Amelia and Jane were friends since they went to the same kindergarten in Rockville, Maryland. They lived close to each other and actually went to the same elementary, middle, and high schools together. Sadly, they happened to go different colleges but their colleges were both in the town where they lived, so they still get together and catch up on things on weekends. They share everything about their lives, and there is no secret between them. Not surprisingly, both Amelia and Jane started dating with guys in the fall semesters of their senior years. Jane majors in cell biology and genetics, and last year she went to the National Institutes of Health for a summer internship. She met Brad there and they started dating. Brad and his friend Eric both work at the NIH as post-doctoral researchers. Brad introduced his best friend, Eric, to Jane’s friend, Amelia. That was how two couples started double dating!

On a beautiful fall morning, the two couples planned to hang out together and have a relaxed weekend lunch in the Town Square of Rockville. Jane and Brad arrived early and chose to sit outside in the patio of Vino, their favorite Italian restaurant. As Jane and Brad took a seat and felt the fresh, cool autumn morning, Amelia and Eric entered the restaurant with smiling faces.

“Hi, there! How are you guys this morning?” said Eric.
“Just trying to enjoy the weather. How are you?” said Brad.
“Good. As usual,” Eric answered with his signature big smile.
“How’s your writing going, Amelia? I know you have been struggling with your dissertation paper. Poor Dear,” said Jane.
“You know me, Jane. I have been putting this off for a month and am finally getting into it! I guess I do not want to talk about my papers, at least during the week...

...is mutation had been discovered to have a strong association with lung cancer. What should Jane do with this secret? A lot of thoughts came across her mind.

“Should I take this secret to the grave? Should I tell Amelia about this? No… No… Should I confess what I did and apologize to Eric and let him know about his mutation? It could make a happy guy miserable for the rest of his life! I know Eric and Amelia are in a serious relationship. What if they get married and soon after Eric is diagnosed with lung cancer while Amelia finds out she is pregnant with their first baby? By the way, how can I help him quit smoking? Oh, I regret that I could not resist my hand reaching for his phone… What should I do now?”
