The poem “since feeling is first” by E. E. Cummings is a poem that uses the deep rooted romantic and religious nature to convince the reader that life should be lead to the fullest because of mortality. The poem uses the play on words and the way words sound to instill romantic and religious images throughout the poem. The unusual grammar and punctuation are tools to give deeper meaning than the words themselves. The poem uses a double meaning of several words such as feeling, kiss and as a word play on the word wholly. Rather than the physical act of feeling, touching requires thought to identify an object, but instead feeling conveys emotion. No one is actually getting kissed, but the use of the word kiss implies an act of affection and romance. Cummings uses the affection and romance of the kiss with, “we are for each other:” (Cummings 1). Diving deeper into human nature and tying religion to the romance of kiss Cummings uses the word wholly. The sound is the same as the word holy to suggest a spiritual implication. If a person is never “wholly kissed” (Cummings 1) then a person cannot be holy kissed. Meaning, if the order of all or syntax is the focus of life, the life lived will not be a blessed one. She compares the feeling of nature with her personal feelings of being alone after having so many lovers. In “What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why” Millay reminisces back to a time when she had one lover after another. She cries because she lost them all and instead of opening her heart to them and offering her love, she remained closed off and simply enjoyed the physical connections. Edna St. Vincent Millay may have imagined a speaker for this poem, but she makes it seem as if it is coming from her own personal experiences.

Cummings uses the seasons, bells, his unique composition and the repetition of “Women and men” and “anyone” to create and emphasize the unfortunate cycle of life. The use of the seasons in lines three,eleven, and thirty-four emphasise the passing of time and the unchanging ways of the townspeople. “Women and men”, in lines five and thirty-three,are used to remind us of Cummings definition of “most people” and how people tend to blend in and follow. The alliteration in one through four (whisky, waltzing, was) flows nicely, contrasting to the negativity of the first stanza, while seven through eight (countenance, could) sound unpleasing to the ear, emphasizing the mother’s disapproval. The imagery of the father beating time on the child’s head with his palm sounds harmful, as well as the image of the father’s bruised hands holding the child’s wrists. It portrays the dad as having an ultimate power over the child, instead of holding his hands, he grabs his wrists.
The phrasing of this poem can be analyzed on many levels. Holistically, the poem moves the father through three types of emotions. More specifically, the first lines of the poem depict the father s deep sadness toward the death of his son. The line Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy creates a mental picture in my mind (Line 1). I see the father standing over the coffin in his blackest of outfits with sunglasses shading his eyes from the sun because even the sun is too bright for his day of mourning. The most beautiful scarlet rose from his garden is gripped tightly in his right hand as tears cascade down his face and strike the earth with a splash that echoes like a scream in a cave, piercing the ears of those gathered there to mourn the death of his son.
