“The Rez Sisters” Essay – Dreams & Ambitions Thomson Highway’s, “The Rez Sisters”, is a play written about a group of sisters living on a reserve in Wasayachigan Hill, in Manitoulin Island, Ontario. During the course of the play, Thomson provides an exploration of ambitions, dreams and reality. The group of sisters collectively decide that they want to attend THE BIGGEST BINGO IN THE WORLD. In order for this to happen, the sisters display ambition on making their trip a success. They all march together to the council to enquire a loan to go towards their trip. “I say we march down to the Band Office and ask the Band for a loan that will pay for the trip to this bingo” says Pelaija (Pg. 1269). In order for the sisters to make their trip happen, they head over to Pelaija’s basement to discuss various fundraising methods they each contribute to make the trip a success. Pelaija says she would build herself a nice paved road that would put the chief to shame and then she would move to Toronto. Philomena talks about getting a brand new sparkling toilet if she wins the bingo. She then later talks about hiring a lawyer to find the child she gave up for adoption 28 years ago if she won the jackpot. Annie’s dream when she wins is to buy lots of records, a record player and going out to listen to live bands with her daughter and her boyfriend. Veronique’s dream is to purchase a brand new stove that’s big enough to cook for the whole reservation. These are all examples illustrating realistic dreams. Thomson also illustrates unrealistic dreams in this play. An example of an unrealistic dream is Marie Adele’s. Marie Adele talks about buying an island for her family and herself to live on. Even in the 90’s this would be unrealistic even with $500,000 because islands were more expensive than
