The novel The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, is a story that takes place in South Africa, and is narrated by a young English boy by the name of Peekay. The story follows his life, including both negative and positive events that shape who he is. Through his negative experiences with inequality and prejudice against others, Peekay develops his moral code that everyone should be treated equally. As a small child, Peekay had dealt with inequality first-hand, which gave him the drive to make sure no one else feels the disrespect and pain he had felt. At boarding school, The Judge wanted to “march every rooinek bastard into the sea” (24). Before Peekay was old enough to go to school, he started having a close relationship with his nanny. His nanny, that he knew his whole life, was black and he often described her as his “lovely black nanny” with a “...white smile” (3). As he learned later on in life, Black people were seen as an inferior group of people, yet he disagreed because he knew a black women that raised him and knew the beauty within her is most likely the same in others, proving his push for equality. Not only did he find beauty in different races as a toddler, but a few years later he did as well. When Hoppie took Peekay to trade in his tackies (shoes) for new ones, Peekay was amazed at the “beautiful dark lady” at the counter, whereas Hoppie believed that the lady, as well as her family, “‘will cheat you anytime he [they] can’” (77&80). Hoppie allowed his racism to hold him back from viewing these people as equivalent to a white man, but Peekay was in awe at their beauty and cultural differences from what he’d seen before. This further presents Peekay’s ability to see beauty in races other than his own, allowing him to treat everyone the same. When various men at the jail refused to be in a picture with Geel Piet, a black man, he understood that “racism is a primary force of evil” (265). He hated the fact that a close friend and boxing coach of his was discriminated against by people he thought were good men. After Peekay’s school for black people got shut down, Peekay knew that not only was racism evil, but “It’s a disease, a sickness” (456). He tried to create something positive for the black African community, only for it to be shut down by racist policemen. He followed the rules with his school and didn’t break the curfew, yet the police still tried to get rid of the school because of their racist instinct. The unfair acts against his close friend and innocent Africans caused Peekay to remind people of the good in them. After Geel Piet’s death, he created a song dedicated to him, as an attempt to bring light to such a wonderful spirit rather than allow the negative claims about his race define
Lynching of black men was common place in the south as Billie Holiday sang her song “Strange Fruit” and the eyes of justice looked the other way. On the other side of the coin, justice was brought swiftly to those blacks who stepped out of line and brought harm to the white race. Take for instance Nate Turner, the slave who led a rebellion against whites. Even the Teel’s brought their own form of justice to Henry Marrow because he “said something” to one of their white wives (1). Flashing forward a few years later past the days of Jim Crow and the fight for civil rights, several, but not all in the younger generation see the members of the black and white race as equal and find it hard to fathom that only a few years ago the atmosphere surrounding racial relations was anything but pleasant.
America have a long history of black’s relationship with their fellow white citizens, there’s two authors that dedicated their whole life, fighting for equality for blacks in America. – Audre Lorde and Brent Staples. They both devoted their professional careers outlying their opinions, on how to reduce the hatred towards blacks and other colored. From their contributions they left a huge impression on many academic studies and Americans about the lack of awareness, on race issues that are towards African-American. There’s been countless, of critical evidence that these two prolific writers will always be synonymous to writing great academic papers, after reading and learning about their life experience, from their memoirs.
The old Negro was known as more of a myth than a man, because of the vindictive formula’s of who Negroes were allowed to be way back when. When it came to African Americans, there was always debate as to how they should be treated, because of the color of their skin. In addition to being condemned and silenced as if they had no voice. In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, Wright’s defining aspect is his hunger for equality between whites and blacks in the Jim Crow South. Wright recounts his life from a young boy in the repugnant south to an adult in the north. In the book, Wright’s interpretation of hunger goes beyond the literal denotation. Thus, Wright possesses an insatiable hunger for knowledge, acceptance, and understanding. Wright’s encounters with racial discrimination exhibit the depths of misunderstanding fostered by an imbalance of power.
Ethnic group is a settled mannerism for many people during their lives. Both Zora Neale Hurston, author of “How It Feels to Be Colored Me; and Brent Staples, author of “Just Walk On By: A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space,” realize that their life will be influenced when they are black; however, they take it in pace and don’t reside on it. They grew up in different places which make their form differently; however, in the end, It does not matter to them as they both find ways to match the different sexes and still have productivity in their lives.. Janie’s first discovery about herself comes when she is a child. She is around the age of six when she realizes that she is colored. Janie’s confusion about her race is based on the reasoning that all her peers and the kids she grows up with are white. Janie and her Nanny live in the backyard of the white people that her Nanny works for. When Janie does not recognize herself on the picture that is taken by a photographer, the others find it funny and laughs, leaving Janie feeling humiliated. This racial discovery is not “social prejudice or personal meanness but affection” (Cooke 140). Janie is often teased at school because she lives with the white people and dresses better than the other colored kids. Even though the kids that tease her were all colored, this begins Janie’s experience to racial discrimination.
Scout learns that by yielding to prejudice, we often hurt and cause strife unto others. For example, Scout is harassed and becomes the target of insults when her father decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. This is a plajurized essay. The hate felt towards black people by the majority of the Maycomb citizens causes them to bother and harass those who attempt to befriend the black people. Forgive me for stealing this essay. Scout watches as the jury deliberates and convicts Tom Robinson of murder because he is a black man. This is a stolen essay. Although Scout witnesses a myriad of injustices occurring against black people, she also sees an exiguity of kind and compassionate movements towards black people.
Prejudice is a cancer that spreads hate among its perpetrators and victims alike. In 1930 Langston Hughes penned the novel, Not Without Laughter. This powerful story, written from the perspective of an African-American boy named James “Sandy” Rodgers, begins in the early 1900’s in the small town of Stanton, Kansas. Through the eyes of young Sandy, we see the devastating impact of racism on his family and those they are close to. We also see how the generations of abuse by whites caused a divide within the black community. Among, and even within, black families there were several social classes that seemed to hinge on seeking equality through gaining the approval of whites. The class someone belonged to was determined by the color of their skin, the type of church one attended, their level of education, and where an individual was able to find work.

During the winter of 1928, in Montgomery, Alabama, a black girl who was only fifteen-year-old got on a city bus so she could go visit her sick grandmother. She was supposed to go to the “colored only” section, there were no seats so she went to seat up front, but just as the girl sat down, a white man boarded the bus and the bus driver yelled “I said move”. “This bus ain’t goin’ anywhere until you get on back there with your kind”.
I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life. From the displays of power that have been shown through out this essay, we see that this story is a story about power. Griffin feels it is necessary to understand the hardship of blacks in the United States of America. Through medications, bleaching and ultraviolet light, Griffin is able to temporarily change his skin color so that he can walk through the streets and understand the injustices faced by African Americans.
