Eric is the epitome of bravery, the very home which it lives. Though cold heartedly evil he displays more bravery than any other character in the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. Eric displays his courage in many different ways. Eric puts his life in danger every day by lying to the faction he leads, communicating with his leader, and through the acts he commits every day. Throughout the book you see Eric’s cunning and bravery displayed over and over again. He talks very tactfully and hides his true intentions well. You can see that Eric is through and through, Erudite. Even though he belongs to a different faction, he is a leader of Dauntless. It can be assumed that Four’s and Eric’s trainers were just as hard as Eric and Four themselves. The trainers must have been clever, clever enough to see that Eric was not what he said he was. Eric was a spy, the first pawn played in Jeanine’s elaborate scheme to take over all five factions. He never faltered once and continued on, knowing that if he was caught, his punishment would be far worse than death. Every day Eric lied to the faces of the Dauntless leaders even though he knew the consequences. He did it to save his true faction, Erudite.
Eric was of the belief that Abnegation was corrupt, evil and abusing the powers that had been given to them. Thinking this he fought for what he thought was right. If Eric was ever found out as a spy he would be killed on the spot. Even knowing this he kept going. He put his life on the line throughout the entire book to save the family and friends he believed had been taken advantage of. He had told so many lies that he now held them to be true. His people were being exploited and their life was endangered. On pages 276 and 277 Eric is brave enoug...

...as. Their lives were endangered and the now corrupt Abnegation was the cause of it. Eric grew up in this world and he made himself into the hero to save it. All of Eric’s actions were made to save his family, friends, and faction. His actions were callous and heartless because he thinks with his brain, not his heart. He does the most logical solution to every problem and follows it through, no matter how malicious.
Eric is a very misunderstood character but, he is the knight of bravery, albeit the Dark Knight of Bravery. He is cold hearted but he does it in an attempt to save his people. He is constantly endangering himself to save the Erudite. He risks his own life to release Erudite from the oppression of the Abnegation. His evil acts are his acts of courage, though could hearted. Without these evil acts of bravery the world around us would have long ago changed.
Eric never really had any friends. He lived most of his life as a lonely loner up until he met Sarah. He and Sarah had each othe...
The book begins with an in-depth explanation of what happened in the latter stages of the Civil War. Major battles like Sayler’s Creek, High Bridge and Richmond are described through detailed language. For instance, at High Bridge, “Each man wages his own individual battle with a ferocity only a life-and-death situation can bring. Bullets pierce eyes. Screams and curses fill the air. The grassy plain runs blood red.” (page 61). All of these iconic Civil War battles led up to the Confederate surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse and the inescapable rebuilding of a new nation Abraham Lincoln had to deal with. Next, John Wilkes Booth is introduced and his pro-Confederate motives are made clear. His conspiracy to kill the president is described and his co-conspirators like Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt who also attempted to kill Secretary of State Seward a...
According to Winston Churchill “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” The character Eric Calhoun did exactly that, and more. In the book “Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes” by Chris Crutcher, many characters display courage, but the one who stands out as the most courageous is Eric Calhoun. Eric shows lots of courage throughout the book helping Sarah and being loyal to his friends. Eric is courageous by staying fat for Sarah so they stay friends, taking Sarah’s problems into his own hands, and staying true to Sarah despite the consequences.
Eric believes that living an openly homosexual life in Paris is more satisfying, rewarding, comfortable and protected because his choice of life is widely accepted by the French society. In Paris, everyone feels comfortable. Everyone feels free to live his or her own life and not adhere to the rules that society establishes. Homosexuals have the liberty to walk down the street, sit in public parks and show affection towards their partner free of worry, without the fear of "alley cats". The people of Paris condone and support Eric's happiness, as seen in this passage: "I see that. You seem much happier. There's a kind of light around you. She said this very directly, with a rueful, conspiratorial smile: as though she knew the cause of his happiness, and rejoiced for him" (234).
After Beowulf serves as King of the Geats for fifty years, he goes to battle one last time to fight a horrible Dragon that is terrifying his people. While others cower, Beowulf shows signs of bravery that define him as a hero. An example of Beowulf showing bravery is when he goes to slay the Dragon even though all his men abandon him. He realizes that the Dragon is more powerful than he is, but he will still not back down.
...ance rather than the more legitimate end of civil justice for his father, thus causing the series of events ending in the royal family’s death. Hamlet admires Horatio for the qualities that he t himself does not possess, virtue and self-control, and even gives him praise: "Horatio, thou art e'en as just a man/As e'er my conversation cop'd withal" (III.ii.56-7). Horatio's strength of character is abiding and Hamlet yearns for the tranquility that must bring Horatio such stoicism. Hamlet’s ambiguity could not have been illuminated without the console Horatio so graciously offered him. It is often difficult to predict whether Hamlet will do as he says, or simply procrastinate further. In the performance, Horatio gave the audience insight into Hamlet and the development of his character, the essence of companionship, and most importantly, the quality of virtue.

