Droughts in Chad
In our world, we are faced with many severe phenomenons. In the continent of Africa, droughts are one of the many phenomenons that have been acknowledged. An African country like, Chad, located east of Niger and southwest of Egypt, is a old victim of this phenomenon The Sahel regions, consisting of countries like Chad, Mauritania, Mali, etc…, face droughts regularly. Half of the country is in the Saharan Desert, while the other half, in the Sahel region. Its regular scarcity of rainfall leads to droughts. According to Hydrological Sciences Journal, “West African Sahel has experienced a significant drought which, according to some authors, corresponds to a discontinuity (abrupt change) in the rainfall series” (“Hydrological Sciences Journal”, 564). This demonstrates that a drought, or lack of annual rainfall, has occurred since the late 19th century. This paper will analyze several articles and scientific conclusions that ventilated the droughts in the Sahel region, namely Chad.
A drought is a phenomenon that occurs in many places in the world. It can be defined as the scarcity of water in an area, resulting to the quality of the land, deteriorated. Droughts can take place through human activities, or even dramatic climate changes. Drought can alter the food chain as well, by eliminating livable habitats for many species; resulting to massive extinction. However, that is more of the biological effects of droughts. Deficiency of annual rainfall can introduce the “drought effect”. Even though the Sahelian region experienced many severe droughts, 1971 to 2000 were the “three driest decades in the 20th century” (“Hydrological Sciences Journal”,564).In the Sahelian region, it is said that it received 300 to 700 mm of ...

On the heart (center) of California is a flat area with miles and miles of farms and up to 230 different crops. The central valley agriculture is essential to the United States; it not only delivers almost half of the produce but also helps the economy by also giving more job opportunities (California Department of food and agriculture, 2014). Many families depend on the central valley agriculture to survive economically in the United States. It is a well-known fact that rain and snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains are a very important element in the central valley. No rain in the central valley can cause many devastating issues to occur quickly. Recently in the year of 2013 California received less rainfall than years before. The small amount of water the central valley is receiving is harming not only to the land but humans and animals as well. It’s destroying the habitats of animals with forest fires caused from the dry spells occurring. The central valley is going through a drought, so much that around this time of year the central valley usually accumulates enough rain for the necessities in the valley, agriculture for example. This year, however, has been different, the central valley hasn’t received enough water and this has caused a drought in the valley. Water is an important element in this world for not only human life, but for the environment in general, a shortage of water supply can bring issues to the environment and those living in it. The central valley holds the largest percent of class one soil, not only that, the valley grows a third of all the produce being grown in the United States, that’s more than 230 crops that are being grown in the central valley. However, this drought isn’t only affecting the resident...
Americans today tend to believe that the Colorado River drought has been a recent occurrence, although drought relief strategies have been implemented since early 1997. To summarize, in the book The Colorado River Basin Drought Planning and Organizations, Colorado is named as the original state to acquire a drought relief plan. For instance, various assume water levels are diminutive in the Colorado and blame is due to the previous ten years of drought throughout the United States. Although it is true that water levels are at a record low, initial plans in the early 1920’s to introduce manufactured structures into the water basin is the original reason Colorado’s water system began to be compromised. It follows, then the supplementary natural
The Sahel zone has been made virtually uninhabitable from the effects of Desertification. There is a lot less amount of crops being produced by the Sahelian farmers. About 50 years ago farmers use to produce 7 times as much produce as now. [IMAGE] [IMAGE] This is a climate graph for Ethiopia, which is in the Sahel zone, and as you can see on the Temperature is very high and the average precipitation is low for what the temperature is in most months.
Niger is eighty-percent desert which doesn't provide natural resources or availability of water, even though the Niger River is a huge resource for Niger. With its beautiful, sparkling water flowing southwest in a sort of crescent shape it is a place of relief. Along this river, they have wonderful areas for farming and grazing and one can find the most populous city and the capitol Niger called Niamey. This Sub-Saharan country not only has the Sahara desert to deal with, but the Tener...
