E-Commerce In Latin America
Where Is It Now, Where Is It Going, Who Is Taking It There?
In recent years, the media has made much of the growing consumer markets in Latin America. North Americans have to come to understand that much of the health of the U.S. economy is tied to the economic well-being of Latin countries such as Brazil and Mexico. Yet even with our awareness of the market size of our neighbors and awareness of our increasing interdependence, most North Americans consider the emerging Latin American markets to be underdeveloped, backwards, comprised of technologically unprepared people. How accurate is this conception, and specifically, what is the status of the Latin American market for e-commerce?
In order to understand any market for the first time, one must answer several basic questions:
How large is the market? How fast is it growing?
What are the buying patterns in the market? How might they change?
When will the market “take off?” What is blocking or helping market growth?
Who is already in the marketplace? Who is likely to enter?
This paper outlines the answers to these initial questions, and makes the case that North Americans need to pay attention to emerging Latin ecommerce markets- whether as advertisers, consumers, or trendwatchers.
Market Size and Growth Rate
As recently as August 1999, the Boston Consulting Group stated that on-line retailing in Latin America will reach $77 million in 1999. This figure represents web sales earned by Latin American based e-tailers. The same report states that an additional $90 million in revenues will be earned by U.S.-based online merchants this year. Currently majority revenue is generated by store sales but online sales from the stores’ websites are increasing. With US dollar getting weaker, international sales from these US based websites are increasing too. This creates significant positive outlook for the large incumbent players but also acts as a significant barrier of entry for new players.

Amazon.com operates in the Online Retail Industry. The sector is one of the fastest growing globally and is outperforming the ordinary retail marketplace. It was created after 1995 and it was only the Internet that made it possible for such an industry not only to be established but to become one of the most flourishing sectors in the business environment. What is interesting is that Amazon.com, together with eBay is the pioneer in the field. Both companies were launched in 1995 and are still extremely successful. The creation of e-mail in 1996 had a huge impact on the development of online retail by introducing a fast and easy way to communicate with customers. For this two-year period Internet usage doubled annually, thus, allowing for the expansion of the industry. Google is launched a year later, in 1998, only to become the most used search engine in the world and an essential partner for the online retailers by helping them tailor their websites to customer’s personal preferences and by advertising. After that, more and more people see the opportunity in the growing industry and enter it. By 2001 there are more than 513 million Internet users globally, which calls for action in terms of creating regulations and laws to protect the users and personal property. In 2003, Apple launches iTunes, and provides a platform for low-cost digital downloads. Another major change is the appearance of social media from 2004, which is one of the biggest influencer on the state of the industry. To succeed in making a good first impression and in carrying out any type of business transaction, it is important to understand what these differences are. When conducting business in Mexico, there are specific things that must be understood and complied with. Just understanding how important building a relationship is, such as shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries, can have a huge impact. What could potentially be the start of a bad or mediocre business trip now has the possibility of being a successful one.
International regulations are slowing Amazon’s expansion. Some countries’ regulations limit possibilities of internet purchases. However, internet providers bring faster and more affordable internet to more consumers which enable more consumers to shop at Amazon. Often, the company under analysis needs help of national governments to launch its authorized countywide websites and receive benefits in regard to taxation. In less internet penetrated open countries, besides direct investments, Amazon requires assistance of local authorities to develop the demand for e-commerce to a significant level. An online global retailer can expand its operations to closed countries through strengthening political relationships and trade pacts. In new countries, Amazon needs either pre-determined national priority supporting the e-market development or strong governmental lobbying of internet-based industry to increase the governmental capacity to earn. In some instances, the corporation needs local political hierarchies to relax cultural or religious ideologies for facilitating conditions friendly to the e-commerce development.
The science of business has been studied for years, specifically about different markets and how they work and interact. Figuring out the way it lives and breathes can create a lot of success for a person. The key is to find the right market to enter, each market comes with its ups and downs, but all markets have explicit limitations and trends. Today, modern capitalist societies tend to let the market take over the production, maintenance, and distribution of goods that were previously non-market. While this is occurring, there’s also a disagreement on which goods are properly subject to market transactions and which are not.
In the early 2000s, there was a decline in economic activity in developing countries. Moreover, its repercussions were also felt by developed countries, one of which is the the United States of America experienced an economic state, which showed recessionary qualities. However, in early 2002, there was slow yet positive economic growth, low interest rates, a strong housing market, rising unemployment, uncertain consumer confidence, and concern over consumer confidence. It’s expansion comes in the form of acquisition of EXPO Design Centers, retail shops in urban shops, and international branching, establishing itself in Canada and Mexico, through, yet again, acquisition of existing chains in their respective locations.
Since its launch in the mid '90s, Dell's e-commerce business has been a poster child for the benefits of online sales, says Aberdeen Group analyst Kent Allen. One of the greatest opportunities for Amazon is an Online Payment System. The online system allows the company to reduce transaction fees and increase ease of use for their customers. Internet sales are increasing at a fast pace. This is a product of increased fuel prices, which make driving to a store less likely, and foreign purchases. Countries such as China, Canada, and Mexico are the biggest sources of products sold online in the United States. Businesses find it much cheaper to produce the same products they would produce in the United States in other countries. Businesses are beginning to move to these countries because they deal with less regulation and are able to pay workers less than legally allowed in the United States. Sequentially, the United States’ line of production gets cut severely from businesses exploiting the alternative countries to produce products.