He would not have been the warrior he was without the three villains that attacked him and threatened other people’s lives. The Geatland King learned how to think morally, realistically and how to control his thoughtless and selfish urges. The id, ego and superego turned him from an egotistical young boy into a noble and respected man. While he is the id himself, Beowulf realizes his surroundings and fulfills his own potential to self-actualize himself. The man becomes perspicacious and selfless towards life and his people. The legend will live on as Beowulf, the boy who grew into a man by facing his
...erson they want to be perceived as. This does not always mean that they present a fake side of them. Sometimes people might present their true selves to others. However in this movie, Eric used sign vehicles to manipulate and show a modified version of who he really was. On the front stage, he was a man with money, a good job, and amazing car. On the back stage, he had just lost his job. In the end of the movie, Eric finally admitted to everyone of his true identity. He no longer had to show a false self on the front stage, and could now act like his true self. In society, people tend to always use the key concepts of dramaturgy in their daily lives. During the everyday interactions, humans use various costumes to fit in with other. The movie Grown Ups, showed this concept in the character Eric, who wanted to be accepted and known as the rich guy among his friends.
“Should I take this secret to the grave? Should I tell Amelia about this? No… No… Should I confess what I did and apologize to Eric and let him know about his mutation? It could make a happy guy miserable for the rest of his life! I know Eric and Amelia are in a serious relationship. What if they get married and soon after Eric is diagnosed with lung cancer while Amelia finds out she is pregnant with their first baby? By the way, how can I help him quit smoking? Oh, I regret that I could not resist my hand reaching for his phone… What should I do now?”
Have you ever stayed perfect your whole life? Of course not! Tris’s mother says “Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again”. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, in the fact that it is human nature to do wrong things evil misdeeds. This is shown in the book Divergent when the Erudite murder Abnegation members for their own greed and power. Through biblical times as well as in modern day politics we still see people, with good intentions from the start, slowly poisoned by their own voracious greed, and desire for power and wealth.
Beowulf displayed great courage and honor throughout his journeys and battles; he was an epic hero. An epic hero is a person who is viewed as larger than life and possesses values of a certain society. From the time of Beowulf’s battle with Grendel to his brawl against the dragon, he has showed everyone what being an honorable hero looks like. His heroism is revealed through both youth as a young warrior and wisdom as a reliable king. He never backed down and didn’t give up when situations were tough. Beowulf had obligations to fulfill and went about every aspect of his life with courage and strength. He cared for his people and was willing to take on anyone that threatened them or his kingdom. He sincerely was the hero of his time.
Courage is one of the most important traits of a hero. “The root of the word courage is from the Latin word for heart.” (Garcia 1) Courage defines a hero’s ability to face pain, difficulty and mostly danger. (Dictionary) Beowulf does not only fight Grendel, but also fighting Grendel’s mother and decapitating her. (Garcia) The meaning of fighting without armor, facing challenge and placing his life in danger gives Beowulf the honor to be called courageous. It is extremely difficult to put his life in danger but he does is anyways even if he’s risking his life for his people. Beowulf also shows courage when he faces his biggest challenge, the Dragon. “I would rather not use a weapon if I knew another way to grapple with the dragon…as I did against Grendel in days gone by.” (2518-21) Beowulf shows the same courage even though he is older and weaker. He is not scared of the dragon whatsoever. Being courageous gives him confidence and with confidence he manages to defeat but giving his life up as well. “The serpent on the ground…lying facing him. The fire-Dragon was scaresomely burnt, scorched all colours.” (3039-42) After all the suffering, Beowulf manages to defeat the Dragon, taking him to an end. Beowulf shows courage at all costs. He gave his life for the benefit of his
The two of them met while he was stationed in England during the war. The couple stayed together until shortly before Eric was born. Then, Edward returned to Canada to be with his real family including his wife that he left behind. This made it extremely hard for Patricia to care for Eric considering that she was a teenage mom. Her parents stepped up and raised Eric as if he was their own child. A musical family raised Eric. His grandmother had a deep love for playing the piano. Patricia claims that his dad was a gifted musician and played the piano very well. The people around him instilled the love of music in Eric throughout his childhood years. For one of his birthdays, he asked for a guitar. His love for guitar playing caused him to give up on a formal education (college). He loved Rock and Blues music, and that was his focus when he started playing music. Throughout his music career, Eric joined a band called the Yardbirds. He began to record his first albums and shortly after, he discovered that, his music love really lied with the Blues. Eric gave up the title of being an expert guitar player. However, he will play a few pieces when given the
Throughout the novel, the killers are expected to be unpopular goths; however, this stereotype is rather false. Eric is popular and even likable. “Eric was brain, but an uncommon subcategory: cool brain” (6). This pinpoints that Eric was in the “inner circle.” Unlike how most of the students predicted, Eric has plenty of friends to lean on, and he is not the outcast that they
