What are you afraid of? Many people are afraid of many things such as death, heights, bugs, or public speaking; but the fear of change ranks high in the list of things that trigger anxiety (Radwan). Is there a reasonable answer why people neglect change nowadays? In fact, there is more than one answer to this question. Change has become such an important aspect of our everyday life that it is impossible to ignore. When it comes to the idea of change, most people will readily agree that some individuals try their hardest to avoid change. The reason behind this known theory is that those individuals don’t fear change; they fear being changed (Rabadam). In the end, change is something that drives them away from wanting to experience other things besides what that individual is comfortable with.
In order to examine this issue thoroughly, an individual must carefully analyze the meaning of change. Change signifies the act or instance of making or becoming different. Change is something that presses us out of our comfort zone (Webb). People fear change because of the “unknown.” What this means exactly is that people fear their own abilities to cope with whatever is coming up next. Fear of change and fear of the unknown are related because they both mean moving into unfamiliar territory. When people are comfortable with a certain situation, they tend to shy away from other situations. As a result, this creates distinctive psychological reasons why individuals begin to stay clear of change.

Assuming that the change is for the better, it is probably a true statement in most cases. As a person one might find that we follow a specific routine on the day to day basis. Sudden changes to these routines feels weird and out of place. In William Faulkner’s “A Rose For Emily” based in a fictional town called Jefferson taking place during the twentieth century. The time period is indeed an important factor because southern tradition was above all of the highest importance. This short story gives the audience details of life during that time in which they followed the values of southern tradition and the importance to never stray away from those traditions. Change is an inevitable process of life and often it can be extremely difficult to deal with. A change can be as small and insignificant as changing a habit, or maybe even as huge as switching schools or death. The Catcher in the Rye is a novel about the main character’s, Holden’s, journey of growing up. He experiences many varying types of changes. Holden is afraid of change and in many situations throughout the novel, he resists both change and the process of maturity. In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the motif of the Museum of Natural History is the main object that helps to develop the theme of Holden’s fear of change, and it is obvious that he fears change and complexity more and more as the story progresses, eventually resulting in him becoming irritated by even the slightest of changes.

Change is a word that I have constantly heard throughout my high school years. It is a transformation through which everyone goes whether it's for the better or for the worse. For me the meaning and value of change has helped me to focus on the goals I have to accomplish. For others, it is simply just a phase we go through. Everyone in this world have their own culture and ideas of how the world should be. They have things that have been in their customs for years or even thousands of years. These things are supposed to “keep us united.”(Bansal) But what happens when our own cultures and ideas get challenged by new things that represent change. People start to get chaotic and immediately start to reject something that they do not want to give it a try or does not seem right to them.
