I will be looking at two different assessment tools one is a traditional assessment tool to an authentic electronic portfolio assessment. I will look at the age of 4-5 years old (preschool age) assessments. I work at Little Giants Learning Academy in Florida were the teachers use three assessment tools one from the center and two made from state. I will look at the one from the center and one from the state which is Teaching Strategies GOLD. Teachers can use technology to enhance assessments, less space of assessments of the child's performance and abilities. There are 38 research based objectives in Teaching Strategies GOLD which truly helps teachers focus on what matters most for school readiness. The objectives cover 10 areas of development and learning. It has Electronic portfolios that offer a great amount of storage, allowing teachers to upload, organize, and securely store photos, videos, and samples of children’s work. Parents as well can logon in see their child progress. Gold is an ongoing assessment and is observed well the child is playing not one on one like the traditional one. Some teachers are scare or uncomfortable with change and some love it. Our past experiences with innovative technologies would suggest one technology cannot be so easily swapped for another. The introduction of a new tool into human activity often changes that activity in ways unanticipated and sometimes profound. It has been the same for years doing the traditional paper assessment on children and teacher and most people get used to it and don’t want change. Some teachers are not formal with technology to use some of the new assessments which are all online like is Teaching Strategies GOLD where we use tablets and take photos and videos. Then there are teachers like me who love the excitement and see the benefit that this new technology can bring to the classroom like saving time and having different forms to look at for evidence that the child is meeting that skill of development, and also free up some classroom
Early childhood education, although constantly evolving, was actually established and practiced as early on as the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. The foundation that early childhood education is based upon is to instill in children the skills needed to succeed later on in life, while making sure young children enjoy their time in schooling. Throughout chapter 3 in the textbook Who Am I in the Lives of Children, the reader is capable of evaluating just how greatly the methods for teaching today’s youth have evolved and changed for the better.
The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.
The work sampling system plays an integral part in many teachers’ assessments of their students. The work sampling system is based off teachers’ observations of their students through problem solving, classroom interaction, classroom learning, and creating. It is an authentic performance assessment because everything you collect on a student is their authentic work, and cannot be recreated. The system can be used in pre kindergarten through fifth grade. While walking through the front gates of County elementary school, you see children of all ages playing while they wait for the school bell to ring. Walking to the classroom that I will be observing you see students with their parent’s line up waiting to get signed in. The students are to be signed in by a parent or guardian for safety precautions, and shows that the child was signed into school. As a visitor, I am to sign myself in, this shows I was in the classroom, at what time was I there, and reason for visiting the classroom.
I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. I encourage this by taking him to local performances of children’s musicals. Jeffrey has learned the routines pretty well and is reasonably cooperative for his age. Before learning about early childhood in this class I never realized all the way children at such a young age are developing. From the second part of this course I learned how much children are developing at the early childhood stage. I never realized children learn how about their emotions, having empathy, and self-concept at such a young age. I thought children had it easy. They play with friends, start school, and just be kids. One important thing that stood out to me in this chapter is that children’s self-esteem starts at this stage. According to Berk (2012), “self-esteem is the judgments we make about our own worth and the feelings associated with those judgments (p. 366)”. I choose to observe at the Central Village Child Care Center in Warrensburg Missouri. In this facility, all children were separated by rooms. Each room was labeled with the age group of each child, ranging the children from infants to 3rd grade. I entered a dark room where four individuals slept peacefully before me.
