According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, discrimination is described as “the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people.” Discrimination still exists in our world and society today. Some people believe differently and would argue this statement. However, I believe that if discrimination did not still exist, there would not be laws prohibiting it. Society as well as the people in it discriminates against race and gender, as well as religion. Society has a major impact on discrimination. Many ask why discrimination cannot be forgot about and the answer is society. Society has taught us to judge people on how they look and what they wear. But, maybe they have problems going on …show more content…
in life and that’s why they looked so stressed out, or maybe they are less fortunate and cannot afford to buy the stylish and up to date clothes. The problem is that discrimination still exists and most likely is here to stay. It starts in one’s mind because a person or group of people that they see do not believe in the same things or appeal to be the same as the person judging. What’s that old saying? Oh yeah, “never judge a book by its cover.” In today’s society, it seems as if teenagers catch the greatest portion of racial discrimination.
Racism can cause physical battles between people as well as a mental battle amongst the person being bullied. This type of metal battle can lower one’s self esteem and in its greatest form, cause suicide. Racial discrimination started many, many years ago when slavery was established. Caucasian farm owners would use the African Americans to work their farms for little to no reward in return. Racism is not just between Caucasians and African American’s. However, today this seems to be the predominate issue. It exists between any two or more different races. Looks, size, posture, and gender do not matter; it’s what’s on the inside that truly …show more content…
counts. In the olden days males were superior to females.
It was believed that the males should do the work to support the family while the female cooked, cleaned, and took proper care of things around the house. Women were often discriminated against in the work force. If a female applied for a job and so did a male, the male would acquire the job over the female. Today this is not as big of a deal as it was back then. In today’s society, people are more concerned with the sex of one’s partner and transgender. Considering the same sex marriage law has recently been passed in select states, there has been a major uproar. Some people believe that love is love and this is how God created them; others believe that God intended for man and woman to be together, not man and man or woman and woman. Some will strive to prove their point by using scriptures from the Bible. However, this does not matter to the ones who believe in it. Why is this big deal when premarital sex, dishonor of mothers and fathers, and affairs are ignored?
As well as being judged by color and gender, people are often judged for their religious views as well. Christians, Muslims, and Jewish people all have the same idea in regards to religion. They may not practice religion the same way; however, each denomination worships a higher authority. Some may wear head bands and a scarf, some may show little to no skin when in public, and some may have no restrictions as to what they wear. When one denomination looks at another,
they may look unusual or strange. All that truly matters is if they are living properly and setting the example that their denomination strives for. Many keep their rude thoughts to themselves because that’s how they were raised. However, there are still people in the world who like to judge or discriminate people; only to make themselves look like the bigger and better person. However, judging people in regards to their race, gender, or religion do not make you superior. Society should focus on the future instead of worrying about other people and their color, sex, and beliefs. A future cannot be established alone. Maybe the people that society is judging are the key to success.
In a society, the discrimination is wrong, we should try to end it now; besides, discriminations make people being have a distance when they stand near each other. We need develop this society lives by unity; furthermore, I believe only unity is a super power to improve our life without discrimination of races, sex, religions, because “united we stand, divided we fall.” Everybody has an equal right in life; we should refuse discrimination in society; if we know changes, then everything will become a miracle bring the happiness to everybody.
Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
Discrimination still exists in our world. People getting mistreated, bullied, abused, etc. because from where they are born is a serious matter that needs to be change. The characteristics and personality is what people are supposed to see in a person, not their appearance.
Overall discrimination is an awful thing. It is like a STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you don’t watch out. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. They allow for people to have control of them and walk all over them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
“…Everybody jumped on him, and beat him senseless… Everybody was hitting him or kicking him. One guy was kicking at his spine. Another guy was hitting him on the side of his face… he was unconscious. He was bleeding. Everybody had blood on their forearms. We ran back up the hill laughing… He should have died… He lost so much blood he turned white. He got what he deserved…” (Ridgeway 167). The skinheads who were beating this man up had no reason to do so except for the fact that he was Mexican. Racism in this day and age is still as big of a problem as it was in the past, and as long as hate groups are still around to promote violence, society is never going to grow to love one another.
There are three types of racism. The most visible type is personally mediated racism where say a black man is being beaten due to the color of his skin. The effects on his health are obvious to see, the physical aspect is apparent. When people over a period of time have been subjected to, racial prejudice and discrimination begin to doubt their own worth and abilities they become victims of internalized racism. Constant, numerous instances in their respective environments have all abst...
Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Thus we conclude superiority and inferiority associated with racial differences are often socially constructed to satisfy the socio-political agenda of the dominant group”(Heewon Chang,Timothy Dodd;2001;1).