The another devastating abiotic stress which is considered to be highly responsible worldwide for decreasing yield and quality of crop productivity is drought (Lambers et al. 2008 ; Moghadam et al .,2011; Mohsen Pourgholam et al.,2013 ; M. Farooq et al., 2012; Abolhasani and Saeidi, 2004 ; Monjezi et al., 2013).It harms plant growth and development and reduces crop growth rate and also affects biomass accumulation. Generally, in crop plants drought severely affects the cell division and expansion, elongation of root, leaf size, proliferation of root and inhibition of shoot growth (Sharp & Davies 1989; Spollen et al.,1993;Yamaguchi et al.,2010). Furthermore ,it also badly hampers all kinds of plant functions and physiological and biochemical traits such as mineral elements, carbohydrates, free radicals, ions, hormones, lipids, and nucleic acids (HongBo et al., 2005; Yasar et al., ; Moghadam et al .,2011,Mohsen Pourgholam et al,2013) .The transportation of nutrients from the roots to the stem severely get affected by drought as the rate of transpiration is reduced and damage of active transport and membrane permeability take place (Viets, 1972; Alam, 1999; Yasar et al ). Simultaneously, due to decrease in soil moisture, problem occurs with the low distribution of absorbed nutrients by the plant roots in the soil (Alam, 1999; Yasar et al ). More importantly, drought leads to rise in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to energy accumulation in stress condition of plants (Smirnoff 1993; Asada 2006; Waraich et al.,2011).Drought diminishes photosynthetic carbon fixation primarily through restraining the entrance of CO2 into the leaf or by reducing metabolism (Smirnoff 1993; Loggini et al., 1999; Ap...
Chad is one of the poorest countries on the African continent. Chad's economy is mostly agricultural and eighty percent of Chad's population relies on subsistence farming and livestock rising as their livelihood, cotton farming, growing sorghum, millet, groundnuts, vegetables, and fruits (Azevedo, Graham, and Nnadozie, 1997). The other twenty percent of Chad's population works in the services industry such as, manufacturing, services, and the military.
This disease has been affecting Africa for countless decades and the impact of climate change has intensified malaria’s outbreak. Warm and humid weather conditions that persist throughout the year such as those around tropical lowlands are suitable for water-associated diseases such as malaria (Ermert, Fink, Morse & Paeth, 2012). A study done by Ermert el. al. (2012) used regional climate models to produce an integrated weather–disease model to foresee future malaria outbreaks. The study concluded that in formally epidemic-prone areas there was a substantial growth (Ermert el. al., 2012). As a result, the spread of malaria showed an increase in highland territories and in arid and semiarid areas of East Africa. The Ethiopian Highlands, Eastern Arc Mountains, and parts of the Western Rift Valley saw the largest outbreak of mosquitos carrying malaria due to its change in future weather conditions (Higgings, Scheiter, 2012). The study leads to a notable prolongation of malaria transmission and an earlier start and later end of the season in the above areas and even more alarming is the case to the Sahel (Ermert el. al.,
Lying on Ethiopia’s southern border is Kenya. On the south western border sits South Sudan and Sudan covers the north western border (Ofcansky and Berry). Much of Ethiopia is covered by highlands, plateaus and mountains and with this country’s climate is categorized as primarily H with some subcategories of B in the Köppen system (Attoh). The Western Highlands and Eastern Highlands that consume most of Ethiopia are dissected by the Eastern Rift Valley that slices through from the northeast to the southwest. The highlands here are classified as H climates, which means that they experience temperate climates and dry winters.
The weather in this novel controls their crops and the river flow; which controls their food and water supply. They depend on adequate rainfall to help their crops to grow and for the river to be full. They also depend on the sun to warm things up and make the crops grow. However, if there is too much rain or too much sun it can cause many problems, such as a drought or a flood. These things are significant in this novel, because t...
Water shortage affects the agricultural sector, so as a consequence the price of production increases. The water crisis affects the economy and health of the population, so people need to understand that water is a priority to life.

Desertification is an increasing global issue that has caused many concerns throughout the world. Desertification affects mostly Africa; however it has (and still is) taking its toll on the Arabian Peninsula, southern Asia, Australia, southern South America, and the southwest region of the North American continent (“Desertification”, 2013). According to “Desertification: A Forgotten Threat”, every year, some 23,000 square miles of arable and range land are uncontrollably lost to desert, leaving an exceeding amount of consequences for the entire globe to face. As alarming as this fact is, it is important to understand the negative effects that desertification exerts on these affected areas, exactly what this problem is, what it is doing, why it’s happening, why it is important, and what global communities, as well as world leaders can do to prevent it from spiraling out of control in the future. This paper will focus on the physical and economical hardships due to desertification, the causes of it, the necessary measures that should be taken to prevent it, as well as the importance of spreading global awareness regarding this topic.
Global warming is one of the main causes, which leads to the lack of water and drought. A drought-like condition exists in most of India’s part. Government of India states that 68% of the country is disposed to the drought, which (consequences are) leads to massive migration of people to more favorable places, famine, conflicts among inhabitants. India is known in the world as one of the biggest producers of water-intensive crops such as rice, sugarcane and wheat. According to a survey done by Grail Research, approximately 82% of total water is used for agricultural consumption and 90% of it is employed for irrigation of rice, wheat and sugarcane (Grail Research, LLC, 2009). There are several solutions which could lead to the decr...
