“Be of good cheer. Do not think of today’s failure, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere, and you will find joy in overcoming obstacles” by Hellen Keller. This quote means that you can always succeed in life by using the 16 Habits. An example of the Habits of Mind is used in the short story, Doctor De Soto by William Steig. This story contains two characters, Doctor De Soto and his wife, who are popular dentists that treat animals that are not dangerous to mice. One day Dr. De Soto made an exception for a fox that seemed to be in extreme pain. Once Doctor De Soto helped the fox, the fox decided to eat him and his wife. to glue the fox’s teeth together by using the three main habits, Persisting, Thinking Interdependently, and Thinking Flexibly. Doctor De Soto and Mrs.
De Soto are successful because they apply the Habit of Mind, persisting. Persisting means to remain focused on a task until it's completed or looking for ways to finish that task. An example of this is used in Doctor De Soto when one day, a well-dressed, injured fox stood in front of the De Sotos’ house and pleaded for their help. Seeing the poor fox, Doctor De Soto decides to treat him. Not long after the fox leaves, he rethinks his decision about helping him and thought of a final conclusion. The dentist says, “Once I start a job. I finish it. My father was the same way” (Steig, 19). This quote means that Doctor De Soto feels threatened about helping the fox, yet by taking after his belief, he should keep on finishing the job. The De Sotos use Persisting to finish the task that he …show more content…
started. The De Sotos uses the Habit of Mind, thinking interdependently to succeed. Thinking interdependently means to work together and learn from each other. This habit is applied when Doctor De Soto and Mrs. De Soto cooperate to make a plan to protect themselves. In the quote, “Doctor De Soto stepped into the fox’s mouth with a bucket of secret formula and proceeded to paint each tooth. Mrs. De Soto stood by on the ladder, pointing out the spots he had missed” (Steig, 25), This is an example of Thinking interdependently because the De Sotos uses teamwork to paint every tooth with the “secret formula”. Additionally, when they use the “secret formula”, they are referring to the glue used to stick the fox’s mouth together. In result, the fox wouldn’t be able to eat them. Doctor De Soto and Mrs. De Soto used Thinking Interdependently to glue the fox’s mouth shut to prevent the fox to eat from eating them. Thinking about your thinking is applied to Doctor De Soto and Mrs.
De Soto. Mrs. De Soto is aware of her thoughts and feelings about the fox and chooses to communicate them. This causes Doctor De Soto to consider about what Mrs. De Soto says. Mrs. De Soto wonders “Should we let him in tomorrow?” (Steig 19). At first, Dr. De Soto considers the option of letting the fox back into their house, but later on, he changes his decision. To take care of the issue of the fox wanting to eat them, Mrs. De Soto and Doctor De Soto created a plan. The plan was to use a tempting solution to solve the fox’s toothache forever, yet rather, glue his teeth shut so they wouldn’t get eaten. The De Sotos show the Habit of Mind, thinking about your thinking, by using their thoughts and ideas to consider options for preventing the fox from eating
them. Mrs. De Soto and Doctor De Soto are great examples of how people use the 16 Habits of Mind to become successful. Doctor De Soto uses the habit, Persisting when he decides to continue his job, although he has second thoughts about it. The De Sotos think interdependently when they work together to glue the fox’s teeth shut. Mrs. De Soto thinks about her thinking . when she considers the option of allowing the fox back into their house; from this decision Doctor De Soto considers the option, but his mind is set on finishing his job. By following the Habits of Mind, you can accomplish all your goals and can create a better, more successful life for yourself.

Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”
In the late 1500's after the disappointment of Coronado's non-glorious expedition was forgotten, Spain had a renewed interest in New Mexico. King Philip II needed a new conquistador to go to New Mexico to obtain and claim the 3 G's (Gold, Glory, and God) for the crown and for the country. The man chosen to fill this job was Juan de Onate. Being of noble Basque blood it seems that Juan de Onate was destined to become someone of importance. It is said that the Basque people were "Hardy, self-reliant, and stubbornly strong" and "In New Spain won distinction as explorers, soldiers, and discoverers of mines on the frontier." Juan's father Cristobal de Onate was one of those Basque people described above. In 1546 Cristobal along with a few other Basque men discovered a silver mine in Mexico, but was already rich due to his many encomiendas, his salary as a lieutenant-governor, and many other businesses he owned. Given Juan de Onate's tremendous wealth and outstanding family history King Philip thought that he had found an excellent conquistador, but would soon find out that he was wrong.
The painting entitled `Zapata con el caballo de Cortés` was painted in 1931, eleven years after the end of The Mexican Revolution, by the Mexican muralist – Diego Rivera. It represents the social economic and political revolution in Mexico led by peasants under the conduct of Emiliano Zapata against the authoritarian regime of the former president - Portfolio Diaz. In this analysis I will focus on the characters, the setting, the colours and the way they communicate in the painting.