Discrimination based on race, gender, class, and culture has been reoccurring since the beginning stages of mankind. Discrimination can derive from several different factors, whether sexual identity, race, gender, social-class as this paper demonstrated. The purpose of the paper was to discuss how discrimination was locked to institutional power between 1600s and 1990s, but even today discrimination is very prevalent and will continue to be, as the criminal justice system and the war on drugs acts as a form of discrimination towards people of color. Discrimination based on race, sexual ideologies and practices, and social class seem to still be very prevalent, while discrimination based on gender seems to have left the publics view.
“Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons” (Schaefer 35). Discrimination differs from prejudice as it refers to the behavior or action usually based on prejudice rather than just thoughts.
Due to racism individuals have faced “up-front violence, the physical assaults, the spitting, and the
Although it is now illegal to discriminate anyone based on one’s race or gender it is still a practice that many take part in, whether it is in the work place or prejudice that take place as part of who someone is. As the momentum started to pick up behind the equal rights movement of the mid-century an even a greater number of people began to be aware of the fact that there really is no difference between people and that all should be treated the same. As time has progressed so have the beliefs of people, things that were once a part of everyday life like children not being able to go to school together are a thing of the past. We now live in a time of acceptance and less judgment we now live in a nation where we are not judged by the color of skin, but the content of our character (Martin Luther King
Women were allowed to work, but their positions were to fill low paying jobs. Women were able to have a job, but their most important job was still to bear children to expand the population. Women also were in charge of the household duties. This included cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children's needs and other necessities of daily living. The functions of a man was to be the head of the household. They make all decisions about how money was spent, where the family lived, and all other important decisions for the family. Most families were very close together and they functioned together as one. What kept families so close together was mainly their religion. Religion is intended to provide emotional support and to answer questions about the unknown (Basirico et al. 2009). Whenever a situation occurred, most people turned to their religion to find solutions. Religion, according to the structure functionalism is an institution that performs its required duties to society (Basirico et al. 2009). Most families' norms and culture formed from their religion and because of this anything out of the norm, like homosexuality, is considered deviant and abnormal. With this in mind, societies have discriminated against homosexuals because the majority are heterosexuals who are religious. The majority has the power to decide what is considered right and wrong. Because of this, conflict arises and the majority resists change. The majority of society interprets the bible how homosexuality is wrong because it is not accepted by God, and it defeats the purpose of people reproducing and creating life. Homosexuals deal between the conflict of what their religion tells them and what is the reality. Social responses and interactions of individuals toward homosexuals, influenced how society sees and treats homosexuality today. Society has than been intolerant, ignorant, and
Racism is still a very prominent yet controversial topic in the United States today. Discrimination in the United States dates back to the 1500s when America was first founded. As generations passed, it has become a social norm to believe that darker skin tones are less desirable to society. The foundation of this country was built upon the false impression that Whites were superior to not just blacks, but all other ethnicities. From this, the idea of white privilege was derived and is still prevalent in society today. Those who are victims of discrimination are sometimes not aware of the psychological effect and the overall impact it can have on one’s life. The persistence of racism over generations has been in correlation to adversely affect the mental health of the victims economically, socially and in turn physically.
Prejudice refers to one’s biased opinions and ideas of others, based on secondary information. Hence, the internalized ideas concerning the prejudiced members in society does not result from personal experiences, but information from third parties. Where prejudice is prevalent, the social relationships between the concerned individuals become strained and unmanageable. The existence of equality in society discourages the frequency of prejudice on racial grounds. The content of this discussion explores the concept of prejudice, as it relates to racial inequality and discrimination. The discussion features the Emmanuel AME Church shooting scenario, which characterizes racial discrimination and inequality. The discussion further examines the role
The belief of discrimination is hard to come by. It is hard to think of how someone can have such strong hatred towards a human being but in the end there are some people that don’t hold back. The belief is that people discriminate due to a social cue, a cue in the sorts of looking cool or to fit in also known as conforming. Conforming can be a reason to make fun of someone by their skin color, sexuality, or even weight due to fitting in with the crowd under peer pressure. With this being said, discrimination is heard of all over the nation. The people who discriminate could quite possibly hear about it at home and think that it’s alright to say such hateful things not knowing the damage that it causes the people that receive discrimination everyday. Discrimination could also be a way of coping, by making fun of someone else but when the person is the one who really is insecure and worried about themselves. In an article written in “American Psychological Association” , the author lists reasons on why people think that discrimination is the answer because “Humans are naturally motivated to categorize people and objects. This is normal cognitive behavior. But discrimination goes beyond that...Some of the most damaging forms of discrimination are the result of deep-seated, destructive generalizations
