Bronfenbrenner theorised that there are many different influences that affect a child’s development, forming 5 systems to categorise certain events, or environments into. This theory helps me to understand the theme of Nature Vs Nurture, as it gives some context as to what environments can affect a child's development. From this, we can work out solutions for each child's situation, to ensure that their development is still progressing. The first system, microsystem, is the immediate environment around a child, such as their family and carers, as this is where most of a child’s nurture will come from. Within my placement we had children from lower and middle class, and also a few higher class children. This allowed me to see how different classes have different language skills. A child from a low class family would use broken English, as they came from an area which used a lot of slang, and wouldn’t speak in full sentences. Where as those brought up middle class areas, have stronger English skills and are able to communicate their needs more effectively. So when they mix, some children can find it difficult to understand other children, which could discourage them from communicating with them. Although, it could have a negative affect on their own language skills, as they could be around children who use broken English, and so they might start to use it too. On October 9, 1968, a set of twins were born, but separated at birth and ultimately, put up for adoption. The decision to separate the twins came from the adoption agency who wanted to conduct a nature versus nurture experiment; however, the experiment was conducted in secret. However, for unknown reasons, the experiment never developed to fruition. Unaware the child they adopted was a twin; both sets of parents raised a singular child. Thirty-five years later, one twin began a search for her biological mother through the adoption agency, only to find out that she was born a twin. Upon learning her identity, she reached out to her twin and they began the journey of getting to know one another by comparing characteristics that appeared similar such as temperament and mannerism. They even discovered that they both held positions as a film critic and enjoyed almost identical movies.

Typically children begin speaking by twenty-four months and first enter the school system at the age of six. In a society where English is expected as a first language and children are expected to have a firm grasp of comprehension and conversation by kindergarten, children with non-English home languages are at a distinct disadvantage. The Battle of Nature vs. Nurture In Nancy Kress' "In Memoriam", the philosophical issue of identity becomes apparent. As a son pleads to his mother to take part in a medical procedure, which wipes your mind clear of memories, the question of "what makes me'me'?" arises. Set in the future, the mother is faced with a decision: whether or not she wants to die as a result of having too many memories, or as a result of having none at all. Behaviourism refers to the school of psychology founded by Watson, established on the fact that behaviours can be measured and observed (Watson, 1993). In behaviourism, there is a strong emphasis that the acquisition of learning, or permanent change in behaviour, is by external manifestation. Thus, any individual differences in behaviours observed was more likely due to experiences, and not by the working of genes. Nature versus nurture refers to the relationship between development and heredity and environmental factors. The answer lies on a spectrum between environmental factors and heredity. Psychologists on the environmental side are called empiricists. Empiricists believe that human development is fully influenced by a person’s environment.