The outnumbered Spanish conquistadors were able to so easily defeat the natives of South and Central America for many reasons. These reasons include the spread of disease, the fear the Spanish spread, civil war, and the thought that Cortez was a God. The Natives were not immune to the European disease such as smallpox, influenza measles, typhus, plague, malaria, and yellow fever. This wiped out 85-90% of the Native population in 50 years. This was the largest demographic catastrophe in human history. (Document 4: The American Holocaust)
He wanted to be famous, “At ten I wanted fame” (Soto line 1) and to achieve his dreams he became rebellious, this was the only way he had to get the attention he wanted from those around him. Soto portrayed the child’s personality as a reflection of his own, he knew that he could act in similar ways to the character and had no consequences or being discipline it for it; at the end Soto’s parents were acceptable oh his behavior, as long he stayed out of prison. The fact that acting in a good way was not going to lead to receive any attention, acting rebellious is the only way the child has to be noticed. Evidently, there is a lack of respect displayed54t by the child in the poem; he images himself cursing to an imaginary priest, “I said ‘shit.’ ‘Fuck you,’ and “No way Daddy-o” (Soto lines
One thing both these characters shared was the involvement of one parent in the family significantly more than the other. In “Looking For Work”, Soto’s life seems to be revolving around his mother as she was much more present in the family than the father both physically and emotionally. At the very beginning of the narrative, Soto wants his brother Rick and sister to wear shoes at the dinner table but instead, Rick decides to wear swim trunks and Soto states “My mother didn’t notice” (Soto 22). This paraphrase immediately shows, despite both parents being present, there is a greater relationship between Soto and his mother which tends to happen with the absence of a father in a child 's life whether physically or emotionally. Correspondingly, Talent seems to have a closer relation with her father rather than mother and clearly feels the absence of her mother 's regards. When she states “My mother who didn 't like to touch me..” (Tallent 159), you can truly feel the rigid relationship between her and her mother as she uncovers her emotions of suffering a severe and damaging lack of the affection from her mother that every child needs. Soto would have been able to better relate what life was like outside the TV
De Soto was born somewhere around the year 1500 in Jerez de los Caballeros in Extremadura in what is now Spain (Milanich & Hudson 26). Contemporaries of de Soto would include Cortez, Balboa, and Francisco Pizzaro with whom he would share a great adventure. De Soto's ancestors had been part of the reconquista and as aristocrats many had been knighted for their part in driving the Moors from the Iberian Peninsula (Milanich & Hudson 26). Hernando would have played no part in the expulsion of the Moors; however, family legacy would have played no small part in developing his frame of reference. It is thought that by the time do Soto was fourteen he was on his way to the new world.
In America, our society is defined as a “melting pot”. A “melting pot” refers to the blend or melting of cultures, or a combination of several of cultures in a society. Explorers to the “New World” such as Cabeza de Vaca and William Bradford are significantly important in history and in literature. Both explorers traveled to the “New World” for different reasons. Cabeza de Vaca went on an exploration to gain more wealth, gold, learn about the land, and culture. On the other hand, Bradford moved to the Americas for religious freedom, and away from English rule. Cabeza de Vaca and Bradford both were important, remember able explorers to the New World, and both their stories tell their experience, especially their encounters with different communities. Cabeza de Vaca 's piece Castaways is a conversion and inversion narrative about this experiences especially with the Native Americans, while William Bradford 's Of Plymouth Planation is classified as providential narrative, which focuses on the God 's future plans than the interaction with different communities.
For most of the people in the Spanish-speaking world, religion is a large part of daily life, and a large percentage of those people are Catholics. According to America Magazine, in 2010, the largest population of Catholics in the world resided in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mexico has the second-largest Catholic population of any country in the world, with 85 percent of its residents identifying themselves as practicing Catholicism (Catholic). One of the main beliefs of the Catholic faith is the sanctity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ.
It eventually made him only want to marry a woman who was just like him, a woman who was poor. Everyone in Soto’s life wanted him to marry a Mexican girl not only because they would both be poor, but because all of his close family members married Mexicans also. Even his best friend Scott wanted him to marry a Mexican girl,
1492 was the year that Christopher Columbus, the Spanish conquistador, came to the “New World” and explored it which to be later colonized by Spain, France, and mostly England to establish the soon to be, colonial America. In time, when colonists arrived in the New England region ruled by Britain their lives were being controlled by many factors consisting of religion, wealth, social status, race, conflicts with other colonists/Indians and gender. In the book, Everyday Life in Early America, written by David Freeman Hawke, it is argued that these immigrants were colonists that were forced to adapt to a new way of life. The author, Hawke, believed these colonists living in the New England region or the Chesapeake region could not really survive in this “New World” with what they learned about their culture in Europe such as customs and traditions back from Europe but had to get used to the new territory and new society or face the hardships that the “New World” had to offer. Overall, the book shows who came and how they settled, farming and housing, health and manners, and morals and witchcraft, and even difference in race and conflicts with Indians.
General Motors is one of the world's most dominant automakers from 1931. After 1980s economic recession the main goal for automobile companies was cost reduction. Customers became more price-sensitive. Also Japanese competitors came into market with the new effective system of production. So market was highly competitive and directed toward price reduction. The case states that in 1991 GM suffered $ 4.5 billion losses and most part of the costs of manufacturing was due to purchased components. GM NA hired Lopez in order to find the way from "extraordinary" situation and reduce costs.
Oprah Winfrey said, “My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” The Consolations of Philosophy, written by author Alain de Botton, is a perfect example showing six philosophers who had philosophies that were relatable and applicable to bettering everyday life. Socrates, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Seneca, Epicurus, and Montaigne each have a chapter based after them, where de Botton discusses their philosophies. What these great men were doing and saying wasn’t always seen as right, and they were often viewed as crazy, but their goal was to show people how to make life easy to get through while putting them in the best place for future success. de Botton does an excellent job of picking the right philosophies to break down and simplify, as Socrates, Schopenhauer, and ______, are three of the philosophers who demonstrate the most relatable, and helpful philosophies for everyday life.
