addition problems for me. When I answered however she would tell me I was wrong and change the problem saying she tricked me. Although I did the

Urie Bronfenbrenner was a famous Russian American psychologist who formulated the Ecological Model Systems in 1979. He believed that as a child grow and mature, the way he/she interact with the environment become more complex. The Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model Systems defines how external environments and individuals affect the development of a child. It is made up of four systems that greatly influence the development of a child. The four systems are microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem. Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. The facility I did my observation at was Tutor Time in Fairfield, and I arrived there at 3:15pm. When I arrived there, I could instantly see that it was a child centered program by the feel of the artwork the kids had made that were on the walls, the passing classrooms and it smelled like sugar cookies throughout the building. It was very quiet in the office area and in the halls when I was walking to the class of preschoolers.
The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.
Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory “looks at children’s development within the context of the systems of relationships that form their environment.” (MORRISON, 2009) This theory describes multifaceted tiers within the environment, where each layer has a specific influence upon a child’s development.
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory will be applied throughout this essay to delve into the reasoning behind particular behavioural issues. According to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, an individual has multiple environments known as their ecological systems (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). Bronfenbrenner (1994) suggests that a developing child is influenced by the relationships surrounding them and the best way to understand a child’s behaviour is to look at the numerous aspects of the child’s environment and how they interact with each other. The relationships and environments that the child interacts with have been separated into layers known as the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and the overarching chronosystem (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). The microsystem is the environment where the child has direct face-to-face relationships such as at home, day care and school (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). The relationships formed within the microsystem directly impact the development of a child (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). It is through the processes of repeated interactions with people, objects and symbols that the human develops (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). The second layer in the ecological model is the mesosystem, which is the interaction between two of the microsystems such as the relationship between a parent and a teacher (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. I encourage this by taking him to local performances of children’s musicals. Jeffrey has learned the routines pretty well and is reasonably cooperative for his age.
