The Classical Erechtheion
Arne Jacobsen once said “proportions are what makes the old Greek temples classic in their beauty. They are like huge blocks, from which the air has been literally hewn out between the columns.” For the temple of The Erechtheion this was true for both the entire structure of the temple as well as the ionic caryatids that stand in place of traditional Doric columns. The master architect of the Erechtheion from 421-405 BCE was said to be Mnesikles. Not much is known about Classical Greek architect Mnesikles except he was responsible for the design of many famous structures—especially the Parthenon. Destroyed by the Persians, the Erechtheion was unavoidably built on an uneven terrain. What makes this temple unique is its asymmetrical design. It was very uncommon for Greek structures to be asymmetrical but being built off of the old archaic temple remains the Erechtheion housed preexisting shrines. Not only is the terrain unique but also on the Acropolis the Erechtheion sits directly across from the Doric Parthenon. The opposing styles appear to be intentional by the architect. “To compensate for the awkward character of the building as a whole, the architect took great care with the decorative details… The stone chosen was the dark-blue limestone of Eleusis to contrast with the white Pentelic marble of the walls and columns and the marble relief figures attached to the dark frieze” (Kleiner 118). In it’s irregular design what is most distinctive and uncommon are the caryatid columns. Although not the first appearance of caryatid columns, the sculptured caryatids of the Erechtheion are extremely detailed to the point where life is highly implied.
